The Election of 1800
• Rematch of the Election of 1796– President John Adams who won the election of 1796
(Federalists)– Vice President Thomas Jefferson who lost
(Democratic-Republicans) • Arguments from both sides that the other side
was endangering the country• End results
– Jefferson 73 votes– Adams 65 votes– Aaron Burr (Jefferson’s running mate) 73 votes– Tie…goes to the Constitution for tie break procedure
Breaking the Tie
• Constitution states the HoR gets to choose President in the case of a tie.
• Although Democratic-Republicans won the new HoR seats, the Federalists still held them for a few months.– Many Federalist did not like Jefferson– Many realized Burr was not well qualified
• 36 ballots and 3 weeks later, finally the Federalists elected the more qualified Jefferson– Burr would never forgive Jefferson for negative
statements he made about him
