Notre Dame (3-3-1) is coming off a loss and a tie last weekend at the Stanford Invitational. Emrich has been in the neurocare program atWakeMedHospitalinCary,N.C.,sinceMay27follow-ingseizuresandsubsequentcardiacarrestthatlefthimwithoutapulseformorethan20minutes.Afterhiswife,Lisa,helpedperformCPRandhewasbrought tothehospital tobeputonan iceprotocol therapy,Emrichspentmorethanthreeweeks inacomaandtheearlyprognosiswas poor due to early onsetmyoclonus, amovementdisorderindicatingseverebraindamage. However,Emrich’scondition improveddramaticallyonFather’sDay2011,whenhecameoutofthecomaandrepeatedthenamesofhisthreedaughters.Sincethattime,hiscognitionisexcellentandhispersonality(includinghiswonderfulsenseofhumor)iscompletelyintact,althoughhe remainsphysicallychallengedduetosevereactionmyoclonus,whichhasmadeitdifficultforhimto feedhimself,situponhisownorwalk.Assuch,hisrecoverywilltakemonthsorevenyears,andthelong-termphysicaloutcomeisuncertain.
