USA and USSR had turned

from friends to enemies!

Page 6: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

What was Cold War? The Cold War is the name given to the

relationship that developed primarily between the USA and the USSR after World War Two.

So COLD!

After being Allies during WWII, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. soon viewed each other with increasing suspicion

Their political differences created a climate of icy tension that plunged the two countries into an era of bitter rivalry between 1945 – 1989 known as the Cold War

The rivalry between the two superpowers led to and many indirect wars

Page 7: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

We don’t like the look of this. This is proof to us that Stalin wants to spread Communism. What can we do to make sure that the rest of

Europe doesn’t become Communist?

USSR - Stalin

You wanted to destroy us before the war and you’ll want to destroy us

after the war. I don’t like you lot!!!

USA -Truman UK - Attlee

What is containment??

Page 14: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

USA - Truman

This is very important to me. Instead of continuing USA isolation policy after

WW1, I need to make sure that we help other countries

from falling into the hands of that crazy Stalin guy

with the handlebar moustache!

In other words, USA needs a Containment

policy to stop spreading of Communism.

Page 15: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

The Truman doctrine

Truman felt that it was the duty of USA to protect the West from the USSR. He announced that the

USA would give aid in the form of money and weapons to the poor countries of Europe.

I’ll stop the

Communists!

In other words, US

containment policy was known as

Truman Doctrine.

Page 17: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

The domino theory speculated that if one country comes under the influence of Communists, then

more would follow in a domino effect.

What do the

cartoons tell you

about USA & USSR fears?

Page 18: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

General Marshall

The Marshall Plan was designed to help the war torn countries of Europe to recover from the years of WW2.

The USA believed that the poorer a country was, the more likely that it would turn to Communism.

The USA set up a massive fund for the countries in Europe in which all of them could apply. However, Stalin became suspicious of this plan and made sure that those countries within his control did not apply.

Page 19: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

The use of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan were usually seen as the start

of the Cold War.

Mutual suspicion and distrust resulted with the USSR and the USA becoming rivals. However the Berlin Blockade would

strengthen this rivalry.

relationship that developed between USA and the USSR after World War

Two. So COLD!

Let’s look what happened between USA & USSR right

after WWII.

Page 25: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

When it was clear that Germany was losing the European war, the Allied leaders met at Yalta to plan what would happen to Europe after Germany’s defeat.

Page 26: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

They agreed on some important issues.

• Once Germany was defeated, Stalin would enter the war against Japan.

• Germany and Berlin were to be divided into four zones: American, French, British and Soviet.

Page 27: Unit 3 chap 1 start of cold war

War criminals who were responsible for the concentration camps would be hunted down.

Countries liberated from the occupation of the German army would be allowed to hold free elections to choose the government they wanted.

They would join the new United Nations organisations. Their aim was to keep peace after the war.

Eastern Europe would be seen as ‘a soviet sphere of influence.’
