M A K E E V E RY M O M E N T CO U N TAt the UK’s only Waldorf Astoria

ello and welcome to the Winter/Spring edition of Live Unforgettable, our in-house magazine. We will be sharing

some of the latest news from the hotel, as well as uncovering a few of the best things taking place in the capital over the coming months and further afield too.

So, what will 2019 bring after the Hogmanay celebrations? Whether this is your first time to the capital, or perhaps you are lucky enough to return again, there are always new and exciting experiences being introduced. Edinburgh is packed with heritage and culture and always seems to attract the most exciting exhibitions and the most up-and-coming talent to perform across its theatres.

To kickstart the city’s culture vibe we will see the return of Les Miserables to the Festival Theatre in January, this will be the first time the production has been back in a decade and is definitely not to be missed. But, if you would rather take to the outdoors and explore the city on foot, then I would recommend a bracing winter walk up Arthur’s Seat, an ideal location to take in some stunning panoramic views.

Back at the hotel, we have been busy developing new experiences to bring together the best we have to offer, combining the talent of the teams in the restaurants, bars and spa along with some of the best local producers. So, if you’re looking for a refreshing cocktail, an indulgent afternoon tea or some pampering in the spa, we have it all under one roof for you to relax and enjoy.

Wishing you a truly unforgettable stay.

Start your day – with a light workout at the gym or a refreshing dip in the pool. Burn off a few calories and get your system started. Go at your own pace and take your pick from the cardio options in the gym to some laps in the pool, or simply relax in the sauna and steam rooms.

4Need a sugar fix – then there is no better place to be in the city than the stunning Peacock Alley for a decadent afternoon tea experience topped with a glass of bubbles. Start off with some delicate finger sandwiches, followed by freshly baked scones and a delectable selection of cakes and patisseries made daily by the team. Served daily between 12-5pm.

Relax & unwind – home to the only Guerlain Spa in the UK, this haven of relaxation offers the perfect selection of treatments to take away the stresses of the day. Let your therapist design the ultimate treatment especially for you and afterwards continue to unwind in the comfort of the spa’s luxurious relaxation room.

Aperitif or Digestif – there’s always time for a glass of something in The Caley Bar, to start or finish off your evening. With an extensive range of classic cocktails and contemporary additions, there is something to appeal to everyone’s taste buds. Open daily from 4pm till late.

It’s brunchtime – if only it was the weekend every day! The Galvin Brasserie de Luxe offers a wonderful brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays from midday with some of our faithful favourites such as eggs Benedict to the more unusual baked duck egg, truffle, potato & parmesan.

Fine dining with views – the beautiful dining room of The Pompadour boasts wonderful views of the city and in particular the iconic Edinburgh Castle. This can only be topped by the incredible dishes created by Head Chef, Dan Ashmore and his team using the best ingredients from Scotland’s natural larder. Open Wednesday to Sunday for dinner and Sunday lunch.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO L AUNCH ANOTHER EDINBURGH MONOP OLY BOARD AFTER THE F IRST ONE WAS INTRODUCED 20 YEARS AGO?

Edinburgh has always been one of our favourite editions but unfortunately the old one no longer represented the city and the 20th anniversary was the perfect time for Mr Monopoly to return.

HOW HAS THE BOARD CHANGED FROM THE F IRST VERSION?

As well as showing off some of the recent and future additions to the city (the Scottish Parliament and Edinburgh St James to name a few), the biggest change has to be that this is the first Scottish city to have its very own bespoke tokens.

NEW PL AYING TOKENS WERE INTRODUCED TO THE EDINBURGH BOARD, WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?

I think my favourite has to be Mons Meg. The bagpipes and the penguin are great too but when I was in Edinburgh putting the board together I visited the castle and loved the story behind the old cannon.

TELL US ABOUT MONOP OLY’S VIS ION TO BRING FAMIL IES TOGETHER THROUGH THE GIFT OF PL AY?

We love the fact that in the age of digital gamification families still sit around the table and play our games...even if there are a few arguments now and again.

M E E T

T H E

M A K E R S

IN ‘MAKE YOUR OWN OP OLY’ WHAT WOULD YOU PUT IN THE PL ACE OF MAYFAIR?

That’s a very tough question! Something in my home county of Yorkshire, but don’t make me pick.

DO YOU EVER CHEAT WHE N YOU PL AY?

I’d never cheat in a game but I do like finding loopholes. For example there’s only a limited number of houses in the game so it can be fruitful to buy plenty of houses early and delay the hotels.

WHAT LOCATION WOULD YOU L IKE TO SEE APPEA R IN THE FUTURE THAT HASN ’T TO DATE ON A NEW BOAR D?

We’ve done plenty of great editions in the UK and are doing more and more around the world. The one I’d love to see one day would be Barcelona.

Benjamin Thompson – Custom Games Manager of Winning Moves

Winning Moves is the company that makes the international family favourite board game – MONOPOLY which is currently sold in 111 countries around the world. This timeless classic has been recreated in the form of a brand new Edinburgh edition, which was launched at the end of 2018. The new board includes favourites of both locals and visitors to the city alike, including Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Zoo, not forgetting our very own Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian.

TALES & STORIES

&A DUNDEE

Scotland’s first design museum, V&A Dundee, opened its doors at the end of 2018, with over 27,000 people visiting during the opening week. An international centre of design, V&A Dundee aims to showcase the best of Scottish creativity from around the world and has quickly become a must-visit destination for locals and visitors to Scotland.

Designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who was inspired by the sublime geology of Scotland’s northern coastline, the museum appears to cut through the water of the River Tay like the prow of a boat. Stepping inside, visitors are met with beautiful, light-filled interiors which display the exhibitions and architecture perfectly.

The only V&A museum outside of London, V&A Dundee offers an escape into the world of art, inspiration and discovery, no matter what age you are. From design challenge workshops through to

V Young People’s Collective tours; Tea Room Tales for those under five; Introduction to Design Thinking workshops; and a range of engaging exhibitions including Ocean Liners: Speed and Style.

At the heart of the museum lies the Scottish Design Galleries. Featuring 300 exhibits drawn from the V&A’s rich collections of Scottish design, alongside assets from museums and private collections, it includes the meticulously restored Charles Rennie Mackintosh Oak Room, previously lost to view for almost 50 years.

A number of major exhibitions are complemented by new commissions and installations designed by everyone, from local artists through to former Turner Prize nominees such as Cara Phillips.

The museum is centrepiece to a £1 billion transformation of Dundee’s waterfront, find out more about the V&A Dundee by visiting www.vam.ac.uk/dundee.

Laurence Winram is a Scottish photographer based in Edinburgh. His time is split between commercial and fine art photography. His most personally revealing works are those in his Conemen and Mythoslogos projects. The main focus of these is informed by his perception of the world as a truly mythic and interconnected place.

About Mythoslogos: The ancient Greeks made sense of their world not only by logic but by myth too. They saw it was necessary to view things in these opposite ways in order to have a balanced understanding of their lives.

“ I feel we have moved out of that balance, unconsciously letting go of that mythic element to our lives. As a result we’ve lost touch with our own personal vision and creativity. We let a dogmatic scientific perspective rule everything, from our dreams to our notions of the spiritual. So in this series I try to reflect on this, creating images that sometimes imagine a world where logic has been usurped by the mythic, or images that mock our need to analyse and break down those parts of our life that we should truly respond to more intuitively.” Laurence Winram

Before Edison died he was working on designs for a machine to communicate with the dead. This is Laurence’s interpretation of this machine in action. Laurence shot the Otto photographs on

the banks of Loch Ness. He made the wings himself over a week in a cottage on the beautiful isle of Lewis.
