Finally, beginning at 5pm, we

are ready to celebrate. Join us

for a great time of fun, games,

food and fellowship. This year

we will have a moon jump, fun

games and a special puppet

show. Everything is free—

Everyone is welcome. We

hope you will make plans to

attend.

Our church wants to make

sure everyone is ready for the

school year. So, on Sunday,

August 22nd, during our wor-

ship service, we have planned a

special back to school blessing

for students, parents, teachers

and others ready to start the

new school year. Pass the

word and we’ll see you there.

You don't want to miss it.

School starts again this

month. There’s only one

way to mark the occasion

at Oak Haven—our second

annual Back to School

Celebration. Saturday, Au-

gust 14, we have a day’s

worth of activities planned

for everyone. Students and

parents alike will appreciate

the opportunities available.

First, make your plans to

give blood. The American

Red Cross will be onsite

taking blood donations. It’s

an easy way to help others,

and it’s not as bad as you

might think. We need at

least 14 people signed up

to make it a success.

Secondly, students can

stop by anytime after 3pm

to receive a free back to

school haircut. Juanita

Juarez has arranged this

activity. She said parents

and teachers can feel free

to stop by as well.

“Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us.” Joshua 24:27

We have some fun tapes that incorporate Latin rhythms and

aerobics and makes it more enjoyable to workout. It’s so much

easier to motivate ourselves if we get our friends involved. So

come join us! Classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at

7 p.m. If you would like more information contact Susan Norris.

We know we are shaping our souls, how about shaping our bodies too?

The Busy Bees The Busy Bees are so busy they have de-

cided to meet twice a month. Those

who first met on July 20th discussed

many ideas and decided to begin work on

a project for this year’s Ham and Bean

Dinner. If you enjoy craft work, or

would like to learn more about it, then

join the Busy Bees. Contact Karen

Everyone is invited to

our monthly Chips, Dips

and Discussion time.

We will gather in the

church meeting room.

Paul Perrin will lead our

discussion. Join us Friday

August 20 at 7:00 pm.

My younger children

and I were walking

through the church

grounds, noticing trash

that needed to be picked

up. I said, “I need to buy

a trash stick.” That’s all

it took. They spent the

rest of our time there

looking for branches to

make their own. Over

the next two days they

expanded their work at

home, using every “tool”

they could to help them

with their project—they

wanted to make sure I

didn’t have to spend

money on a trash stick. Of

course, they saw it as a way

to help Dad. I saw some-

thing else.

God, whom many of us

recognize as our Father,

notices too. What God no-

tices should become our

work. Broken hearts, for-

giveness, lost hope? We’re

on it. There are children to

teach, messages to be told

and a lifetime of discipleship

to share. What needs to be

done? Plenty. All it takes is

a simple look at the world

around us. Younger or not,

that’s our work as God’s

children. We all have been

given a ministry of reconcilia-

tion (2 Corinthians 5:19,20).

My children’s work brought

me joy. I can only imagine

how God views what we do

as Christ’s ambassadors—

when we do it.

Blessed Beyond Belief,

Eucharist:

From the Greek word

eucharistein, meaning “to

give thanks.” This is a term

used for the Lord’s Supper,

or Communion.

Theological Word To Know

All In a Faith’s Work

On Sunday August 1st we are

welcoming Daniel Thueson and

his family ; Daniel is scheduled

to be our guest preacher. He is

a student at Perkins School of

Theology at SMU, Dallas.

The following week Bob

Ramsey is filling the pulpit. His

sermon topic is, “Sin Mainte-

nance.” Bob is a certified lay

speaker in the United Methodist

Church.

Both Daniel and Bob are filling

in for John while he and his fam-

ily are away on vacation. We

hope you will express your ap-

preciation to them.

The children who participated in last month’s Vacation

Bible School raised money (over $180) during the week long

event for the Imagine No Malaria campaign. This is a minis-

try of the “people of The United Methodist Church to elimi-

nate death and suffering from malaria in Africa by 2015. “

There is still time for you to join our children in this great

effort.

Visit imaginenomalaria.org to see how our church is com-

bating this disease. The website offers malaria facts, promo-

tional material and informational videos. If you would like to

give to this effort contact Minnette Puckett.

Many, many thanks to each and

everyone of you who donated toilet-

ries, time and money making our

“Christmas in July” event at Ashford

Hall a big success. Approximately

40 guests were served lemonade

and cookies in the dining room.

Everyone enjoyed Santa’s helpers

(19 in all, and a lot of them were

children). A special thanks goes to

our new Santa, David Triggs; thank

you, David for sweltering in your

suit in 100 degree weather! We

also distributed 100 gift bags with

small toiletries and a fleece prayer

shawl or lap cover.

Remember our ongoing projects:

1) Campbell’s Soup labels to help

buy equipment for Dallas Bethlehem

Center 2) books, puzzles and cur-

rent year magazines for the resi-

dents at Ashford Hall and 3) our

Shoes for School project that helps

purchase shoes and socks for stu-

dents at John R. Goode, Gilbert and Paul

Keyes elementary schools.

We are now taking reservations for our

annual Ladies’ Retreat, to be held at lovely

Bridgeport Lake on Friday October 1

through Saturday October 2. The cost is

$55 per person; this covers the evening

meal on Friday, a bed to sleep on, break-

fast and lunch on Saturday—the fellowship

is free! See Bonnie Perrin or myself to

register or for more information.

Our next unit meeting is scheduled for

Monday, August 9th at 7pm. Please plan

to bring your World Thank Offering

(change banks) to this meeting. We will

send the offering to the district office be-

fore September 1st. I look forward to

seeing you all there!

The United

Methodist Men’s

group met on

Thursday, July

15th. The meet-

ing began with a

prayer, followed

by a delicious

dinner provided by various members of the group. Our finan-

cial budget is steady and the last quarter needs to be updated.

Reverend Fletcher led our devotion; it was based on the con-

cept of the Hebrew word “Chutzpah” (hoots-pah). The word

means to have the will power, drive or determination. The

early church seemed to have this strive, but unfortunately many

of us today lack this kind of faithful persistence.

We also viewed a patriotic video related to a discussion

Paul Perrin led. Steve Perrin and Ricky Campbell helped

with the program.

As a reminder, each month our group collects non-

perishable food items to provide for Irving Cares. Your

participation in that project is greatly appreciated.

Finally, with all the work we have had done to our

church facilities over the last several months, while clean-

ing and reorganizing, the original charter for our group,

dated March 22, 1957, was found. We have placed it in

our church’s heritage cabinet. You’ll notice it; it is still in

its original frame!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, August

19th at 7pm. We hope to se you gentlemen there.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UMNS) — A United Meth-

odist pastor will be the featured speaker on a na-

tionally syndicated radio program. The Rev. Charles

D. Reeb, senior pastor of Pasadena Community

Church in St. Petersburg, Fla., can be heard on Aug.

8 and 15 on “Day 1,” an ecumenical radio program

produced by the Alliance for Christian Media. His

sermons on the radio programs will focus on He-

brews 11 and 12. The program can be heard

at day1.org.

AUSTIN, Texas (UMNS) — I am often appalled at the power that we Americans give to scien-

tists and engineers, writes the Rev. Tina Carter, an ordained United Methodist elder who

holds a doctorate in environmental chemistry. With our increased demand and consumption

of oil, with our increased demand for money and the greed that pervades our culture, and with

the expectation of instant results born of the very technology that scientists and engineers

have given us come no room for error and no offer of grace. The people who were on the

drill rig when the oil spill happened in the Gulf of Mexico and those who have sought a solu-

tion to this incredible error in judgment are nothing more and nothing less than children of

God. Lacking godlike qualities, they are thinking and testing everything that they know to do.

Oil spill teaches us scientists are not gods

NEW YORK (UMNS) — So many United Methodist Volunteer in Mission teams are signing up for

work in Haiti that a request already has been made for 2012. Through its Haiti Response Plan, the

church is rotating teams into the country to assist with earthquake recovery. “I’ve got weeks that

are too full,” said Susan Meister, the U.S.-based coordinator. “The response has just been tremen-

dous.” Space remains for additional teams this year, she added. So far, 107 teams, including ecu-

menical teams, have been scheduled for 2010.

WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- United

the campaign, which is an effort to

of the denomination’s strategy to com-

Coast will fall on Aug. 29, a Sunday this year. Mississippi Area Bishop Hope Morgan Ward in-

vites churches to pray for those affected by the hurricane. In mid-August, the Mississippi An-

nual (regional) Conference will post worship ideas and resources to mark the occasion at

We are giving every

effort to update our list.

If your name should be

here, please let us know.

If you know of a name

we have missed please

contact Minnette

Puckett or John Fletcher.

A Pastor Can Wish, Right? Our church just recently participated in the UMW’s Christmas in July event at Ash-

ford Hall. That got me thinking about Christmas, and Christmas lists. So, I thought I

would share your pastor’s “Christmas” Wish List. I’ve read somewhere, “You don’t

have because you don’t ask.”

Got your copy? Enroll Now

• Church photographer (A designated person to take plenty of pic-

tures (video?) for all church functions)

• New church office computer (An updated system to do church work.)

• Elevator (Many of our members find it extremely

difficult to get upstairs)

• Choir director

• 10-15 new TFWS songbooks (It seems we’re a few short)

• Children’s Sunday School assistants (Mary Lou would appreciate you)

• New playground (Wouldn’t that say, “We would love to have

your children here.”)

• New Church directory (Is it time? It’s been 7 years)

• You go to a Walk to Emmaus (Yes, you!)

• Baptismal Font

• Children/Youth Coordinator

• The bishop to visit our church (He just needs to taste our hams.)

• A new bridge (To cross the creek to the smoker.)

• Chrismons (For our church Christmas tree)

• New computers for the children’s

computer room • Advent Candle holder • Homebound Communion Team (An important ministry to have) • Updated historical review of Oak Haven

Beginning this month our church office will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am-2pm. It’s important for a church to be open, to have someone available for church members. Stephen Cooper has volunteered for this position. Stop by and say hello, have a cup of coffee, make copies or for any other reason. We’re here for you!

How much money would some of these things cost, and where would we get it? I’m

not sure, but that’s why they call it a wish list. What would you add to my list?

Visit our guest station to pick up a copy of Oak Haven’s brochure. It’s a simple pamphlet that in-cludes our vision statement, ba-sic information about the church and an invitation to be a part of any of our activities. Leave one with a friend who is considering visiting, or who might just need that last invite.

In this month’s newsletter you will find two forms for your use. One is for Kroger’s Neighbor to Neighbor program and the other from Tom Thumb’s Good Neighbor program. Enrolling in these programs allows our church to benefit from your purchases. Oak Haven receives a contribution every quarter from your enroll-ment. If you have any questions please contact Minnette Puckett for information.
