Part 1
Objectives• To broaden and deepen QAs’ understanding of the Intercultural Development Continuum
(IDC) in order to more effectively apply the descriptive and prescriptive components of the IDC
• To provide a broad range of examples, scenarios and situations to better understand the
application of the IDC
• To familiarize QAs with available resources related to the IDC

Pedagogical Pillars / Foundational Concepts• Culture in the context of the IDC/IDI is defined as shared patterns. Patterns of experience, interpretation,
behavior, values, etc.
• The culture-general framework of the IDC allows for the broadest possible application of the IDI and the
inherent culture-specific goals and challenges confronting the client.
• Competency within any discipline generally increases with greater capacity to navigate more complexity
within said discipline. (Examples to be used; math, language, engineering, etc.)
• The Developmental Orientation represents the primary and most adaptive way the client can engage
differences
• Intercultural development is goal-directed03

Mindset Skillset
Mindset generally refers to your unique lens on the world through which you experience
and navigate life, a state of mind based on what you observe, think and believe.
Skillset is something you can
be taught or trained in.
Mindset consistently ranks higher than
skillset in surveys of employers (global).
In the context of the IDC/IDI,
culture is defined as shared
patterns. Patterns of experience,
interpretation, behavior, values,
etc.

The Iceberg of
DifferencesPeople tend to focus on visible
traits of diversity, represented as
those above the waterline. As
they develop more complexity in
their understanding they begin
to see, understand, and value
traits that are less visible (those
under the waterline).

• One-on-one interpersonal situations
• Group/Team dynamic
• Policy and practice audit of impact on
specific populations
• In IDI Guided Development, similar IDI
profiles could mean vastly different goals
based on the context. (Example; Person A /
Person B both engage differences in ways
that minimize their importance. However,
Person A is focused on _____, while Person B
is focused on _____ based on their very
different experiences and contexts)

The Developmental Orientation represents the primary and most adaptive way
the client can engage cultural differences and commonalities
• Descriptive - describing or classifying in an objective and nonjudgmental way
(Oxford dictionary, 2021)
• Prescriptive - giving exact rules, directions, or instructions about how you
should do something (Merriam-Webster, 2021)

Intercultural Development Continuum
The Developmental Orientation represents the primary and most adaptive way
the client can engage cultural differences and commonalities
Descriptive
• The IDC helps understand how differences are being experienced and
engaged by an individual or group.
⚬ If Polarization is defined as, an evaluative mindset that views cultural
differences from an "us and them" perspective using stereotypes and over-
generalizations as their primary source of engagement – then this is how a
Polarization mindset primarily engages differences

Prescriptive
• The IDC helps understand how to increase capacity with a targeted learning
focus.
⚬ The developmental intervention for Polarization includes decreasing
judgment based on stereotypes or overgeneralizations while increasing
awareness and focus on areas of commonality.
