HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
2011UNION COLLEGE
A YEAR OF SUPERLATIVES
Annual Report
The heart of any institution is its people. For Union College, those people have been and continue to be the students who enroll and matriculate here; the faculty, staff and administration who work here; the alumni who attended and graduated; the trustees who provide guidance and help toward fulfilling our goals; the friends and families, near and far, who have developed appreciative connections; and the people from businesses, corporations, trusts and foundations who have established supportive relationships with Union College. Each year we publish this Honor Roll of Donors, which in a small but very sincere way recognizes all those who remain connected with, interested in, and supportive of the college and its values and mission. I would like to add here my personal note of thanks and appreciation to all who have made gifts and donations (some at a sacrificial level) not only to underwrite current operations and programs, but to provide a means by which Union can move ahead with its goals for the future through the “Strategic Plan 2020” (a brief outline is included farther back). The future continues to look bright and holds any number of exciting possibilities. We welcome the opening of the Stivers Aquatics and Wellness Center, a short distance from campus. In the short term we will begin repairing the exterior of the Miller Science building in addition to completely renovating the former Knox Co. Hospital which when finished will house our new Nursing and Health Sciences, as well as Athletic Training and our Health and Counseling Services. The implementation of our new strategic plan will open up new and exciting opportunities not only for those currently involved, but also for those who will begin their own connection and relationship with Union College. I ask that your hearts remain open to renewing your support of our dedicated efforts in providing a bright future for generations to come. Best wishes and heartfelt thanks to all. And may God continue to watch over and bless Union College.
Thomas J. McFarland, Ph.D.
A LETTER FROM
THE PRESIDENT
RECOGNITION LEVELSVision Maker SocietiesIn 1879, Union College arose out of a need – a need for edu-cation. For the citizens of Barbourville, then a town of 450 citizens and three brick buildings, establishing an institution of higher learning for children was imperative. They be-lieved education was the path to leadership and a brighter future. With that same visionary spirit, Union continues to be a springboard for great minds, for young leaders, and for all those with a commitment to education—thanks to many who continue to invest in the mission.

CONTENTS
This word cloud of names is made up of alumni
who are featured on the pages ahead in biographical
snippets we have dubbed “superlatives.” As high
school students, each was undoubtedly deserving
of the “Most Likely to Succeed” award. But we’ve
put an unusual—and we hope, fun—twist on this
traditional game of honorary titles. Sophomoric?
You could say that. Clever? There is an argument
for that, too. But whichever camp you’re in, we
hope you enjoy learning a small, yet significant,
piece of information about each of these people,
who are among Union College’s most accomplished
graduates and attendees.
The 25 “Alumni Superlatives” represent the first
of many that will be unveiled to a greater audience
in the alumni section of Union College’s new Web
site, which is scheduled to launch in late summer. A
second installment will be added in the fall. In the
meantime, you might ask yourself, just for fun: What
am I most likely to do?

RECOGNITION LEVELSDaniel Stevenson Society • $1,000,000 or more (lifetime member)**Credited with rescuing Union from almost certain closing, Daniel Stevenson of Versailles, Kentucky, served as Union’s president from 1888 to 1897. He fulfilled his dream of establishing a Methodist college in the area he considered in the greatest need of service. He was the first president after the College became affiliated with The Methodist Episcopal Church.
Fanny Speed Society • $500,000 - $999,999*Mrs. Fanny Speed of Louisville was Union’s first great benefactress. Her interest in Dr. Stevenson’s purchase of Union’s property is evident through her gifts totaling over $60,000 during his administration. Following her death in 1902, Union received half of her estate, approxi-mately $266,000. These funds helped to complete Speed Hall and rebuild both Stevenson Hall and the Administration Building (renamed Classroom Building and later Centennial Hall).
Abigail E. Weeks Society • $100,000 - $499,999*Miss Abigail Weeks, a beloved head of the English department and librarian, served the College for 32 years. In the June 2, 1937, issue of the Orange and Black, the school paper commented regarding her service to Union by writing, “She gave to Union College her sacrificial loyalty, and fulfilled the sentiment of her own lines, written as a fitting close to the college Alma Mater, ‘We will live for thee.’”

JOHN BIANCHI, D.M.D., ’74Most Likely to Give His Eye Teeth
Dr. Bianchi is a retired dentist who owned a practice in Harlan County, Ky. His main goal was to bring the most up-to-date dental procedures to the area, while providing the best possible care. In his daily practice, he observed a simple, yet powerful, mission: “If anyone is in pain, we will see them that day.” In addition to dentistry, Dr. Bianchi served on the Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation Board for 12 years. In this post, he helped create jobs and brought economic development to eastern Kentucky.
...to ensure quality dental care for eastern Kentuckians.

TOM BUDDENHAGEN, ’72Most Likely to Fly and Hover into Greatness
...with innovations in aviation. The Boeing V-22 Osprey is a military tiltrotor aircraft that flies like a plane and hovers like a helicopter. De-signed to accommodate the needs of the armed services, it is twice as fast as a helicopter and is capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight. But even more notable than that is that Tom Buddenhagen helped engineer it. He worked on the V-22 Osprey from concept to the completion of research and development, and finally acceptance by the Navy. He retired in May after 34 years with Boeing as an industrial engineer.

ALBERT “HAP” CAWOOD, ’62Most Likely to Editorialize with a Novel Approach
...which led to his success as a journalist and fiction writer.
Mr. Cawood is a retired editorial page editor for the Dayton Daily News, where he worked for 34 years. CLYDE “JACK” DOWNEY, ’66Most Likely to Make “At-Risk” a Thing of the Past
...and he is well on his way.
As president and CEO of The Children’s Shelter, Mr. Downey grew the agency from an annual budget of less than $300,000 to $15 million and increased his staff from 50 to 270 while increasing services to more than 4,000 at-risk children annually. This all happened in a 15-year span. Imagine what will transpire 15 years from now. Did leading a disciplined life contribute to this accelerated rate of progress? Quite possi-bly. A 26-year U.S. Airforce veteran, he served as president of the Air Force Association world-wide Junior Officer’s Council and was an honor graduate of advanced military education.

MARY PAULINE FOX, ’51Most Likely to be At Ease with a Stethoscope
...by being a medical school pioneer.
While Dr. Fox attended medical school at University of Louisville in the mid-1950s, she was undoubtedly noticed on campus as one of the few representing her gender. Her presence there was even more notable because of this distinction: Dr. Fox was the first woman member of the ROTC in the United States among medical school students. She enjoyed a long medical career in Pineville, Ky., and was also regional director for the Kentucky Department of Public Health. She is retired now but continues to lecture on child and spousal abuse, aging, family planning, as well as death and dying.

...such as Oscar the Grouch or Kermit the Frog.
Producers for Sesame Street recently called Dr. Hensley to enlist his help in putting together a set of age appropriate lessons in financial responsibility to use on their programming. It’s not surprising they would turn to Dr. Hensley for advice. As Director of Education for the National Endowment for Financial Educa-tion, he is valued as an expert in financial literacy and education. His work at NEFE involves facilitation of several financial literacy initiatives that seek to increase the financial well-being of Americans through the advancement of new perspectives, research and trends in personal finance.

...but wait—she already did that and so much more.
Ms. Houghton’s career in entertainment has landed her on many stages, including Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre and New York Music Theater Festival. She has over 20 years of experience in musical and dramatic theater and holds memberships in three performer’s unions: Actors Equity Association, Screen Actor Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. To qualify for membership, one must first be hired to perform in each of the industry branches. Membership in all three indicates that she has worked and is recognized as a professional in all three disciplines.

LISA JORDAN, ’88, ’94 MAMost Likely to be Posed for Power
...through blending passions for yoga and creativity.
While Ms. Jordan is both a certified yoga teacher and Pranic healer, she is also president of a nationally recognized, award-winning higher education marketing agency in Atlanta, Ga., called Mindpower, Inc. If you look for her on their Web site, however, you’ll not see “President” by her name. Rather, she is identi-fied as “Wise Woman,” an apt description for a creative-minded professional who has vast experience in telling stories in powerful, strategic ways.

He is much too busy serving as president at the moment. Prior to being asked to lead the institution, he was vice president of Academic Affairs and dean of the faculty. He was elected by the faculty to serve as Union College faculty trustee for two terms, from 1994-2000, and was elected by that same group to serve on the Faculty Relations Committee.

MARY PICKARD STANTON, ’73Most Likely to Document a “Sorrow”ful Journey
Ms. Stanton published a work of nonfiction in 1998 called From Selma to Sorrow: the Life and Death of Viola Liuzzo. This biographical account of a white Detroit housewife’s murder at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan during the 1965 Selma Voting Rights March is powerful, compelling reading. “Home of the Brave,” a documentary film based on Ms. Stanton’s book, was nominated in 2004 for an Academy Award. Ms. Stanton has also authored several other nationally-acclaimed nonfiction books depicting life in Alabama during the bus boycotts.
...and draw national attention to a powerful story in Civil Rights.

WILLIAM “BILL” STARNES, Ph.D., ’52Most Likely to Stabilize the World
...with revolutionary breakthroughs in chemistry research.Through his work at the College of William and Mary, Dr. Starnes made a ground-breaking discovery. Starnes invented Esther Thiol technology for the heat stabilization of vinyl plastics. Here is why that is important: When PVC plastics are heated, they degrade. To prevent degradation, toxic heat stabilizers are added, which are harmful to the environment. Ester Thiols, however, are non-toxic and can be used to replace the hazardous heavy metal compounds.

FRANK STONITSCH, ’95, ’02 MAMost Likely to Adapt and Overcome
Mr. Stonitsch was the speaker at Union’s 123rd Commencement ceremony in 2002. The New York City firefighter, who was dispatched to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, shared stories with graduates about the unity and patriotism he witnessed during this horrific time in our nation’s history. On this platform, he urged students to remember “where we’ve been, where we are and where we should be.” He is currently lieutenant with the Fire Department of New York, Engine Company 10 in Lower Manhattan.
...and never give up....with revolutionary breakthroughs in chemistry research.
