'!vasestablished. When Gensuikyodivided into factions resulting from conflictsover the U. S.-Japan Security Treaty and the resumPtionof nu-clear testing by the Soviet Union, many citizensof Hiroshima werediscouraged and silent. But in August, 1966' their hopcs wcrctekindled by an NHK-Hiroshima television program which at-tempted to answermany simplequestionsabout theA-Bomb explo-sion. How many people were n the hypocentelarea at the time ofthe explosion? Where were they from ? What kind of work didthey do ? What kind of buildings were there ? Growing out ofthis program, elevision.iournalists, cientists t the Researchnstr-tute for Nuciear Medicine and Biology of Hiroshima University, and a largc.nurnbelof ordin:rr;,citizens, binccl n ir rnovelncnt orecover nformation about and to reproduceon a scalemodel thehypocenter area. The movement would also make an appeal forpeacebased n the survivors' xperiencesf the first A-Bomb explo-sion n history. The City of Hiroshima took over this movementand prepareda report o thc United Nationsaspart of the activiticsof the 30th anniversaryyear. Even aftel careful investigation, lrecstimateof 240,000 asualtiesrom the A-Bomb is not considercdreliable.Lastyear he movement f "Picturesabout heA-Bomb Drarvnby HiroshimaCitizens"was riggcrecl y a singledrawing broughtto NHK-Hiroshima and the enthusiasm f Hiroshima'spcoplc. This is a new civic movementnot seen ince he novement o repli-cate the hypocenterarea. When I stood up in a franticeffort to look around there wasdarkness. Ter-ribly frightened I thought I was alone in aworld of death and groped for any light. Myfear was so great I did not think anyone wouldtruly understand. When I came to my sensesI found my clothes n shredsand I was withoutmy "geta" (wooden sandals).3. Suddenly I wondered what had happenedto my mother and sister. My mother was then45 and my sister 5 yearsold. When the dark-ness began to fade I found that there wasnothing around me. My house, the nextdoorneighbor's house, and the next had all van-ished. I was standing amid the ruins of myhouse. No one was arount l . l t was qu ie t .very quiet, an eerie moment. We were on our way home. We werewalking along the streetcar line at the foot ofHijiyama. Wherever we went we saw deadhorsesand bodies lying here and there. Theremaining fires were giving off a lot of smoke. Not a soul was in sight. It was when I crossedMiyuki Bridge that I saw ProfessorTakenakastanding at the foot of the bridge. He wasalmost naked, wearing nothing but shorts, andhe had a rice ball in his right hand. Beyondthe streetcar ine, the northern area was coveredby red fire brirnir-rgagainst the sky. Far awayfrom the line, Ote-machi was also a sea of fire.

That dav Professor Takenaka had notgone o Hiroshima Universityand the A-f iombexploded when he was at home, He tried torescuehis wife who was trapped under a roof-beam but all his efforts were in vain, Thefire was threatening him also. His wife plead-ed, "Run away, dear !" He was forced todesert his wife and escape rom the fire, Hewas now at the foot of Miyuki Bridge. But I wonder how he came to hold thatrice ball in his hand ? His naked figure, standing there before the flames with that riceball looked to me as a symbol of the modcsthope of human beings,

He looked to be ingreat pain but there was nothing that I coulddo for him.I wonder what became of him. Eventoday, I vividly remembcr the sight. It wassimply miserable.

While fleeing toward Ogawara I stoppedat the auditorium ofFuchu Elementary School.Seeing so many people badly injured and ask-ing for help, I could nothelp crying myself. Itwas terrible to see people with their faces, hands, and legs rio badly swollen. I also feltsigk from inhaling noxious gases. The armyhad no medicine except mercurochrome andit was, at best, a temporary treatment. Evennow I am anxious about what happened tothosepeople, I also had some mercurochromeput on the injury to my face.

uIryWffiWffiIffithe A-Bomb. Since I did not recognize himas my neighbor, I asked who he was. Heanswered hat he was Mr. Sasaki, the son ofMr. Enriosuke Sasaki, who had a lumbershop n Funairi Town. That morning he hadbeendoing volunteer labor serviceevacuatingthe housesnear the Prelectural Office in KakoTown. He had been burned black all overand had startedback to his home in Funairi. He looked miserable burned sore, and nakedwith only piecesofhis gaiters trailing behind ashewalked. Only the part of his hair coveredbv his soldier's hat was left, as if hc was rvear-ing a bowl. When I touchedhim, his burnedskin slipped off. I did not know what to do,so I askeda passingdriver to take him to EbaHospital.Soon afterward, I met the wife of myneighbor who had also been injured by theA-Bomb. Although her husbandand I tricdtohelpher shedied on rheway to Eba Hospital.

Another neighbor could not walk becauseherlegs were wounded and looked like pomegran-ates.Wehad to take her to the hospitalby hold-ing her under her arms. The hospital roomwas full of wounded people. Theie I foundMr. Sasaki whom I had met that morning. His entire body, except for hrs eyes, wascovered n'ith bandages. Sometime later Imet his mother who wasverv grateful to me fcrrhaving helped her son. But she told me hehad died just after noon. I was very sorry tohear this.I left the hospital and went across theriver near the Hiroshima Commercial HighSchool with my neighbors. I walked towardsItsukaichi Town where there was a shelter andarrived at the Itsukaichi Town Office in the.evening.Every year, August 6, I remember the timeof the A-Bomb explosion. I can never forgetthe tenor and horror of the Atomic Bomb.

This book contains 104 pictures of a total of 975 collectedduring two months rom June to August 1974 n responseo anNHI( television ppealentitled "Let us Leave or Posterity icturesabout the Atomic-BombDrawn by Citizens". None of thesepic-tures was drawn by a professionalartist. They were done by oldpcople such as thosewe passby in the city of Hiroshima and sitnext to on the bus. N{ost of them had never drawn a picture sincetheir graduation from elementaryschool. In the pictures thepersonal experiencesof the Atomic Bomb are shown. They arenot merely the records and materiah of that day thirty yearsago.Rather, eachpictureechoeshe heartfeltcry of someonewho hasbccn enduring sorrow and sullering for thirty yearssince he day theAtomic Bomb wasdropped. It Started frorn a Sing1e Picture

One day in May, 1974Mr. Iwakichi Kobayashi,an old manof 77 wearinggeta, visited he NHK studio n Hiroshima He ha.da singlepicture rvith him and said that the T. V. drama "Hatokono Umi," then on the air, remindedhim of the Atomic Bomb explo-sion. He showedus his picture titled "At about 4 P M., August6, 1945,nearYorozuyoBridge". In the simplyand vividly drawnpicture were countlessnumbers of people su'ffering rom burns andihirsting for water. There was also a figure of a young ladycoveredwith a burned sheetof tin-roofing lying on the river bank.Mr. Kobayashiexplained hat he wasat the railway stationwhenthe Atomic Bomb exploded. He was ooking for his only son whenhe witnessedhe scenehe had drawn. Usually we think of theYorozuyo Bridge as an ordinary bridge we cross and we do notpay any attention to it becauseHiroshima has many.riverswithiimilar bridges.. So we were awed by the extraordinary power ofNtr. Kobayashi's picture and by the vividnessof his memory evenafter almost thirty years. How different this was from understand-ing the Atomic Bomb experienceby reading a story. The pictureappealed irectly o our senses.Mr' Kobayashi aid o us, "Evennow I can not erase he scene rom my memory. Before my deathI wanted to draw it and leave t lor others." Having heard hiswordswe made up our minds to ask he peoplewho experienced heAtomic Bomb o draw pictures f what theyremembered n thatday

The Message the Pictures Wish to ConveyThe Assembly Hall used lor the exhibition should have becntwice the size originally planned for, So many pictures were sentin and even during the exhibit ion many more pictures arrived. Anumber of pictures were drawn at the Assembly Hall. The plann-ed space was entirely f i l led, and later the walls were fi l led lromfloor to t ei ling. While we watched people continue to bring in pictures duringthe filming of the television program about the A-Bomb, \,vewon-dered why so many pictures were drawn in spite of their crudetechniques. Then wc realized that many explanationson the pic-tures ended with the words "gashoo" or "gashoonembutsu" mean-ing praying hands or lolded hands in prayer lor the dead. "I amnot good at paint ing. I am very sorry that I couldn't make a prc-ture scroll which would really tel l you of the experience hat I hadat that t ime. However, today I drew a picture and wrote an ex-planation while in lront of a Buddhist altar", Mrs. Kinu Kusataexplained on her picture. The pictures convey wltat the survivors would l ike, known thatin drawing the picture it led them to make amends individuallylor the people who died that day and to relieve the anguish of theirsouls. This was related to the posit ive wish that others shouldundclstand the truth ot ' that day. As N,Irs. I 'suneyo Masada, agc75, explained ol the many blameless people who wanted water, writhed in agony, and died, "I'm an old woman and not good atwrit ing and drawing but in spite of that I was struck with the ideaofdrawing a picture and rvrit ing an explanation so that many peoplecan understand my experience." Many pictures were drawn by

people in their sickbeds. IVIrs.Katsu Kawano, age 82, drew fivepictures with her palsied hands. "I drew a picture with my dis-abled hands. The scene shows only a part of the misery in rnymind lrom the actual experience." When we went to interuewMrs. Hamano Matsushita about the explanation of her picturcsshe was seated in her work room and said with great ir i i tatron,"This picture could not possibly tel l you all my experiences.Even if I drew one hundred pictr-rres,hey could not tel l you of mycxperiences " As they drew their pictures, the suffererswere im-patient and dissatisf ied because hey could not express heir realfeelings. Drawing reminded them of their painful experiencesof30 years ago. "My hands are tremblins and my heart throbs asI think of how I should explain the reality of that situation so that

you can really understand," said Mrs. Michiyo Azuma, age 68.While we collected information from the survivorswe were deeplyimpressedby each of their pictures. These pictures cried directlyto each viewer of the pain and destruction suffered. They did sonot because l thei r artistry but because f the emotionsexpressed. Conclusion"Thesepictures repoor n quality fyoujudge thern or artisticquality and techniques. We don't want you to see hem as exhi-bits in a museum. We want to tell you that these hings actuallyhappened, hat people eally died in terrible pain." So wrote 59year old Mr. Kazuo Kambara.During the short time in which thesepictures were drawn thespreadofnuclear weaponshas accelerated. Nuclear testshavebeenmade in many countries of the world including India, which re-cently conducted ts fiIst nuclear test. But through the picturesofthe A-Bomb sufferers, outsiders can be opened to the long closedrvorld of the first victims of nuclearwar and learn that thesepicturescondemn the folly of nations blindly pursuing a nuclear arms race.Thesepictures should not be ignored. They will be valuable onlywhen widely shown to people who do not fully understand theAtomic Bomb. We hope that you will grasp the heartfelt cries ofcvery picture Ibr they are truly the starting point of an appeal forPeace..We started to receive pictures again beginning this April,1975. We received300 more picturesby the end of May andwhile we were preparing his bookmany morc pictureswere beingdrawn. Mr. YoshioHamada (p. 101)sentus ivepictures hisyearalthough he is still bedridden. Mrs. Haruko Ogasawara p.43)alsosent us 5omepictures. She wrote, "Someofthe A-Bomb suf-ferersare still ill from ladiation sickness. I drew pictures again thisyear because want to keephanding down that horrible scene fthe A-Bombed city wl.rich will remain in my memory as long as Ilive."For one year, startingwith the picture drawn by Mr. IwakichiI{obayashi we have continucd collecting data for our televisronprogram. We have been encouraged by the many pictures sentto us and are very sorry that we cannot show you all of them. Wetoo want to pray for th great number of peoplewho died on thatday. We express ur deepappreciation o thosewho drewpicturesand encour:rgedus.
