Welcome to the 24th edition of the Rixton-with-Glazebrook’s ‘in the know’ newsletter produced by the Hamilton Davies Trust and distributed voluntarily by local residents - many thanks to them.
Parish Plan Action Groups have been actively attending meetings and turning plans into actions - for updates see p.8. Youth groups, dance and fitness classes and activities for the more mature members of the community are not in short supply - see p.9-13. NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Changes are afoot at The Rhinewood Hotel in Glazebrook. To view the planning application visit http://www.warrington.gov.uk/planning then insert planning application No. 2014/24573 and click the search button.
Your HS2 Action Group have been working closely with other action groups along the route, particularly neighbouring groups in Culcheth, Lymm and Warburton, and have also been working with Warrington Borough Council and HS2 Ltd. They said:“We have agreed to be part of a HS2 Liaison Group that the Council are intending to facilitate, who’s aims are to try and get the best possible deal for Warrington if HS2 is to proceed. Since the publication of Lord Higgins report HS2 Plus we believe the final decision on the route will now be delayed until next year, this only increases the blight period people will suffer and this is a concern for us all. We would like to extend our thanks to Ken Tinsley and pass condolences to his family as Ken sadly passed away recently. Ken was an avid supporter of the Action Group, helping to distribute forms and leaflets and getting a significant number of consultation response forms completed and sent in.” You can keep up to date with your HS2 Action Group by subscribing to receive their newsletter by emailing [email protected] or by visiting http://www.warringtonstophs2 or their Facebook page warringtonstophs2 or on Twitter @warringtonhs2
Glazebrook Post Office is now open on Wednesday afternoons - see p.18 for opening times. Peter is closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. 2015 diaries and calenders are now in stock.
Thanks to local residents the ‘Shine the Light’ group is now formed and making steps towards their aim to gently uplight the Parish War Memorial in Hollins Green so it can proudly be seen both night and day. A talk by Keith Thompson, called ‘Looking for Jack’, is being held on 6th November to raise funds towards the project - see p. 14.
‘We Will Remember Them’Remembrance Service on Sunday 9th November 9.45am, St. Helen’s Church, Hollins Green. See Parish Councillor Liz Clarke’s message on p.22 for more details.

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES
The Rixton with Glazebrook Carnival Committee would like to express their thanks to the residents of the parish for their support of the Carnival in June 2014. They said: “The staging of such an event naturally required kind financial donations from several funders, who we are indebted to. In addition, numerous volunteers donated their time to help the Carnival run smoothly and without their support we would not have been able to hold the event. Many local groups hosted stalls and raised funds to support the good work they do in our parish. It was brilliant to see so many people having fun on Hollinfare Village Green, photographs from the day can be found on rixtonwithglazebrook.net.”Such was the positive feedback from the event, the committee are now in the process of organising next year’s Carnival, to be held on Saturday 27th June 2015; please make a note! Already they have over £2,000 in the pot for the event, raised from raffle and stalls. Updates of the programme will be provided in the Spring edition of ‘in the know’ and on rixtonwithglazebrook.net.” If you enjoyed yourself at the last Carnival and would like to get involved with the 2015 event, please contact Neil Fairfax on 0161 777 6957 or at [email protected]
A packed St. Helen’s Church enjoyed a performance by Salford Royal Choir. An interesting talk was also given by Rev John Macaulay on the many changes within the Church of England during his 50 years ministry. Sunday School welcomed more new pupils - contact Alan Domville on 0161 775 9360. Friends of St. Helen’s Church held a successful exhibition of memorabilia to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. The church bells tolled as all those from the village who died in the conflict were remembered by name.
Hollins Green Scouts and Cubs attended a weekend camp where they enjoyed archery and orienteering as well as many other activities. Well done to the six cubs who received their ‘backwoods cooking badge’ and ‘hikes away badge’ following a survival skills competition during which they had to build a shelter, make a fire and cook over the fire. They are now working towards their challenge awards and looking forward to their ‘movie night’. Congratulations to the four Cubs who were recently invested. Cubs have places available for boys and girls aged 8-10 years of age - for contact details see p.10. 5

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES
The Rotary Club of Irlam will be bringing some Christmas cheer to our Parish with their Santa float once again this December - see p.15. Dates may alter, subject to weather conditions.
Well done to Rixton Tennis Club’s mixed team who won Division 3 and have been promoted to Divison 2. See p.11 for details of the Club.
Parents and staff had tissues at the ready as Rixton-with-Glazebrook Pre-school’s children gave an end of year performance at which children who were leaving sang the tear jerking ‘Going to School Together’ song. Many new families joined Pre-school during the Autumn term and all children have settled in really well and are enjoying the exciting range of activities on offer. As part of the Warrington Snowman Festival children will be making a pom-pom snowball. Pre-school wish to thank all who support them. For contact details see p.10.
In July fourteen St. Helen’s School pupils conducted a moving leavers’ service in which they shared fond memories and hopes and dreams for the future. Twenty children started school in September. Warrington Borough Council have continued to develop the role of Safety Officers and two pupils have been appointed as Officers for the school. As well as leading assemblies and preparing a special notice board, they will be holding competitions to encourage children to consider the implications of road safety and the importance of wearing appropriate clothing at night so they can be seen. Children in Year 5 successfully completed a Bikeability Training Course, a ‘Cycling Proficiency’ for the 21st Century, giving them the skills and confidence to cycle safely in and around today’s modern roads and environment. Twenty five children in Key Stage 2 have been ‘early birds’ this term attending school at 8am every Tuesday to take part in fencing lessons. All children received certificates at the end and those who have been taking part for the last four years were able to achieve the Platinum Award.
All Creatures Vets raised £130 for Cat Rescue (CHAR) at our Carnival and £240 for Manchester Dogs Home thanks to the support of clients.
Fifty one dancers from Doreen’s Dance Class enjoyed a weekend in Llandudno and look forward to a Christmas Eve Dance and a three day break in 2015. 6
ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES

iTea and BiscuitsDue to popular demand afternoon sessions from 1pm - 3pm were introduced in September, as well as the morning sessions from 10am - 12pm. Sessions are free and have proven to assist local residents in developing their understanding of technology and its everyday practical uses, such as shopping and paying bills online. The next block of sessions commence on Thursday 29th January 2015. Contact David Taylor on 0161 222 4003 or [email protected]. HDT wish to thank the volunteers and businesses who support the sessions by providing one to one support for learners. Rixton-with-Glazebrook Parish Plan UpdateWith planning permission granted, renovation works have begun on the Community Shop in readiness for a pre-Christmas opening. The group were recently granted £9,500 from ‘Awards for All’ for fridges and freezers. CV’s for interviews for Shop Manager and Shop Assistants are being shortlisted. The Shopping Group have already received some offers of help, but need more support from the community to help with painting and kitting out the shop interior and volunteering to help run the shop. If you can help or need more information contact [email protected] or contact Helen or Pete - details below.
The Look of the Parish Group and volunteers held another litter pick in July. Flower beds and additional planters around the Parish have added some lovely summer colour and more bulbs being planted this autumn will add further swathes of colour in the Spring. Funding from Stronger Together was secured to purchase three dog bag dispensers, which will soon be installed on Hollinfare Village Green, near the front of School and Glazebrook Village Green.
Successful negotiations between the Getting Around Group and First Manchester Buses have resulted in a half hourly bus service to and from Hollins Green stopping at the Trafford Centre on route to Manchester. Following meetings over the past two years with WBC Highways Department resurfacing, new gullies and pavement clearance have taken place on Glazebrook Lane - A57 to Carlton Way.
The Recreation and Leisure Group held an enjoyable ‘Walk and Talk’ at Rixton Claypits, raising funds towards future projects. The group have met with the Parish Council and WBC to present outline plans for improvements to Hollinfare Village Green and invite their initial comments and concerns. An open consultation evening will be held in 2015 to share proposed plans with local residents enabling them to give feedback, ideas or voice any concerns.
The next Parish Plan Group public meeting is on Wednesday 14th January, 7.30pm, Glazebrook Methodist Church - all welcome. Parish Plan Secretary - Helen Weight - 07530 895677Parish Plan Chair - Pete Higson - [email protected]

WARRINGTON BOROUGH COUNCILLORS updatesPlanned resurfacing work on Glazebrook Lane is now completed. We have been monitoring the Traffic Management Measures for Holly Bush Lane and the ensuing problems ever since the shooting club opened. There is a serious lack of visibility on turning from Holly Bush Lane onto the A57 and road geometry does not allow for improvement. Therefore the proposal was to make Holly Bush Lane ‘One Way’ (northbound between Woodend Lane and Prospect Lane) in order to prevent traffic from leaving Prospect Farm and travelling south to exit Holly Bush Lane onto the A57. This is timely as a number of residents have alerted us to the fact that vehicles are still using this route instead of Prospect Lane, as was made clear to the owners by the Planning Inspector. Decision has been deferred. We continue to report day to day issues that need attention, namely street sweeping, gulley emptying and jetting to clear obstructions, lighting and highway maintenance. Regular surgeries for residents with council related or policing issues are held at St. Helen’s Church House - see pages 14-17 for dates and times or contact us anytime. EAST WARRINGTON AREA MANAGER - Ruth WhitworthThe East Area Plan was launched at the Town Hall on 29 September. This plan sets out the broad priorities for Neighbourhoods in Warrington in the East Area for the next three years. The five priorities are to reduce social isolation, to maximise household income and reduce child poverty, to promote health and wellbeing, to improve community safety and reduce the fear of crime, and to increase community capacity and resilience. The East Area Team, along with officers from other organisations, residents and local councillors have been out in the East Area over October, talking to local residents, and learning about the local area, as part of engaging the local community in the delivery of the Area Plan. A short questionnaire was asked on the day, and the results will inform the projects that happen in the local area.To get involved or to apply to the local fund or Community Chest, contact East Area manager Ruth Whitworth on [email protected]

RIXTON-WITH-GLAZEBROOK PARISH COUNCIL (PC) Message from Chairman Cllr. Liz Clarke
“As we commemorate 100 years of the start of World War I it would be wonderful if as many residents as possible could join us in remembering those who gave their lives. Come along to the Community Hall on Sunday 9th November at 9.30am to join us as we leave for St. Helen’s Church for a 9.45am Remembrance Service or around the cenotaph at 10.45am for 2 minutes silence and laying of wreaths. The Parish Council scattered thousands of red poppy seeds around the village this year. Hopefully, after laying dormant over the winter, they will give us a lovely show next year!
We now have a filter lane at Warburton Bridge traffic lights coming from Warrington, enabling traffic to turn right onto the bridge. This has cut down the number of cars using the village as a ‘rat run’. Also a 20 mile per hour zone has been employed, which all helps to make our village a safer environment.
The Parish Council organised a litter pick recently and the people who volunteered worked hard and picked up seventeen bags of rubbish. In an ideal world litter would be picked up regularly by WBC, but unfortunately in this economic climate that is not going to happen. If everyone would take responsibility for the weeds and litter just outside their own house or business the villages would look so much tidier, I know that many people do this already.”Liz

Cubs have places available for boys and girls aged 8-10 years of age - for contact details see p.10. 5
