» 1948 - Becomes the organization’s first decentralized Office in Asia.

» 1967- Becomes the Regional Office of Science and Technology for South and Central Asia (ROSTCA).

» 1993 - Becomes a platform for delivery in all areas of UNESCO’s competence.

» 2001- Becomes the Cluster Office for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

» 2009- Signs the Host Country Agreement.

» 2016- Moves to its new premises donated by the Government of India, at 1 San Martin Marg, Chanakyapuri.

UNESCO seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, the sciences, culture and communications. UNESCO’s programmes contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals as defined in Agenda 2030.

Sustainable Development begins with Education

The New Delhi Office collaborates across the sub-region with ministries and departments of education, training institutions, civil society, other United Nations agencies and academia in developing policy and programmes to create equitable access for men, women and children to affordable and quality-assured education and lifelong learning opportunities.

UNESCO believes that education is a human right for all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality.

Leading Education2030

Through a combination of research, technical assistance, capacity building, and material/curriculum development, the Education Sector strengthens Member States’ efforts in accelerating progress towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

It supports Member States towards:

» Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 by 2030 and facilitate cross-national collaboration and policy discussions for the effective implementation of the Agenda.

» Ensuring that education policies, programmes and practices promote the development of inclusive education systems.

» Designing and implementing effective, evidence-based Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in education policies and national plans.

» Reviewing strategies and policies in order to improve equitable access to quality higher education and enhance mobility and accountability.

» Strengthening the Education team’s response to health and well-being of adolescents and young people.

Science for a Sustainable Future

The New Delhi office supports 15 Biosphere Reserves in the sub-region as demonstration sites for sustainable development and assists in capacity building for integrated management of landscapes and water resources.

As a fundamental factor in sustainability, it supports sub-regional capacity for Science, Technology and Innovation, with particular emphasis on harnessing the potential of girls and women in science.

UNESCO assists countries to invest in knowledge and understanding through science, to address the economic, social and environmental needs facing humanity.

Fostering Science as a Pillar of Sustainable Development

Science is the main driver of change throughout human development. The overarching objective of the Science Team is to mobilise scientific knowledge for sustainable development through:

» Leveraging scientific knowledge for the benefit of the environment and the sustainable management of natural resources.

» Advancing cooperation through its global science networks in Hydrology, Man and Biosphere, Geosciences and Basic Sciences.

» Contributing to disaster preparedness and adaptation to climate change.

» Strengthening science and innovation systems for sustainable development, poverty eradication and a culture of peace and non-violence.

As a catalyst for peace and social development, UNESCO New Delhi promotes the practice of physical education and sport as a fundamental right for all without discrimination based on gender or disability.

The Internal Migration in India Initiative supports inclusion of migrants in economic, social, political and cultural life, through research, policy and advocacy.

The main objective of the activities of the Social and Human Sciences Team is to support Member States in their efforts towards creating more inclusive, just and sustainable societies. The strategy involves:

Heritage and Creativity

In a time of unprecedented economic and social change, UNESCO's mandate is to ensure that diverse histories, cultures and habitats are not only preserved, but also filled with renewed relevance for future generations.

The New Delhi Office provides technical support to Governments in the sub-region for the management of World Heritage Sites, and for the safeguarding and promotion of traditional and contemporary expressions of culture both in rural and urban areas.

To ensure that culture takes its rightful place in development strategies and processes, the Culture team adopts a three-pronged approach:

» Spearheading advocacy for culture and development, while engaging with the stakeholders to set clear policies and legal frameworks.

» Strengthening creative industries and encouraging cultural pluralism.

Free Flow of Ideas by Word and Image

The New Delhi office promotes freedom of expression, media development, and access to information and knowledge with a view to building peaceful and inclusive societies.

It also works to safeguard journalistic freedom and safety and promotes Information and Communication Technologies for achieving universal access to information and knowledge. UNESCO is the only United Nations agency mandated to promote the free flow of ideas by word or image.

UNESCO promotes the exchange of knowledge among peoples through all means of mass communication.

Fostering Freedom of Expression & Access to Information & Knowledge

At UNESCO, we help build peace by promoting a pluralistic and diverse media that allows citizens to make well-informed choices. We also believe in harnessing the power of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to build inclusive knowledge societies. The four areas of work of the Communication and Information team are:

» Promoting freedom of expression and the safety of journalists.

» Promoting the participation of women and youth in development through the media.

» Enabling the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for access to information and knowledge.

» Preserving documentary heritage.
