    WESTERN WRESTLING CONFERENCE

Coming o their best season, the Western Wrestling Conerence, an NCAA Division

I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its th year o competition in 2010-11.

Charter members o the Western Wrestling Conerence include: the United

States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University o Northern

Colorado, the University o Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah

Valley University and the University o Wyoming.

The WWC had a breakout year in 2009-10, with three league wrestlers earning

All-American honors. The conerence has now had six All-Americans in itsrst

our years o existence. In 2010, Wyomings Joe LeBlanc (184) placed ourth at the

NCAA Tournament, Northern Colorados Justin Gaethje (157) nished seventh and

Northern Iowas Jarion Beets (174) was eighth. All three o those wrestlers will

return in 2010-11, as Beets and Gaethje are seniors, and LeBlanc is a junior.

During the 2009 NCAA Championships, LeBlanc nished th at 184 pounds,

while UNIs Moza Fay was sixth at 165 pounds and th at that same weight in

    2008.

In all, 17 wrestlers rom the WWC qualied or the 2010 NCAA Division I

Wrestling National Championships, 14 via automatic slots and three at-large

selections. The WWC had our competitors who were seeded in the top-12 o their

brackets. At 125 pounds, Wyomings Michael Martinez was the No. 11 seed, while

Utah Valleys Ben Kjar had the nal seeded position, No. 12. In the 165-pound

weight class, UWs Shane Onuer was the No. 8 seed and his teammate, LeBlanc,

was in the No. 7 slot at 184 pounds.

The 2010 NCAA West Regional served as the conerence tournament or the

ourth straight season. The tournament was held in Frost Arena on the South

Dakota State University campus in Brookings, S.D. In the team race, Wyoming

came rom behind and won the West Regional team title by a hal point over the

24-time deending champion Nor thern Iowa Panthers. It is UWs rst-ever West

Regional team title. The Cowboys also won the leagues regular season dual title

with an undeeated 6-0 record. Wyoming and Northern Iowa tied or the regular

season championship in 2009, and UNI was tops in the league ater both the 2007

    and 2008 seasons.

The leagues three major postseason awards in 2010 were given to Wyomings

LeBlanc or Wrestler o the Year, Cole VonOhlen rom Air Force as Freshman o the

Year and Northern Iowas Brad Penrith as Coach o the Year ater his nal season.

In the near uture, the goal o the league is to replace the West Regional with

the conerence tournament, which would then serve as the NCAA qualier.

The 2011 NCAA West Regional will be held on Sunday, March 6 at Clune Arena

on the Air Force Academy grounds in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The WWC recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and ull-season

basis. Individual awards include Wrestler o the Week; All-Conerence teams; an

Academic All-Conerence team; and Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach o the Year

awards. The league also crowns a team champion ollowing the conclusion o the

regular season conerence competition and the postseason tournament.

The governance o the Western Wrestling Conerence remains primarily with the

member institutions. Scheduling o contests, assignment o ocials and certain

media relations unctions remain with member institutions.

With league members spread out over six states and two time zones, schools

are required to compete against our league schools in dual action to be eligible or

the regular season conerence championship. Schools are encouraged to schedule

as many conerence schools as possible.

A major benet o having a league that is geographically spread out so ar is

the added exposure both in terms o media and recruiting - in new destinations.

The conerence aliation also generates much interest within the seven schools

substantial alumni base, which numbers nearly 800,000 combined.

North Dakota State, Northern Colorado and South Dakota State have all made

the move rom Division II to Division I since join ing the WWC. UVU moved directly

rom Junior College (NJCAA) Athletics to NCAA Division I and completed its reclas-

    sication during the 2009-10 season.
