DeadlinesThroughout the production process I met all the deadlines. This helped me to ensure that the production of my magazine was efficient as well as the magazine could be sent out on the set release date. I also ensured that I had all the correct content and final edits of my magazine pages before pitching my magazine to the publisher. This helped me to make sure that the publisher could see all the content at its best.

Pre-productionThe deadline to finish my pre-production was Thursday 6th December, this deadline was reached to the best quality possible. The material that was made in this period was the mood board, draft article, hand-drawn drafts etc. This material was then used in the production process to make sure that the production of my magazine was a high quality.

ProductionThe deadline to finish the production process of my magazine was Saturday 29th December, this was for the release date of the magazine the 1st January. During the production process, the photos were taken for the pages, the magazine was edited and made, finally all the content was collected and added.

Post- productionPost production needed to be finished by the 1st of January because this was the release date of the magazine. In the post production the final edits of the magazine was sent to the printing company to print out and then send to the distributor to be sent to the stores for Monday. In the magazine offices the social network staff were marketing and promoting the new edition of the magazine on the social networking sites.

By reaching all the deadlines I was successful at making sure that my production process was efficient as well as at the best standard that it could possibly be.

Post- production skillsSoftware usedThe software that was used to produce my magazine was Adobe Photoshop CS5. This is because it allowed me to make sure that my magazine was the right size, as well as the layout was correct. By having many different tools and options Photoshop allowed me to be able to personalise my magazine and make sure that the house style was always kept.

Tool/ feature used ImageFree transform- I used this tool to make sure that the sizes for all the features of my magazine were the correct size. By holding Shift it helped me to make sure that pixels stayed the same but the image was smaller. This made sure that the magazine was of high quality as the images were still good quality. As well as it ensured that there was no defamation to the subject of the magazine. The free transform tool was used when adding images and features to the magazine pages. By using the free transform tool properly it allowed me to make sure that all the features were the correct size whilst also allowing me to keep a good quality throughout the magazine pages.

Paint tool– The paint tool allowed me to add makeup to the subject, this made sure the quality of the images in my magazine were of a high standard as well as looked appropriate for the magazine. By using the paint tool correctly it allowed me to be able to remove any imperfections from the pictures and make the magazine as high quality as possible.

Ruler tool- The ruler tool allowed me to make sure that the layout of the magazine was appropriate and the gaps between features were the same. It also allowed me to make sure that the features of the magazine were placed in the correct locations. The ruler tool was used throughout all the editing of the magazine pages, by using the tool properly it helped me to ensure the quality and layout of the pages were as accurate as possible.

Burning/ dodging tools – Using these tools allowed me to darken areas in the images that I wanted to blend into the images or be darkened compared to the rest of the image. An example of this is the makeup around the eyes. The dodging tool allowed me to lighten areas in the images such as colour displacement under the eyes of the subject.

Tool/ feature used ImagePen tool- By using the pen tool it allowed me to be able wrap my text around the photos and quote boxes in my pages successfully. This ensured the pages from my magazine were of high quality and no defamation was caused by the text covering the subject in the images. The pen tool was used in the magazine pages in the text area by using this tool as accurately as possible it allowed my magazine reach the professional standard.

Text tool- I used this tool to add all the text to my pages of the magazine, I changed the colour, type of font and size to make sure that the quality was high and the house style was carried out in all the features of the magazine. This insured that my magazine looked professional and could be easily recognised by the reader. The text tool was used on all pages of the magazine as it allowed me to be able to change the fonts and colours accurately.

Eyedropper/ colour swatches- The eyedropper tool helped me to select the colours that I wanted to use and be able to make sure that I could use that colour again. By saving the colour in colour swatches it made the process quicker as the colour could be found easier. Using the colour swatches and eye dropper tools properly it allowed my magazine house style to be carried out through every page.

Drop shadow- By adding a drop shadow I could make sure that the masthead of my magazine stood out so that the reader could immediately notice the magazine. The drop shadow tool was only used in the masthead editing stage as by receiving feedback I decided to make sure that the masthead was visible from a distance. To make sure that I used the drop shadow tool to the best ability I made sure that I asked others opinions to see if it looked as clear and bold as possible.

Black and white- I made my images black and white which was inspired by Q magazine. These changes were made in the images editing stages with the black and white feature. I then corrected the colours and tones to make the image look as clear and appropriate as possible for my magazine.

Post- production skills

Safe working practicesWhen making my front cover and double page spread I needed to ensure to run a risk assessment through safe working practises and how this could affect my final images.

Cropping images- When cropping images and removing any unwanted areas I needed to make sure that I did not cause any offense or defame the subject. Cropping the images is important to make sure that all the background is removed so that the images can be placed on the white background of the magazine. The tools that I needed to use for this is the cropping tool, the selection and mask feature to ensure that I have selected the image properly.

Wrapping text- Wrapping the text using the pen tool around the images allows me to be able to fit all the text around images whilst making sure not to cover any of the image. This ensures that I do not breach the editors code and defame the person.

Resizing images- To resize the images and prevent distorting the image I need to use the free transform tool and hold down shift on the keyboard. This keeps the pixels the same whilst making the image smaller.

Colour swatches- By using the eyedropper tool and saving the colour to colour swatches it helps me to make sure that the quality of my magazine is high as the colour will always be the same throughout the magazine. This makes sure that the house style of my magazine is continued throughout the whole magazine. As well as making changing the colour of text easier in the editing process because the colour is easier to find.

Editing interview- When editing the interview with the text features I need to make sure not to change what the subject said. This ensures that the editors code is not breached and no offense towards the subject of the interview is not made. I need to use the text colour feature as well as the sizing and font. This continues the house style throughout my magazine whilst also allowing me to be able to differentiate the questions and answers in the interview.

Colour and font(s)ColourTo maintain the house style of the magazine I used Eye dropper tool to capture the colour from the masthead. I then saved this into my colour swatches and used it in the correct locations.

My house style colour was a specific shade of green, this was saved into my swatches once captured from my masthead, I then changed the text from my headlines and cover lines to this shade by selecting the text and then selecting the colour from my colour swatches.I also used the colour swatch to change features like the quote boxes and page number boxes. This allowed me to be able to keep a high quality throughout my magazine.

By maintaining my house style throughout my magazine it makes the reader recognise the magazine from the colour scheme, this could help the magazine to become a market leader as the magazine will be recognisable by most magazine readers.

As seen in this picture I have saved the house style green for the magazine in my colourswatches in Photoshop. It was titled ‘M_Green’ so that it was clear that this was the greenfor the magazine.

Font(s)I collected my main font for the magazine from Dafonts.com. The font that I chose was Longtime, I was inspired to use this font from looking at different magazines and noticing that serif fonts are easier to read in a smaller font. The other font that I have used in my magazine is Arial, this was for my masthead. I found this font in Photoshop when making my masthead and made the font bold italic, this helped to make sure that the masthead looked appropriate for my magazine. Longtime font was used in all other places in my magazine this can highlight the consistency throughout my magazine, it can also increase brand identity as the public sees the font they could think of ‘M’ magazine. Longtime font is easy to read in a smaller format as well as a larger font which makes this font suitable for my magazine as the interview and website is in a smaller size, whilst the in the headlines, quote boxes etc. the font is in a larger format.

ChangesThe main changes I made to my production work was in the layout of my magazine pages. This helped me to make sure that the quality of my magazine pages was high and pages were appropriate for publishing. I gained feedback from my pages to come to the conclusion on the changes that needed to be made. Below it shows the main change of the layout that was made, which was adding the artists logo to the top right hand corner. This helped me to decrease the amount of white space on the page as well as raise awareness of the subject of interview.

ChangesAnother change that was made to the front page was the positioning of the headline, this allowed me to make it bigger and stand out from the rest of the magazine. As well as by placing the headline across the page it highlights the main story within the edition of the magazine. This led me to change the positing of the puff promotion, so that the magazine looked suitable and professional. To make the headline stand outand become bold on the page I also added a white strokearound the edge of the text.

Another change that I made to my magazine pages was editing the images further. This is because I wanted to make the skin of the subject appear as smooth as possible. I also wanted to make sure that the image reflected the personality of the subject as close as possible. I did this by adding more makeup to the subject and darkening the hair to create the contrast in the black and white image. I made these changes to the images with a varietyof different tools such as the burning in tool, paint tool, swatches and changing the exposure of the hair.

Additionally I added image captions on my double page spread, this helped to make sure that reader understood all the content and was also inspired by other magazines. By adding captions to the images I could also add comments that the subject of the interview had said. This allowed the reader to connect to the subject even further and gain an insight on what the subject said, which was not related to the interview questions.

Annotated final pages CoverlinesThe coverlines of my magazine follow the house style of my magazine as the colours are green and black. The sizes of the font become smaller as they go down the page to highlight the bigger or more important articles in the magazine.

Masthead/ straplineThe masthead of the magazine highlights all the colours of the house style of the magazine as it is green, black and white. By adding a bold font and drop shadow to the masthead it makes the feature bold from a distance. As well as by adding the strapline to the masthead it increases brand identity throughout the magazine.

Puff promotionMy puff promotion was placed on the side of the front cover in the white blank section of the page. This follows the house style of the magazine with the colours and also broadens brand identity with the logo placed at the bottom of the circle.

HeadlineWhen placing the headline on the page I needed to make sure that no defamation was caused. I placed it on the bottom of the page as it allowed me to be able to make the font bigger and bolder.

BarcodeThe barcode box includes the logos relating to the social media that the magazine uses as well the logo of the magazine and publisher. The box also has the magazine website and issue date.

Main imageWhen choosing where to place the main image I took inspiration from Q magazine and made it as big as the front cover and placed it in the middle. I also took inspiration from Q magazine and made the image black and white.

Annotated final pagesHeadline/ stand firstThe headline and stand first are placed across the top of the page to captivate the readers attention and makethem want to read on. The colours link with the housestyle.

Artist logoThe artist logo is placed in the top right hand corner of the double page spread to raise awareness of the subject of the interview to the reader.

Quote boxesThe quote boxes are placed throughout the page to help break up the text. It also helps to gain the readers attention before they read the article.

Main imageThe main image of the magazine takes up most of the right hand page. This was inspired by the big images throughout Q magazine. I made the image black and white to make sure that it linked with the front cover image.

Smaller imageThe smaller image is placed to break up the page but to also create interest in the article.

Drop capitalThe drop capital is one of the few features to help break up the text. It also allows the reader to see where the article starts.

TextThe text is differentiated between the questions and answers by the different colours within the article.

Page numberThe page number in the bottom corners increases brand identity throughout the magazine whilst also linking with the house scheme of the magazine. This is because the colours are the house scheme colours and the logo and website have been placed on each one.

LO4 ConclusionIn the final learning outcome I edited the materials to produce a final print of the magazine. In this section it was important to make sure that I reached the deadlines so that I could edit the final copies of the magazine. The production process was split into three main sections in which the deadlines needed to be reached. These sections were pre-production, production and post- production. The deadline of editing the magazine was important to reach so that the post- production process could be carried out.

By keeping note of the tools that I used in the editing stages it allows me to be able to use these tools in the future and be aware of the place that they need to be used and what they will do to the specific area of the magazine. By including pictures in the post production skills table it allows me or the editor of the magazine in the future be able to find these tools as they will know where they are located or at least know what they look like.

Safe working practises was important in the editing process of the magazine as it made sure that the magazine pages were at a high quality. The safe working practises also allowed me to ensure that the magazine reached the regulations that are set by risk assessments that are carried out before producing the magazine.

Another section in the learning outcome was looking at the colours and fonts used in the magazine. This highlighted that the green that will be linked to the magazine is saved in the Photoshop samples titled as M_Green. This will ensure that the future editions of the magazine will be at a high quality and they will all follow the house style that is set for the magazine brand.

The final parts of the learning outcome is changes that I have made to the magazine pages that I originally made. And finally the final annotated pages of the magazine.
