Ford Pinto Fire Controversy New England Compounding Center

• Ford Pinto known to have fuel tank problems which could lead to fatalities and
severe injuries.
• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration set a value on human life of $200k.
• From this, Ford estimated cost of $67k per severe burn victim.
• In 1973 memo, Ford estimated potential of 180 fatalities if vehicles not recalled.
• Cost of fixing the problem estimated at $11 per vehicle.
• No recall was performed. More than 500 fatalities occurred.
• Lee Iacocca: “We were bombarded with suits over the Pinto…so we kept our
mouths shut. Winning in court was our top priority; nothing else mattered.”

• Pharmacy not supervised by FDA shipped toxic drugs to patients.
• “Compounding pharmacies” make custom drugs 1 patient at a time.
• NECC went national in 2009; quantities increased by factor of 1,000.
• Became a manufacturer with no FDA oversight.
• 17k vials of fungus-contaminated steroids shipped to 23 states.
• Injected into patients’ joints and spines.
• 48 deaths, 420 patients suffer from persistent fungal infections with no cure.
