India wanted to go into the series final with a thumping win against Bangladesh. And Virat Kohli (102*) ensured just that, guiding India to a convinc- ing six-wicket victory with a sparkling century.Set a target of 248, India finished with 249 for 4 in 43 overs. The perfectly placed flicks and immaculately-timed cuts reflected the sublime form of the young batsman from Delhi. Yet again he showed immense maturity in pacing his innings in accordance with the match situation. While he went about playing his shots freely to start with, he dropped anchor after the dismissal of Yuvraj. Along with his skipper MS Dhoni, he stitched a solid half-century partnership to put India on course. The youngster’s bril- liant effort fetched him the play- er of the match award. In the beginning of the Indian innings, Bangladesh pac- ers Syed Rasel and Shafiul Islam struggled to adjust their line to the right-left combination of Dinesh Karthik and Gautam Gambhir. While Karthik feasted on wide deliveries outside the off- stump with some cracking square-cuts and drives, Gambhir used leg glance with great effect. Gambhir (41), who batted with caution and care, lost his wicket to a turning delivery from Naeem Islam. The left-han- der charged down the ground to loft the ball over mid-wicket but was deceived completely as the ball turned sharply and crashed into his stumps. Naeem went on to dismiss in-form Yuvraj Singh. Like fel- low left-hander Gambhir, Yuvraj too fell to the off-spinner, trying to play against the turn. He was wrapped lbw for 13. The onus was once again on the pair that had saved India the blushes in their last game against Bangladesh. Skipper MS Dhoni (32) joined Virat Kohli to make sure no further damage was done. While Dhoni brought his customary nudges into play, Virat effortlessly changed gears. Both batsmen were lightning quick between the 22 yards and rotated the strike at will. In no time, the pair raced to a crucial 68-run partnership. The stand ended when Dhoni played one straight to mid-on off Shakib’s bowling. Despite Dhoni’s fall, India were well on course to another thumping win with Virat and Suresh Raina going strong. Virat was lucky to be dropped twice in a single over when Ashraful dropped him in the deep and then keeper Mushfiqur Rahim put down a stumping chance. The young- ster was perhaps destined to get a hundred, which he did by hit- ting the winning boundary. Earlier, after being reduced to 95 for 5, Bangladesh fought back well to post a respectable 247 for 6 in their 50 overs. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan led from the front and notched up a brilliant 85 – the highest score by a Bangladeshi captain against India. Middle order batsman Mohammad Mahmudullah (64*) once again came good, scoring his second half-century against Indian in the series. After stitch- ing a 102-run partnership with his skipper, Mahmudullah bat- ted through the innings to give the bowlers enough runs to fight with. Bangladesh started off their innings scratchily, losing two early wickets in the form of opener Imrul Kayes (9) and Mohammad Ashraful (4). The batsmen paid the price for their poor shot selection. With half the side back into the hut for 95, the hosts needed a special effort. And it was the captain, who decided to lead from the front with a fine knock of 85. After undertaking the repair work by way of defense, Shakib brought his shots into play. He began his assault with a scorching six over mid-wicket off Ravindra Jadeja and never looked back. His aggressive approach forced the Indian bowlers to err in line and the skipper made merry at their cost. India’s bowling was once again exposed in the death overs. The pacers and spinners undid all the good work of earli- er overs by conceding 95 runs in the final 10. The players arrived in Togo’s airport late Sunday night, some wearing bandages on their arms to cover bullet wounds. Togo’s press officer and an assistant coach were killed on Friday, along with their Angolan driver, after suspected rebels in Angola’s volatile Cabinda region raked their bus with machine gunfire as they headed to the African Cup of Nations. Togo withdrew from the tournament in the wake of the attack. Speaking late Sunday, Prime Minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo said the tragedy was “a big loss for Togo, a sad day for Togolese football.” The players, looking downcast, were met by supporters and family members at Lome airport and whisked away to a hotel. Togo flags at half-mast as 3-day mourning starts ROME (AP) - Dealing with racism inside Italy’s football stadiums has prompted a debate between the country’s interior minister and foot- ball federation president. Interior Minister Roberto Maroni wants the federation (FIGC) to push referees to stop games when there are instances of racism, while football federation president Giancarlo Abete cites a document from the interi- or ministry requiring security officials to make the decision. The debate follows episodes of racism from both Chievo Verona and Inter Milan fans in a game last week. Chievo supporters derided Inter striker Mario Balotelli, who is of Ghanaian descent, while Inter fans were fined for their behavior toward Chievo’s Brazilian mid- fielder Luciano. “I really think the FIGC should adopt very strict rules,” Maroni said. “If there is even a mini- mal hint of racial taunts, the referee should imme- diately suspend the game.” “The document that Abete cites stipulates that the security chief can interrupt the game if there are racial taunts that create problems for fans’ security. But I’m asking the federation to allow the referee to sus- pend the game if there are racial taunts even if there are not security problems.” Abete replied that too much is being asked of the referees. “They’re supposed to see fouls in real time without the help of replays, listen to fans’ chants and evaluate if they are of a racial con- notation, and now they’re being asked to decide on their own to interrupt the game,” Abete said. ROME (AP) - Dealingwith racism inside Italy’sfootball stadiums hasprompted a debatebetween the country’sinterior minister and foot-ball federation president.

Interior MinisterRoberto Maroni wants thefederation (FIGC) to pushreferees to stop gameswhen there are instancesof racism, while footballfederation presidentGiancarlo Abete cites adocument from the interi-or ministry requiringsecurity officials to makethe decision.

The debate followsepisodes of racism fromboth Chievo Verona andInter Milan fans in agame last week.

Chievo supportersderided Inter strikerMario Balotelli, who is ofGhanaian descent, whileInter fans were fined fortheir behavior towardChievo’s Brazilian mid-fielder Luciano.

“I really think the

FIGC should adopt verystrict rules,” Maroni said.“If there is even a mini-mal hint of racial taunts, the referee should imme-diately suspend thegame.”

“The document thatAbete cites stipulates thatthe security chief caninterrupt the game ifthere are racial tauntsthat create problems forfans’ security. But I’masking the federation toallow the referee to sus-pend the game if thereare racial taunts even ifthere are not securityproblems.”

Abete replied that toomuch is being asked ofthe referees.

“They’re supposed tosee fouls in real timewithout the help ofreplays, listen to fans’chants and evaluate ifthey are of a racial con-notation, and now they’rebeing asked to decide ontheir own to interrupt thegame,” Abete said.
