    FOREWORD INTRODUCTION

The UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics provides a collection of statistics and indicators relevant to the analysis of international trade, investment and development. Reliable statistical information is indispensable for formulating sound economic policies and recommendations that may commit countries for many years as they strive to integrate into the world economy and improve the living standards of their citizens. Whether it is for research, consultation or technical cooperation, UNCTAD needs reliable and internationally comparable trade, financial and macroeconomic data, covering several decades and as many countries as possible.

In addition to facilitating the work of the secretariats economists, the Handbook provides all other users - policymakers, research specialists, academics, officials from national governments or international organizations, journalists, executive managers, members of non-governmental organizations - with the access to cross-comparable sets of data. The Handbook presents a consolidated, yet wide-ranging overview of the statistical series available at UNCTAD.

The publication is available in printed copy and DVD format. Moreover, the statistical series published in the Handbook are also available online at UNCTADstat(http://unctadstat.unctad.org/wds). Unlike the Handbook, which captures statistics at one point of time, UNCTADstat is continuously updated and enhanced, thus providing users with the latest available data. Consequently, the figures from the Handbook may not always correspond to UNCTADstat.

The paper copy of the UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics 2014 has been streamlined and is shorter than the 2013 version. The number of country groupings presented has been reduced. However, all the groupings included in the previous editions are still available on the DVD and in UNCTADstat.

    SIGNIFICATION DES SYMBOLESEXPLANATION OF SYMBOLS

0 Zero means that the amount is nil or negligible.

_ The symbol underscore indicates that the item is not applicable.

.. Two dots indicate that the data are not available or are not separately reported.

    - The use of a hyphen on data area means that data is estimated and included in the aggregations but not published. A hyphen between years (e.g. 1985-1990) signifies the full period involved, including the initial and final years.

    (b) Break in the series (b) Rupture de srie (e) Estimate (e) Estimation (f) Forecast (f) Prvision (p) Provisional data (p) Donne provisoire (r) Revised data (r) Donne rvise (u) Preliminary estimate (u) Estimation prliminaire

Some exceptions are indicated in footnotes.

Unless otherwise specified, country aggregates are the sums of the relevant country data by group. Calculations of aggregates may include data estimated by the UNCTAD secretariat that are not necessarily all reported separately. When there are not enough representative reported or estimated data points within a country aggregate, no aggregation is undertaken and symbol (-) is assigned.

Because of rounding, details and percentages in tables do not necessarily add up to totals.

Data are checked to ensure that they match the geographical coverage of the countries, as described at the beginning of the Handbook. However, sometimes gaps cannot not be avoided dueto data unavailability. They are thus described in notes at the end of the table.

Unless otherwise stated, dollars ($) refer to United States dollars and data in dollars are expressed in current United States dollars of the year to which they refer.

Average annual growth rates are defined as the coefficient b in the exponential trend function y = aebt where t stands for time. This method takes all observations in a period into account. Therefore, the resulting growth rates reflect trends that are not unduly influenced by exceptional values.

The term economies, as used in this publication, refers to regions, countries and territories. In case of change in the statistical coverage of a country, it is identified by adding an end year after the country name.

Every year, UNCTAD reviews and updates the definition and composition of country groupings. Such changes may impact significantly on the figures from one version to another. The modifications in the groupings are thoroughly outlined in the section Documentation at UNCTADstat website.

Geographical distribution of developing, transition and developed economies

There is no established convention for the designation of "developing", "transition" and "developed" countries or areas in the United Nations system.

The World total represents the sum of the figures of the above three groups plus the figures of a group of "Other territories" not elsewhere classified. These territories are included in the world total if they have been reported but are not presented individually or in any group.

"Developing" and "developed" categories are further divided by geographical region.

The composition of the groupings is detailed below. La composition des groupements est dtaille ci-dessous.

    MEMO ITEMS POUR MMOIRE

Developing economies are presented at three levels of aggregation: the total group, the group excluding China (referring to continental China) and the group excluding the least developed countries.

Developing economies are also categorized into three subgroups according to their average 2004-2006 nominal GDP per capita: high-income (above $4,500), middle-income (between $1,000 and $4,500) and low-income (below $1,000).

The category, "Heavily indebted poor countries" includes those economies benefiting from the debt reduction initiative of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Since 1994, the United Nations has recognized the particular problems of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS). However, the UN never established criteria to determine an official list of SIDS. An unofficial list is used by UNCTAD for analytical purposes.

Least developed countries and landlocked developing countries are recognized by the United Nations as categories that require special attention from the international community.

The tables included in this book represent analytical summaries of the full time-series contained in the DVD version of the UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics 2014.

The Handbook refers to the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 3 detailed in the DVD. Depending on the table, nomenclature of statistics is detailed at the 3-digit level or by broad product groupings as follows:

Codes SITC Product groupings Groupements de produits CTCI 0 - 9 All products Total tous produits 0 + 1 + 22 + 4 All food items Produits alimentaires 2 minus (22 + 27 + 28) Agricultural raw materials Matires premires dorigine agricole

    PART ONE International merchandise trade

PREMIRE PARTIE Commerce international des marchandises

Table 1.1 shows the value of total exports (FOB - Free On Board) and imports (CIF - Cost, Insurance and Freight), expressed in millions of dollars and percentages of the world total, of individual countries, geographical regions and selected economic groupings. The trade flows shown in this table are on the General Trade System basis for all countries except those marked with an asterisk which employ the Special Trade System. The General Trade System is used when the statistical territory of a compiling country coincides with its economic territory. Consequently, imports include all goods entering the economic territory of a compiling country and exports include all goods leaving the economic territory of the compiling country. The Special Trade System is used when the statistical territory comprises only a particular part of the economic territory within which goods may be disposed of without customs restriction. In such a case, imports include all goods entering the free circulation area of the compiling country, which means cleared through customs for home use, and exports include all goods leaving the free circulation area of a compiling country.

Average annual growth rates of international trade derived from table 1.1 are presented in table 1.2.

Table 1.3 contains trade balances (exports FOB minus imports CIF). Balances are expressed as a percentage of imports.

Table 1.4 shows the relative importance of trade among group members as compared to the regional or total trade of that group.

PART TWOInternational merchandise trade by region

Table 2.1 shows the export and import structure of individualcountries by main regions of origin and destination. Data are presented for as many individual countries as possible, while trade partners are grouped in 14 major clusters.

Table 2.2 (A to J) presents the structure of exports by destination and imports by origin by major commodity groups for 10 selected country groups. The table provides detailed information on the world trade network for 19 regions of origin and destination and six commodity groups.

    NOTES GNRALESGENERAL NOTES

Totals of international merchandise trade presented in the tables in Part one of the Handbook are not strictly comparable with those in Part two and three. Discrepancies arise due to the use of different complementary sources and treatment of unallocated residual trade flows.

Exports by destination may differ considerably in some cases from data on imports for a variety of factors, among which the following may be of particular importance:

    - Most import data are reported on a CIF rather than a FOB basis; - Les importations sont dclares en principe sur la base de la valeur CAF plutt que sur la base de la valeur FAB ;

    - There is a time lag between the date on which goods are recorded as exports and their arrival at their destination;

    - Les importations de marchandises peuvent arriver destination et tre enregistres longtemps aprs la date de leur enregistrement lexportation ;

    - There may be considerable differences between the recorded destination of exports and the actual destination as shown in import statistics;

    - Dimportantes diffrences peuvent exister entre la destination des exportations dclare par les pays exportateurs et la destination relle telle quindique dans les statistiques dimportation ;

    - Margins of exports and imports may not be allocated across commodity groups in the same way;

    - La rpartition des marges dexportations et dimportations entre les groupes de produits peut aussi diffrer;

    - The use of different product nomenclatures by the exporting and importing countries.

    - L'utilisation de nomenclatures de produits diffrentes par le pays exportateur et le pays importateur.

The main source for data shown in this chapter and in tables 3.1 and 3.2 is the UN COMTRADE database. These data should be used with good knowledge of the coverage and the limitations of the main data source available at http://comtrade.un.org/db/help/uReadMeFirst.aspx.

PART THREE International merchandise trade by product

Table 3.1 shows the structure of exports and imports for individual economies by nine commodity groups (total, all food items, agricultural raw materials, fuels, ores and metals, manufactured goods, including chemical products, machinery and transport equipment and other manufactured goods) for selected years.

Table 3.2 (A, B and C, respectively) presents the structure of exports for the world, for developing and developed economies, by product, at the SITC Revision 3, 3-digit level. Each product share of world exports is calculated for each economic grouping as well as the average annual growth rate and the latters deviation from the world growth rate.

Table 3.2D establishes for each economy the list of main products exported (SITC group, Revision 3, 3-digit level). Each products share of total exports for individual countries, geographical regions and the world is also indicated.

Table 3.2E lists major exporters of 70 leading products among developing economies at the SITC Revision 3, 3-digit level as well as corresponding shares in world trade.

Table 3.3 provides concentration indices and structural change indices for exports and imports by product group (SITC, Revision 3, 3-digit level). The first indicator shows whether a product market is concentrated in a few countries or more homogeneously distributed among several countries. The structural change indicator shows whether the market share for a given product among export countries has changed significantly when compared with a reference year.

PART FOUR International merchandise trade indicators

Table 4.1 includes concentration and diversification indices. The concentration index specifically shows how exports and imports of individual countries or country groupings are concentrated on several products or otherwise distributed in a more homogeneous manner among a series of products. The diversification index indicates whether the structure of exports or imports by product of a given country or country grouping differs from the world patterns.

Table 4.2 contains export and import volume indices, rounding out trade value available in tables 1.1 and 1.2. Export and import unit value indices, derived terms of trade and purchasing power of exports indices are also provided.

To improve data coverage, especially for the latest periods, the following procedure was used in the calculation of unit value indices:

    - A set of average price indices at the SITC Revision 3, 3-digit level are constructed using UNCTADstat Commodity Price Statistics, international and national sources and UNCTAD secretariat estimates.

    - At the country level, unit value indices are calculated using current year trade values (available from table 3.2) as weights at the SITC Revision 3, 3-digit level.

In some instances these indices may differ from the estimates published in official sources, since the main aim of the Handbook is to provide tentative estimates for most developing countries on a comparable basis.

Table 4.3 presents average applied import most favoured nation (MFN) tariff rates for major categories of non-agricultural and non-fuel products by individual markets.

PART FIVE International trade in services

CINQUIME PARTIE Commerce international des services

Table 5.1 presents exports and imports of total trade in services by individual country, geographical region and selected economic groupings. The statistics shown correspond to IMF Balance of Payments Manual (BPM5, 1993) definitions and are jointly compiled by UNCTAD and the World Trade Organization (WTO). The aggregate data from table 5.1 include estimates of missing values that are not shown separately. Services are defined as the economic output of intangible commodities that may be produced, transferred and consumed at the same time. However, services cover a heterogeneous range of intangible products and activities that are difficult to capture within a single definition and are sometimes hard to separate from goods. Services are generally hard to measure as they are produced and consumed simultaneously.

Table 5.2 presents statistics on international trade in services by category of service for selected country groups and for major individual economy exporters and importers among developing and transition economies, as well as for developed countries. Similar to table 5.1, the data adhere to IMF Balance of Payments Manual (BPM5, 1993) definitions and are jointly compiled by UNCTAD andthe WTO. The following services categories are included: transport, travel, communication, construction, computer and information services, insurance, financial services, royalties and licence fees, other business services, and personal, cultural and recreational services.

Table 5.3 describes international maritime transport. It contains data on the size of the world merchant fleet by flag of registration and by type of ship, region and economy. The table incorporates a consolidated time series from several issues of the UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport. The Review reports on the worldwide evolution of shipping, sea-ports and multimodal transport of liquid bulk, dry bulk and container traffic.

    PART SIX Commodities

    SIXIME PARTIE Produits de base

Table 6.1 includes the annual and quarterly free-market price indices in current dollars for selected commodities exported by developing economies. Price indices are also available for aggregated primary commodity groups such as food, tropical beverages, vegetable oilseeds and oils, agricultural raw materials and minerals, ores and metals. A combined price index in current dollars is also available. Weights of the aggregated price indices are based on the value of exports of developing countries from 1999 to 2001 and the base year is 2000 (2000=100).

    PART SEVEN International finance

    SEPTIME PARTIE Finance internationale

Table 7.1 presents values of the current account (net) in millions of dollars and as percentages of GDP. Balance of payments current account data cover all transactions between residents and non-residents of a reporting economy. In general, the current account balance describes the difference between current receipts and expenditures for internationally traded goods, services and income payments. From a national perspective, the current account balance shows the gap between national savings and domestic investment.

Table 7.2 contains information on foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and outflows. These figures correspond to the Statistical Annexes of the UNCTAD World Investment Report 2014. FDI is defined as an investment involving a long-term relationship and reflecting a lasting interest in and control by a resident entity in one economy (foreign direct investor or parent enterprise) of an enterprise resident in a different economy (FDI enterprise or affiliate enterprise or foreign affiliate). Such investment involves both the initial transaction between the two entities and all subsequent transactions between them and among foreign affiliates. A direct investment enterprise is defined as an incorporated or unincorporated enterprise in which the direct investor, resident in another economy, owns 10 percent or more of the ordinary shares or voting power (or the equivalent).

Table 7.3 presents values of receipts (credits) of personal remittances in millions of dollars. They also show personal remittances receipts as percentage of GDP and international trade

Table 7.4 includes data on payments (debits) of personal remittances, based on the same approach used for table 7.3.

    PART EIGHT GDP and population

    HUITIME PARTIE PIB et population

Table 8.1 provides information on nominal gross domestic product (GDP), total and per capita. The GDP per capita in dollars are derived from data provided in national currencies converted into dollars using prevailing official exchange rates.

  • xvi

    NOTES GNRALESGENERAL NOTES

Conversion of these series, originally expressed in national currency into dollars through the use of official exchange rates, is not always satisfactory owing to the deviation of the official exchange rate from purchasing power parities. For this reason, the data presented in this table are subject to certain distortions and should be used only as an approximation.

Table 8.2 contains annual average growth rates for total and per capita real GDP. The growth rates are based on GDP at constant 2005 prices in dollars.

Table 8.3 provides data on GDP by type of expenditure and kind of economic activity.

Table 8.4 provides total population estimates. The figures for groups may be different from those published by the UNDESA Population Division where UNCTAD country groupings composition differs.
