4SEMESTER IIIFARMHOUSE RESIDENTIAL

NEROBEN HOUSECHHATTARPUR, NEW DELHI

(From left)Siteplan, Ground Floor Plan and Ter-race Plan with Sci-ography

We were given a real site and a real client for this studio exercise. The site picked was in Chat-tarpur, New Delhi. The client, Mr. Francis, a product designer with a family of three, wanted a modest farmhouse that was designed for actual cultivation to take place on the site. The Francis family rarely had guests over, and hence the house designed for them contains spaces oriented towards private fami-ly time. Several private pockets have been provided in this design--such as a the waterfall cave--allowing various members of the family to relax and contem-plate. Since cooking was an activity enjoyed by all the members of the family together, the kitchen was treated as a common living space and given a prime location. A Baoli (traditional Indian step well) was provided right at the centre in order to both provide natural relief and be environmentally responsible. Irrigation channels were designed to wrap around the house and permeate the rest of the site.

6SEMESTER VII RESIDENTIALROW AND CLUSTER HOUSING DONE IN GROUPS OF 3 (WITH MAHAJAN AND KAIRAMKONDA)

HOUSING EXPERIMENTS In this semester, as a precursor to the final design project (social housing for a utopian society), we experimented with hypotheti-cal housing forms for different typologies. We were assigned a total site area for the different projects, after which we designed multiple configurations that fit an optimum number of units effi-ciently.

The different typologies that explored in this assignment were: townhouses, row housing, cluster housing, walkup apartments and high rise housing (upto 30 floors). The focus of the exercise was to faciliate accommodation with associated facilities (such as parks, a community centre and a school). This required a thorough un-derstanding of Clarence Perry’s neighbourhood unit theory, and the local building codes.

ECOTECT ANALYSISDESIGN STRATEGY

SUN PATH DIAGRAM

PROPOSED

This exercise was conducted with exchange students from Erfurt University, Germany. The objective was to under-stand the relationship of build-ing facade and local climate. Each facade of the existing college building was examined using Ecotect, and redesigned according to orientation. This was done in order to sensitize us to the role building facade plays in creating sustainable structures. Working alongside the exchange students, we de-veloped better team building and interpersonal skills.

SOUTH FACADEThe Ecotect analysis we conducted showed us that the southern facade of a building needs to be tackled with extra care due to maximum thermal gain. Hence photosensi-tive mechanical screens were designed to shade the facade when needed. The ex-ternal wall was cladded with a glass struc-ture that captured light, heated air and hence forced natural air to move through the building--hence cooling it.

8SEMESTER V COMMERCIALIP THERMAL POWER PLANT REVITALISATION

INDERPRASTHA GREEN SCIENCE CENTREINDERPRASTHA THERMAL POWER PLANT, NEW DELHI

In this exercise I studied the process of building transformation and site rejuvenation. The ruins of the IP thermal power plant were revitalized in this exercise. Since the plant shut down due to it not satisfying environ-mental norms in 2003, reusing it for the propogation of green science study in 2014 seemed only fitting to me. Hence I designed the IP Green Science Centre within the context of the IP factory building. The box like form was broken into two parts, with a delicate core in the centre. Lifht was allowed to enter into the previously dark, monolith structure. All the steel floor plates and columns removed were reused, along with the ex-isting space truss (now fitted with solar panels).

SEMESTER V INSTITUTIONALPOLICE STATION

POLICE STATIONC.R. PARK, NEW DELHI

While complete visual and experiential access is granted to the user, the authority of the po-lice isn’t comprised in the physical expression of the form. It is in enforced by introducing an upward dynamism to the form. no restrictive boundary condition

conceptual visualization

Fundamental to a public institution like the police force, is the provision of complete transparency to the gen-eral public in its function. Having rec-ognized absolute trust as a key tenet of the police force, I decided to pursue transparency in the physical expres-sion of the station itself. When I studied the public domain in New Delhi’s architectural space, I noticed the ubiquity of the exclusion-ary boundary wall. This became the starting point for my design process-I countered the wall by evolving a form that provided visual access from the street and was still impenetrable to unwanted forces. The physical transparency of the building’s skin was complemented by its experiential transparency as well. The staggered vertical hierarchy of the form further emboldened the physical form. The station hence finds itself completely exposed to its neigh-bouring context while the barracks and the residential area of the station resonate the spirit of the neighbouring houses in form and facade

CONCEPTUAL FORM DEVELOPMENT

IIPA is a premier public policy school for public administration stud-ies and one of the major social science resources in India. Un-known to many, it houses Asia’s largest library of social sciences. Due to changing building byelaws and an outdated campus, a need was seen to develop the area. This was to be done in such a manner that it acti-vated the site and its context. Importance was given to the manner in which people reached the site, the image the office building granted to IIPA and its general recognition as an icon in the area. Present day issues of a fragmentedzoning, congested entry and a diminished impact on and pronounced alientation from context were addressed by de-sign.

This exercise was a lesson in image building. We also made extensive use of our understanding and passive energy technologies to reduce the building’s carbon foot print.

I am currently in the process of preparing a full set of construction drawings for two proj-ects that I undertook in third year as a part of my architectural cur-riculum. This includes regular site visits and a deep understanding of the inner workings of a building.

SPACE AUDIT, 2014

An audit of the Maharani Bagh hostel complex was conducted along with a team of engi-neers. We conducted surveys and used specialized equip-ments and softwares to cal-culate the net consumption of energy and resources. Further, interventions were proposed to remedy the same.

An audit of the headquarters of the Ministry of Human Re-source and Development was conducted by a select team of students and two architects to analyze the disparity in space distribution and to record the mismanagement of space and facility provided per person.
