Activity 6Observe and read aloud the words about feeling below. Then find the meaning.

happy nervous surprised confusedsad proud scared lonelyrelaxed bored angry disappointedamused excited ecstatic jealous

How do you feel when you get first rank in your class? Are you just relaxed or so amused?

B. MODELING OF TEXTActivity 7Your teacher will read you aloud the text below. Listen carefully and pay attention to the pronunciation to train you better. After that, answer his/her questions orally.

Well, the text above is called a descriptive text. It has a social function, namely: to describe a particular person, thing, or place. The above text describes particular person. The first paragraph is the identification part where it identifies an entity or a phenomenon (in this case is Robert Kedindang) and the rest paragraphs are the description parts where they describe parts, qualities, or characteristics of what or who is described.

C. JOINT CONSTRUCTION OF TEXTActivity 8

Make a group of five students. Each student in the group memorizes one paragraph of the text above. Not more than three minutes remember the key words of every sentence. Accordingly tell your other friends your sentences. The key words will help you to remember the sentences.

Activity 9

Complete the following sentences using your own words. Don’t write down your answers. Just answer in complete utterances. You can make use of the vocabulary you have learned above. The words in brackets guide you.

Our president is a gentleman. He/she is ...(looks). He/she is ... (age). His/her complexion is ...(complexion). He/she is...(build/figure). He/she is... (height). He/she is ..., ..., and ... (some personality traits). He feels ... (feeling) when ... (situation).

2

Let me tell you a friend of mine that I really want him to be my boy friend. His name is Robert Kedindang. I think he is the most perfect boy I have ever known. He has tall, straight and muscular body. His skin is fair. He is younger than his age. He is now 17 but like 14 year-old boy. Robert is so cool and cute. Don’t you want to know his traits? He is very independent and can be reliable well. Then, ehmm...he is so tidy, friendly and so creative. He is so exclusive. If only he were a film star, I guess he suits to be a hero in every movie. One thing I don’t like about him is that when he is angry, he just says no words. Yap! The other thing I always remember is that he is so scared of roach. He always runs away when he sees a roach. He thinks roach is very disgusting.

DESCRIBING PLACESA. BUILDING KNOWLEDGE OF FIELDSimple Present TensePlease remember that we use simple present tense when:

the action is general the action happens all the time, or habitually, in the past, present and future the action is not only happening now the statement is always true

There is some addition about the use of simple present tense. Pay attention to this.

Simple Present Tense - Fact, Habit, Opinion or Schedule?

Simple Present Tense is used:

1. to give your opinion - I like ice cream. I don't like spicy food.

2. to talk about schedules - The library opens at eight am. It doesn't open at 7.

3. to talk about daily habits - Sara eats a donut for breakfast every day. She doesn't eat cereal.

Subject-Verb Agreement (Concord)The subject and verb in a sentence must agree in number: both must be singular, or both must be plural. Problems occur in the present tense because one must add an -s or -es at the end of the verb when the subjects or the entity performing the action is a singular third person: he, she, it, or words for which these pronouns could substitute. Notice the difference between singular and plural forms in the following examples:

Singular PluralThe student sings. (He or she sings) The students sing. (They sing)

The bird does migrate. (It does) Those birds do migrate. (They do)

WORDS THAT ARE ALWAYS A SINGULAR SUBJECT: First it might be helpful to remember that the singular form of all verbs except to be and to have is formed by adding "s" or "es." For example: dives, runs, answers and crashes, presses and tosses.

When used as a subject or adjective these indefinite pronouns are always singular and, therefore, they take singular verbs. another anybody anyone anything each each oneeither every everybody everything muchneither nobody no one nothing one othersomebody something someone

These pronouns may be used as subjects, and they take a singular verb. Everyone is invited. She says that something is all she wanted for her birthday.

When they are used as adjectives, the noun they modify always takes a singular verb Neither solution works for the committee chair. Each tragedy gives the population given less time to recover from the

previous shock. The number--when used as subject of a sentence (an organized unit)—takes a singular

verb.o The number of tenants without heat increases.

Subjects that stand for definable units of money, measurement, time, organization, food and medical problems always take singular verbs.

6

Page 7: UNIT 2 - Belajar jadi Guru | Sekedar berbagi yang ada di · Web viewHere are some expressions used to invite someone for a party, except: a. How about going to my party b. I was wondering

o Six months is not enough time.o Five thousand dollars is the minimum bid.o Ham and eggs is my favorite meal.

Singular subject followed by phrases such as together with and as well as take singular verb.

o The tax measure, together with its amendments, is normal. When all parts of a compound subject are singular and refer to same person or thing.

o The head of the expedition and mayor of the village is the same person. When the subject is followed by the phrase "the only one of."

o Jake is the only one of the runners who always smiles.o BUT: Jake is one of those runners who always smile.

(In this case, Jake is one of many [those] runners. The verb "have" agrees with "those runners" not with Jake.)

WORDS THAT ARE ALWAYS PLURAL SUBJECT: When a compound subject is joined by a coordinating conjunction (and), it always takes a

plural verb if the subjects refer to different persons or things and if the subject cannot be considered a unit.

o Your investments and property are sure to increase in value. Indefinite pronouns (both, few, many, several) always take plural verbs.

o Both are acceptable choices. "A number" as the subject of a sentence always takes plural verbs.

o A number of tenants are in the building. Certain plural subjects always take plural verbs.

o The news media are under attack. (singular of media: medium)

WORDS THAT ARE EITHER SINGULAR OR PLURAL SUBJECT: When the parts of a compound subject are joined by

or, but, either ... or, neither ... nor, not only ... but also the verb must agree with the subject nearest to the verb.

o Neither the Oregon players nor the coach is overconfident.o Neither the Oregon coach nor the players are intimidated by Arizona.

Collective nouns and certain plural words may take singular or plural verbs-depending on the meaning in the sentence.

The pronouns any, none or some and the nouns all and most:1. take singular verbs when they refer to a unit or quantity

1. Some of the money is missing. (a bag of money)2. take plural verbs when they refer to number, amount or individuals

1. Some of the gold coins are missing. (a series of coins)3. "NONE":

b. "No Two" or "No Amount"--Plural None of the goods are missing. (no amount of the goods) None of the forests are destroyed. (no amount of the forests)

When subject is a fraction or a word such as half, part, plenty, rest, its intended number is suggested by the object of the preposition that follows it.

o Three-fourths of the enemy's army is wounded.o Three-fourths of the enemy's soldiers are wounded.

Short Functional TextInvitation LetterHow to Write a Personal Inviation

However, some people prefer to invite guests in the form of a letter as it's more personal. These are usually sent out a few weeks, or sometimes months, before the celebration itself is due to take place. Below is an example of how you might choose to structure an invitation in letter written form. There can be variations obviously but the key things to include are the name(s) of the person who is making the invitation, who and what the event or celebration is for, the date and time on which it is to be held, the venue or the location of the event and how you want the recipient to respond to let you know whether they'll be attending or not.

If you're sending out a letter to invite guests, as opposed to sending a basic invitation card or note, it's probably likely that it will be slightly more formal than it might be usually, even if you're sending them to friends and family but, depending on your relationships with your guests and the nature and tone of the celebration, it might be written in a more 'wacky' style and be less formal. However, for the purpose of this article, the example letter below adopts a more formal tone for a wedding invitation letter, although you may need to be even grander and more formal if it's a 'high society bash'.

Here is an example of a wedding invitation.

Dear Helen and Dave,

Jenny and I would like to request the pleasure of your company in joining us to celebrate the forthcoming marriage of our son Graham and his fiancée Debbie. The wedding will take place at St. Luke's Church in the village of Bramwell at 2pm on Saturday, June 9, 2007.

Following the ceremony, you are also invited to join us at the Cross Keys Hotel in Hoyton for the wedding reception beginning at 4pm.

I have enclosed a map and directions to both locations and if you need hotel accommodation for the night, we will be happy to arrange that for you. Please contact me if you need any further information. RSVP with the attached card by April 6, 2007

How to Write Acceptance LetterMore often than not, and even if the invitation comes in the form of a letter, you might simply be asked to respond by returning an attached card or even asked to let them know by phone and you should reply in the manner in which you've been asked to do so.

However, if you have simply been told to 'RSVP' and you've been invited to attend by letter, then responding by letter is usually the politest way to let people know whether you are attending or not.

If you are accepting the invitation and are going to attend the celebration, the example letter below gives you an idea on how you might word it. The words and the style you use will ultimately be determined by how formal or informal the invitation letter was made but it need only be brief and to the point.

Here is an example of a short letter accepting an Invitation.

Dear Paul and Jenny,

We are honoured and delighted to accept your invitation to the wedding of Graham and Debbie at St. Luke's Church on Saturday June 9, 2007 and to the reception at the Cross Keys Hotel that follows the ceremony.

Thank you also for arranging the hotel for us. We both look forward to seeing you on June 9.

Yours truly, Helen and David Oldham
