PRODUCTION
CHOSEN ARTIST (GENERATIONALS)
Generationals are an American New Wave
duo formed in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Members:
• Ted Joyner- vocals, guitars
• Grant Widmer- vocals, guitars
Joyner and Widmer, formed a new band
called the Generationals, so named
because as they often watched CNN's
coverage of the 2008 presidential election
as they recorded, the pair noticed that
nearly every issue was dubbed a
generational issue.
Performance- This is when someone is performing in the
video, for example they could be either lip syncing, dancing or
playing a instrument in a live performance etc.
E.g. Foals- My Number (live performance)
Narrative-This is when the video follows a story that is
developed throughout the duration of the song it also has to
link with the lyrics of the song.
E.g. The Avalanches- ‘Since I Left You’
Conceptual- This is when the video has no relation with the
song, it can be something completely obscure and random.
E.g. Generationals- Ten-Twenty -Ten

FURTHER MUSIC VIDEO RESEARCH
The video starts with a long
shot of the miners in a mine-
this shot is black and white
which paints a dull image to
the audience.
As the 2 characters hear the
music and advance closer to
the location a series of close
ups allow the audience to
see the actors emotions.
When they locate the music
the black and white fades
into colour and the location
changes into a dance hall
with two girls practising.
The music video changes from the
genre of narrative into
performance as one of the miners
joins in with the girls dance
routine. A variety of long, medium
and close up shots help to show
the audience the emotion of the
character in the scene.
As the music begins to fade out around
the 4:25 minute mark the other minor
looks at his had and is transported back
into the original black and white shot
while still present amongst colour, this
signifies that something is up to the
audience.
At the end of the video we are
transported forward into present time
where the shots are located in the
surviving miners house.
A change back to narrative is in place
as the video changes from
performance back to the narrative
story following the two miners. The
character describes the loss of his
friend as the video ends.

I chose Oscar to perform both characters to create a strange feeling to the music video with an almost psychedelic twist as I think it will fit with the song’s style. He is an experienced actor and will understand the task he is faced with, this will make filming easier and hopefully make the music video the most effective.
CAST AND CREW
Adobe Premier Pro CS5.5
- To edit and put together the cl ips for my music video I wi l l use Adobe
Premier Pro as I am famil iar with the sof tware and it of fers a variety of
ef fects to be used.
Cannon 600D
- To shoot the shots that I require for my music video I wi l l use a Cannon
600D as I am used to the sett ings on the camera and they are readi ly
avai lable from the school .
Tripod
- This wi l l help to keep cer tain cl ips at a better qual ity as i t of fers camera
stabi l i ty which wil l fur ther benefits my music video.
SD card
- There wil l be a lot of important footage that wi l l be needed in order to edit
the music video.
EQUIPMENT NEEDED
Neacroft: Near to where I l ive with extensive back roads that are hardly used by road users- making filming the video easier. It is also a public area so no permission would be needed to film in this location.
Burton green: Another public area which means it reduces the legal problems for the music video. It will help to diverse the locations in the video.

I need to make sure that I have taken care of the fol lowing things before
fi lming and edit ing my music video in order to avoid legal issues. Before I
even star t fi lming the cl ips for my music video I wi l l need to contact the
people who own the rights to the song ( Generationals or record label) . Af ter I
have done this I need to make sure anyone who features in the music video
(actors) have given me permission to be a par t of the project. This is the
same with any land owners that own the lands we are shooting on because I
wil l need to have there permission before accessing the locations. I wi l l also
make sure that no logos are dominant in the video to avoid fur ther legal
issues.
CLEARANCES/COPYRIGHT
To prevent injury of the actors in my music video we wil l need to make sure that we have practised key scenes prior to f i lming. This wil l help to el iminate any mistakes and wil l highlight dangerous objects that need to be removed, for example any tr ipping hazards on a path.
When the actor is l ip synching it wi l l be important that the actor knows where he is going as his sight wil l be fixed on the camera. Therefore I wil l need to make sure the path he wil l be travell ing along wil l be hazard free (by removing objects, making sure it ’s smooth and sl ip free) .
Scenes that are shot on the road wil l extra awareness of road users such as drivers and cyclists. We wil l need to find a quiet road and make sure that they are clear before shooting the cl ips.
To prevent injury to the camera operator they should be aware of the sett ing in which they are fi lming and make sure that there are no dangerous things such as tr ipping hazards etc. This wil l help to prevent damage to both the camera man and any equipment used for f i lming.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Ensure that there is nothing to cause offence to any member of the audience.
There will be no unsuitable activities (drinking/smoking etc) featured in the video to prevent promoting them to the audience.
Make sure that the music video is appropriate to suitable age groups.
If young people are featured in the music video they shouldn’t participated in il legal or unethical activities such as under aged sex or drug taking.
There will be no swearing featured in the video as it can be seen as offensive.
If the actor(s) is below the age of 18 years old a permission slip may need to be fil led out to gain parental consent.
LEGAL AND ETHICAL
Removal of l itter- all l itter on the scene will be removed by the
production team as they are responsible to leave the location
as it was initially found.
High-visibility clothing- Crew members and production
personnel working on the highway must wear high-visibility
clothing to standard EN471.
Noise/Nuisance- Local authorities have the right to take
action under the Environment Protection Act (1990) as a
result of any unreasonable noise.
Props- Any props used during the shoot will be removed and
the area made good.
Health and safety -Full consideration of Health & Safety issues
for all employees must be taken and proven by the producer.
