Old Testament Unit 2: Noah Lesson 4: The Tower of Babel Unfolding God’s Story for Teachers It really starts quite innocently. A person finishes college or trade school, gets a job, marries, and starts a family. Then without realizing it, he or she is chasing the “American dream.” This may involve a prestigious career, having a large bank account to cover any want or need, or obtaining some other means of financial or emotional “security.” Being an American offers many great advantages and opportunities. We are a truly blessed nation. Yet, even though we might not think we are getting caught up in these opportunities, we can get drawn in and make the same fatal error made by the people in this week’s Bible story. Please read Genesis 11:1-9. Having goals and dreams isn’t wrong, but engaging in an unbridled pursuit of them is idolatry. At the time of our story, the survivors of the flood and their descendants had one common language. This band of people had moved south from Mt. Ararat and then slightly eastward and settled in the region of Mesopotamia in a plain called Shinar. We do not know if all of humanity was involved in this building project or not, but the outcome certainly affected everyone. The Bible tells us they desired to build a tower to the sky to make a name for themselves. By drawing people to the tower, they would be unified in strength. So what is wrong with a plan to pursue unity and strength? If God is not part of the plan, a very great deal! Somehow, from the point at which the small band left the ark to the time of our story, people forgot God’s plan for them to “increase in number and fill the earth.” They had certainly fulfilled the “increase in number” part, but they were staying together. They were becoming independent of God. It is clear that the tower represented an effort to say, “We can take care of ourselves!” People were engaging in both pride and idolatry. God knew the intent of their hearts and the capacity of their imaginations. God did not want a repeat of the pre-flood society, so He saved the people from themselves by confusing their language. The scene would have been interesting if not comical to observe. A worker asks for a tool and gets a brick. Measurements would be amiss. One might wonder if God smiled as He observed the chaos, but He knew this was a serious situation and that consequences would be even more serious if He did not intervene. God accomplished His purpose, as always, and the tower plan was abandoned. Common language groups were formed and the people scattered all over the earth. The many languages spoken today attest to this incident. God wants us to have dreams, hopes, and ambitions; but even more, He wants us to love Him with all our hearts, minds, and strength. We must never divorce our ambitions from God. David wrote, “Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you your heart’s desires” (Ps. 37:4). Doing what pleases God is always the best plan. Arrival Greet children at eye level and express how happy you are to see them. Be sure each child has a name tag and the security measures of your church are followed. Label all coats and personal belongings. Strongly encourage children who have brought items from home, such as toys and books, to place them on a shelf while they are working with other materials. Assure children their items will be safe and they can take them home at the end of the session. Help each child make a choice where he or she would like to begin his or her Center Time. Lesson Plan Bible Story: The Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) Bible Phrase: “Do those things that are pleasing to God” (1 John 3:22). Bible Truth: God wants me to please Him in all I do.
