Recent News & Plans

! Full MIMO Certification is Available " For Silicon & Systems

! Add New Accredited Test Labs as of 1H 2014 " RFP out for responses and evaluations " China, Taiwan, Others?

! BBF Submission for PLC Comparison Testing " Establish a set of tests that are

- Repeatable anywhere - Representative of Operator needs, not corner cases or any technology-specific set ups to gain anyone an advantage

" Brought into BBF as we want this to be an Industry effort, not dominated by any one group or any one agenda

What’s MIMO for wires?

! SISO = Single Path (Single Input, Single Output) ! MIMO = Multi-path (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) ! Over Powerlines, when there are three-wire circuits ! Boosts Performance ! Nominal Cost increase for 2 paths versus one ! G.hn standard since 2012, now in our testing program

" Means Guaranteed IOP, multi-source, top quality

HGF Specifications

! ITU-T standards define Layer 2 properties and functionalities " Need other aspects specified for a technology to be

successful ! Examples, based on Service Provider requests

" Pairing – ability to use push buttons to start or add to networks

" Neighboring Networks (NDIM) - enhancements " TR-069 – developing full diagnostics for G.hn

! There are many such cases ! HGF defines Specifications and Best Practices for

Developers and Operators to ensure compliance, interoperability, and successful network roll outs

April 2014: Field Trials & Deployments

! There are many field trials, and even deployments in the pipeline " But, we (and vendors) are under confidentiality rules, as

many Operators want to promote their service, not the technology, and do not wish to disclose until they have full service roll out

" The following have made public statements - Portugal Telecom – coax and PLC, just issued an RFP - Telefonica (in the 17 countries they operate in) – coax and PLC - China Telecom – PLC, trials completed, publicly announced and crafting a China standard to mandate G.hn as home network technology

- Chunghwa Telecom – PLC, announced June 2013

Inter-subscriber Interference over PLC

IP Possibilities April 2014

! PLC home networks "  In general, powerline networks in

SFUs are free from inter-subscriber interference

"  A powerline network will not receive interference from an apartment in a building across the street, but…

"  It may receive interference from another unit in the same building

! When PLC networks interfere with each other "  Best case: network capacity is

shared "  Worst case: devices try to

transmit at the same time, causing collisions

Inter-subs interference over shared power wires

Comparing Mitigation Techniques

What HomePlug AV, 1901, AV2 G.hn Mitigation: network or node By network only By node and by network Need Powerline filters at breaker panels Yes, cost ~$100 plus electrician No

Reduce signal power levels in network Network-wide Determined by node, not

network

Share wire in CSMA mode Reduces throughput, more collisions mean lower efficiency Not needed

Take turns on the wire By network, total throughput is same as one network

Only under extreme situations, not needed for over 99% of interference

Orthogonal Preambles Don’t have IP developed for G.hn exclusively, eliminates over 85-90% of instances

Coordination between networks on per node basis Don’t have For Spatial Reuse

Bottom Line DOES NOT WORK! Works Great, Resolves the Problem

Oh, and about 1905.1…

! 1905.1 defines how multiple networks in the home can act as a single network

! First version was limited to a few technologies and was a more of proof of concept, now IEEE has a new project – 1905.1a "  First 1905.1a meeting 25-27 February 2014. Tele-conf. since "  HGF and several HGF members participated. HGF members believe it is

beneficial to Operators to have IEEE 1905.1a across all home networks. HGF actively support efforts to modify 1905.1 to achieve this

"  HGF is pleased with the progress already, but recognize there is considerable work still to be done, and look forward to continuing to work in IEEE to complete the effort

"  HGF would like to thank all who helped make this initial meeting a success and who are working hard to take 1905.1a from its concept stage to full reality and to be a tool for Operators to have anywhere they deploy home networks

Wireline Mediums Same Silicon, Same SW, Same Best in Class Performance

Medium   Baseband  or  RF   Notes/Modes

Powerline   Baseband   Low  Complexity  Profile  (LCP)  mode  to  25  MHz,  50  MHz  mode,  and  100  MHz  mode.  Supports  both  SISO  and  MIMO  modes.  See  note  1

Copper  Pairs/Phoneline   Baseband   50  MHz  and  100  MHz  modes,  can  support  MIMO  modes

Coax   Baseband   50  MHz  and  100  MHz  modes.  See  note  2

Coax   RF   50  MHz,  100  MHz,  and  200  MHz  wide  bands  within  the  300  MHz  to  3  GHz  frequency  range.  See  note  3

PlasMc  OpMcal  Fiber  (POF)  or  standard  fiber   Baseband   100  MHz  and  200  MHz  modes.  See  note  4

Notes:  1. Powerline  100  MHz  mode  is  notched  above  80  MHz  to  avoid  FM  interference  2. Coax  Baseband  configuraGon  is  for  when  the  coax  has  no  services  operaGng  below  100  MHz  3. Coax  RF  is  for  use  when  other  services  are  resident  on  the  coax  in  RF  mode  and  Baseband  is  not  an  opGon  4. POF  support  added  to  G.hn  in  Annex  F,  follows  same  OFDM  parameters  as  coax

It’s not just Networks, it’s Economics!

! G.hn silicon is the same, regardless of medium ! Simple economics

" For example, sold in a year - 20 million powerline modems, 10 million coax modems and 5 million phoneline modems… a total of 35 million of the same chips, so volume fosters competition and drives price improvements and robust innovation to meet your needs

! Vendors Design Once, Sell Many " System company makes a coax modem for Operator A,

takes the same design , software, and chips and makes a powerline modem for Operator B with just the medium interface components changed… reduces Engineering and development, translates into lower costs overall

! And… G.hn is designed for CSI

How does G.hn stack up versus others?

IP Possibilities April 2014

Real World: 144 socket pairs used in various homes, about 10K tests Same socket pairs used per test for both technologies No extraordinary noise injected The Graph shows probability of coverage of % of sockets At 95%... G.hn is at 20-30 Mbps more than the others, who may not connect

What does all this mean to Operators?

! G.hn was defined in the ITU by Operators, for Operators, Retail is secondary (but coming)

! G.hn is designed to outperform others, especially in the trouble spots where other technologies may not even work

! It is multi-source up front, a robust market exists from the start, Operators free to pick and choose " And with HGF Certification you know different vendors’

systems work great together – No Surprises! " G.hn – It Just Works

! HomePNA is a great technology, continue to use it, we fully support it " There’s a well laid out path to G.hn for HPNA

- http://www.homegridforum.org/uploads/resources/5HYn/hKg8.pdf ! G.hn is rock solid spec and technology ! Require HGF Certified Silicon and Systems

" Reduce costs and time to market " Have high confidence in your G.hn networks

! Plenty of choices, pick your best partners ! Operators can join HGF at no fee ! We host Operator information calls and want to help
