All the news that fits in print ………… lou joseph Before anyone blows a gasket, I did not put all the results in this issue
from the recent phenomenal RONI Labor Day Regional Tournament. Why?
WE RAN OUT OF ROOM!!! ( The balance of the results will appear in the
November issue. )The tournament was wonderful as always, thanks to the
magnificent jobs done by Mary Paulone Carns, Judy Haffner (ed: Lou’s too
modest. He supervised. But OK, you did good, too, Lou.), and Ken and Barb
Bergman, who got so many compliments for the spectacular hospitality that I
was beginning to get nauseous hearing about it! (Just kidding, of course. No
one knows better than I how much work they put into making it seem so ef-
fortless.) The Hyatt is a fabulous site, and the schedule seems to appeal to the
crowds, but without the Bergmans efforts, it would all be for naught. Being a
part of the committee, I can honestly say that everybody made us look good!
Mary, Judy and I want to offer our thanks to everyone who pitched in, and I
offer a special thanks to those who took the time to deliver the novice lectures.
The attendance at the lectures was spectacular, (even Arlene’s!) and I hope the
attendees were as delighted as I was.
Congratulations go to Allen Graves and Mark Lair, who tied for the
over 2000 MP race and to Elio Catafalmo (a repeat performance!) who won
the under 2000 MP race.
Lots of wonderful events coming up in the next few months. THE
PRO-AM GAME IS SOLD OUT! Can you believe it? Arlene Port and Judy
Haffner did such a great job of selling, that they filled the hall at Rodef Sha-
lom! But if you missed your chance, there are plenty of other great games. The
annual Fossick-Goodman team game will be held on 11/7 at the Glenshaw
Moose (see page 3) and the Fall Sectional at the Masonic comes right after
that (also see page 3). Don’t forget that the PBA Classes begin on 10/11 at
Rodef Shalom (see page 2). Well, I’ve run out of room on this page too, so I’d
better sign off….

ELECTION POST
PBA BD OF DIRECTORS ELEC-
TION
Election: Saturday, Nov 12 2010
Nominating Petitions Due By:
Oct 12 2010
The Bylaws of the Pittsburgh
Bridge Association call for a 20-member
Board of Directors, with each Director
serving a two-year term. Terms are stag-
gered, and 10 members are to be elected
each year. For 2009, six Board mem-
bers’ terms are expiring If you would
like to run for the Board of Directors,
you need to submit a nominating peti-
tion, signed by ten members of the Pitts-
burgh Bridge Association. The deadline
for submitting nominating petitions is
10/12/10. In the last few years, we have
had fewer nominations than there were
Board seats to fill, and there has been no
need to hold an election. If more than
ten nominating petitions are received, an
election will be held on , at the Fall Sec-
tional, to select the members of the
Board who will serve from 2010 until
2012. Please submit any nominating
petitions to Board President Bill Holt or
Elections Chair Ron Franck, or any cur-
rent board member
The following board members’

INTERNET POST
You are South, IMP's , NS Vul You hold:
S J98 H Q8 D 732 C J 10 8 4 2
The bidding is:
SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST
PASS 1C 1D 1S
PASS 2S DBL 4S
PASS PASS DBL PASS
? If you pass, what do you lead?
Florine Walters: Lead a Low D Part-
ner is aware that I am broke and will
probably pass. If we are minus 790, it will
probably be duplicated at the other table.
My choice of leads is the two of dia-
monds for the following reasons: More
than likely declarer is short in diamonds
and probably has three or four hearts. East
and West own at least seven hearts be-
tween the two hands. Knowing this, as well
as knowing that the club suit cannot be set
up for many discards, I think it wise to try
for at least one diamond trick before it can
be discarded. Additionally, it is more valu-
able not to expose my Qx in the heart suit,
it should be more valuable defensively
later in the play of the hand. My lead of the
low diamond rather than the high diamond
could be more important for partner to
have an idea of the count in the suit.
Trudy Cohn: Lead QH . I will pass
and then lead the Queen of Hearts. I have
no reason to think that we can make five of
anything so I will go for the plus score for
setting them. My best shot at contributing
tricks to the process is to try for a heart ruff
or to establish partner's heart suit as he has
indicated strong tolerance for hearts.
Marvin Rulin: Lead QH. partner has
values besides diamonds but I have no
reasonable bid. Because of partner's values
I'm tempted to lead a spade to reduce a
cross ruff, but prefer the heart queen.
Maybe I can get a ruff for myself
ED NOTE: Having obtained the rank of
Life Master, we welcome Marvin into the
―Expert‖, rather than the ―Auxiliary‖ part
of the Internet Post.
Bill Holt Bid 5C. Partner has a good hand
with short Spades. If he had a great hand he
would have doubled initially then pulled to his
diamond suit. Partner’s X of 4S is co-operative
but I think I have too many diamonds to want
to defend. My hand will be worth more playing
clubs. If they hit 5c I can consider bidding 5d
or prepare my apologies. I think they are mak-
ing 4S, but if I were to pass I would lead the
QH … trying to score a ruff, as partner is
strong and has heart honors. Mary Paulone Carns: Bid 5D. I have no
defensive tricks and partner can't have 4
tricks. At least he shouldn't. Stan Ruskin: Lead 2D The 1st question is
easy. I pass. Partner has taken over the auction
and a double is penalty in my book. I’m not
going to start guessing now which is what I
would be doing if I did anything else but pass.
The double also tells me that we should be able
to defeat the contract no matter what I lead so I
don’t think I should be doing something un-
usual. Partner is probably 4H and 6 or 7D. If he
were AKxx and AKxxxxx, I think he would
should bid 5D. I don’t think he has a club void
because with the powerful hand he has – play-
ing and defense – he might (should have bid 3C
with a C void. At any rate, I lead the 2D which
will give him count. A close 2nd would have
been a spade but the J98 could be important if
declarer tries to ruff things.
Steve Nolan: Bid 5D Partner's doubles both
make more sense as takeout, and my hand
doesn't have any defensive tricks or distribution
which suggest converting the last double to a
penalty. Of the possible bids, 5H is out --
I don't think partner has more than four hearts,
because with so much distribution, he would
have bid 3H in the second rround. Instead,
I think that partner's distribution is 0-4-5-4 or 0
-4-6-3. Even 0-4-7-2 is possible. I prefer 5D to
5C because (i) it right-sides the contract,
and (ii) partner is likely to take at least as many
tricks in diamonds as in clubs, no matter which
of the possible distributions he holds, and with
some shapes 5D is much better.
Richard Katz: I pass—QH
7
PJ Prabhu: Lead D2. Want to lead through
dummy and cash whatever D tricks we can.
Hearts can wait.
Gail Carns: Lead HQ anything can be right
or wrong.
Herb Sachs Bid 5D. My first thought is
partner is showing 0/4/5/4 or 0/4/6/3 so I
should pull to 4nt/5c/or 5d? not 6/4 in mi-
nors with which 2nt is the descriptive bid. so
why give me a chance to pass??can he possi-
bly have enough defensive tricks to beat
this?? I say no and am bidding 5d.this way
I don’t have to declare or lead!!!
Asim Ulke: Lead QH. I can not imagine
making a call with this hand at the 5 level. It
looks like we need 3 tricks from the heart
suit to come close to beating this hand. After
that, hope for a club or a diamond trick.
Ernie Retetagos Lead QH. The
pass seems clear cut, especially for total trick
aficionados. The Queen of hearts
lead stands out, either to set up 2 heart t
ricks or to win the 1st three tricks.
Bruce Keidan: Lead a Diamond: pass
without question, and lead an unimaginative
diamond.
Jane Marshall: Lead QH pass and lead
the Queen of hearts. I know my partner has
a very good hand, but I am short in hearts
(partner has 4 hearts) and short in dia-
monds. I believe partner would have bid
4NT with 5-5 in the minors. Therefore, I
believe that we can take 3 or 4 tricks on de-
fense and do not believe that we can make 5
clubs.
Richard Katz: Lead QH. I trump lead
might work but on this hand I lead the heart.
AUXILIARY EXPERT:
Paul Rosenberg: Lead QH. We are
vulnerable, and it is their hand, although I expect my partner to have at least 4 dia-
monds, 2 spades and probably 3 clubs and 4
hearts....I am passing and then leading
the queen of hearts, hoping to cash 2 hearts
of my partner and then I ruff one. The
setting trick might come from the clubs

GREENSBURG OUTPOST by Mary Jo Johnson I think that I heard #43 as the representative number of Greensburg players who received points at
the Pittsburgh Regional Tournament at the airport last month. SO.... there probably were more in
attendance even though we hate to admit that some players might not have earned any points. All
Greensburg games were canceled encouraging players to participate in the competition. The venue
(although a little far travel-wise) was great and the Pittsburgh committee did a terrific job !
As a result of earning his small amount of necessary GOLD points, Ed Collins is offi-
cially a LIfe Master. Way to go Ed ! And kudos to your team mates as well: Sally Wozniak and
Dennis and Carol Gibboney. The Thursday game recently honored Ed with a present for achiev-
ing his goal. I know that his team-mates are breathing a little easier these days and so is Ed's wife,
Judy, who is becoming a regular at the bridge table too.
Some other Greensburg players, Audrey Marzolf and Bea Hackenberg, were part of the
team that enabled Dave Legal to become a Life Master at the same tournament. The fourth mem-
ber of that team was Bea's son, Roy. A lot of Greensburg players regularly attend Dave's Monday
game at Export, where Dave had a cake commemorating his achievement.
Do you believe in coincidence? Listen to this one. Erwin Illson and his wife, Mary, both
became Life Masters at Kitty Jo Hellmann's Friday game. Then a while back, Erwin became a
Bronze Life Master at the same game. Where's this going? You guessed it....... a couple of weeks
ago, Mary became a Bronze Life Master at the same infamous Friday game. Kitty Jo is certainly
their lucky charm. Are you going for SILVER?
It's great to see some of Kitty Jo's Friday novices venturing to the Wednesday and
Thurday games. Seen at the tables recently: Mary Kahl and Lynda Gesalman. Y'all come back
now, y' hear?
Larry Evans will be starting a 6 week course on Cue Bidding beginning Thursday, Oct.
14th at the First Christian: Disciples of Christ Church in Greensburg. Class will be from 10: 30 -
11: 30, prior to the regularly scheduled Thursday game. The cost is $25. For further information
you may contact Larry at 724-258-5022. Sign up for the class and then stay to play. Thursday's
game uses the electronic Bridge Pads for scoring and at the conclusion of the game, there are
hand records.
This is a beautiful time of the year and although this has been a particularly hot, sunny
September, we know that fall (at least on the calendar) is here. In another week or two the leaves
will be at their "peak" and we in this area are blessed to have such colorful foliage. ENJOY !!!!!
