“Two Rivers Classic” - UNC Pembroke Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 | 6 p.m.

LAST MEETING: (OCT. 8, 2012)PEMBROKE, NC – UNCP shook off a 1-1/2 hour rain delay and a 14-10 halftime defi cit with 21 points and 214 second half yards as the Braves stayed perfect in their four-game-old series with Fayetteville State with a 31-21 win over the visiting Broncos on Saturday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. Elliott Powell carried the ball 14 times for a game-best 97 yards and a third quarter score, while backfi eld mate Damonte Terry rushed for 93 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense for UNCP (1-1). Junior Luke Charles threw for 107 yards and a pair of interceptions on 15-of-33 passing, while also adding 32 yards (four carries) on the ground. Triggered by seven tackles for loss, including a trio of sacks, the UNCP defense held the visitors to 126 yards in the second half, including just 63 offensive yards in a highlight-fi lled third quarter for the hosts. Cadarreus Mason posted a game-high 12 tackles, including one stop behind the line, while DeVante Bush, Joshua Gooding and Mike Keck each tallied a sack. Bush and Dominique Bridges both forced and recovered a fumble for the Black & Gold as well. Fayetteville State (0-2) was led by quarterback Andreas Hudson who fi nished his night under center with 134 yards on 10-of-20 passing. Hudson also rushed for 25 yards (10 carries) and a second quarter touchdown as well. The Braves went 49 yards on 10 plays on their opening drive of the contest before settling for a 44-yard fi eld goal by Matt Davis, and then took advantage of a Fayetteville State turnover later in the period to grab a 10-0 advantage following a 1-yard scoring plunge by Terry. The points would be scarce for the hosts the rest of the half, however, as Fayetteville State put together a pair of long scoring drives to take a 14-10 edge into the locker room. UNCP was methodical in putting together a 6-play, 54-yard scoring drive on its fi rst possession of the second stanza and retook the lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Terry just more than three minutes into the third quarter. After forcing a three-and-out by the Broncos on the ensuing possession, the Braves needed just one play to extend their lead as Powell found space and took care of the rest with a 69-yard touchdown gallop that padded UNCP’s lead out to 24-14. Donald Johnson scooped up a Powell fumble minutes into the fourth quarter and raced 20 yards for a touchdown to pull Fayetteville State within striking distance, 24-21, with 9:40 left to play, but UNCP buckled down on defense the remainder of the game before Terry added his third touchdown of the night, a 1-yard dive across the goal line, with 2:59 remaining. UNCP will hit the road again next weekend when the Braves make the short trip up U.S. 74 to battle region rival Wingate (1-1) in a 1:30 p.m. contest at Irwin Belk Stadium. The Bulldogs posted a 37-9 upset of 16th-ranked Albany State earlier on Saturday.

“Two Rivers Classic” - UNC Pembroke Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 | 6 p.m.

BRAVES LAST OUTING: (Sept. 5, 2013)

PEMBROKE, NC – PEMBROKE – Fifth-ranked Winston-Salem State scored 21-straight points to take a 21-12 advantage with 4:24 left in the third quarter, but UNC Pembroke used a game-changing interception return for touchdown by Mike Lawrence and took the lead for good on a 22-yard fi eld goal by Connor Haskins four minutes later en route to a 25-21 win over the Rams on Thursday evening at Grace P. Johnson Stadium. The win gave the Braves (1-0) their fi rst win over a top-10 ranked opponent, while also helping the Black & Gold snap a three-game losing streak to get on the board against their region nemesis. The setback snapped a 20-game regular season win streak for the Rams (0-1) who had not dropped a regular season outing since a 31-27 loss to Shaw on Oct. 30, 2010. The game, which attracted a stadium record 7,948 fans, was played in front of a live national television audience on CBS Sports Network as NCAA Division II’s “Game of the Week”. “I am so proud of our guys. This is the fi rst step in what we are trying to accomplish,” said UNCP head coach Pete Shinnick. “You saw a football team out there tonight that played really well together. Winston-Salem State always seems to have an answer, and they couldn’t tonight. That’s a great credit to our defense.” Senior Luke Charles fi nished the outing with a modest 218 yards on 24-of-39 passing, while Elliott Powell fi nished his night with 75 yards on 16 carries. Jason Perry led the receiving corps with 59 yards on four catches, with senior Te’vell Williams hauling in eight of Charles’s passes for 46 yards. Haskins did his part as well, completing the night with a trio of fi eld goals, including a 44-yarder midway through the fourth quarter that provided the game’s fi nal points. But this night belonged to UNCP’s stop troops. The Black & Gold held WSSU to just 91 rushing yards on 36 carries, while also recording 11 tackles for loss (-36 yards) and forcing three turnovers. Special teams was also a plus on the night, especially in the fi rst quarter when Rakeem Overby returned a punt 55 yards and newcomer George Whigham followed with a 69-yard kickoff return later in the period. UNCP will head to Fayetteville on Sept. 15 to continue its Two Rivers Classic series with I-95 rival Fayetteville State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium.

“Two Rivers Classic” - UNC Pembroke Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 | 6 p.m.

BRONCOS LAST OUTING: (Sept. 7, 2013)

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The season-opening game held in Fayetteville, NC featured two head coaches who are embarking on their new careers. Virginia State’s Latrell Scott took over the Trojan’s program after being at the helm of the University of Richmond’s program for one season. Lawrence Kershaw heads the Broncos of Fayetteville State in his fi rst head coach position.

The proverbial test, of who had the better up-start program, came down to the last play of the game.

With his team in fi eld goal position, Devonte Hunt shouldered the pressure and avoided a diving Bronco for a 30-yard kick that split the up-rights with triple zeros on the clock. The extended arms of the offi cials sent the visiting sideline into pandemonium and downhearted the full home crowd with the 29-28 score in favor of Virginia State.

Fayetteville State received the opening kickoff; but went three-and-out with its fi rst possession. An Antonio Mayo (Jr. - Jacksonville, NC) 57-yard punt positioned the VSU Trojans on its 4-yard line for its fi rst attempt on offense.

The Broncos defense forced quarterback Justin Thorpe to fumble on the Trojans’ eight-yard line where Travis Scales (Fr. - Southern Pines, NC) recovered the ball for FSU. The fi rst points of the game were scored at the 13:16 mark by QB Jemeryn Jenkins (Jr. - San Bernardino, CA); as he scampered for the eight-yard run-in.

The Trojans second attempt at a drive lasted 16 plays and encompassed 54 yards; but was botched by a 19-yard missed fi eld goal that went wide left by Devonte Hunt.

Fayetteville State took over on downs after the missed attempt; on its 20-yard line. After moving the ball 18 yards in fi ve plays, Jemeryn Jenkins threw his sixth pass of the game and connected with Kasunn Williams (Jr. - Rocky Mount, NC) for 62 yards and the Broncos second touchdown with 2:02 left in the fi rst quarter.

Virginia State found some consistency in their run game as the ground attack helped eat up 72 yards on 12 plays. The Trojans’ Lamont Britt reached the end-zone with a two-yard rush to cut the defi cit to 6-14 with 11:57 left to play in the fi rst half. The trick play on the extra-point attempt failed due to illegal motion by VSU.

On the Trojans next possession, Korey Lyzenga booted a 69-yard punt that was downed on the Broncos 10-yard line. A gallant defensive stand by VSU forced FSU to punt from its 15-yard line. The ball soared past Mayo (the punter) and out of the back of the end-zone for a safety; which added two points to the Trojans come-back effort.

On the pursuing VSU possession, the Bronco defense fl exed its muscle once again as Marquel Gathers (So. Smithfi eld, NC) forced Lamont Britt to fumble on the Trojans 39-yard line. Defensive Captain John Brown (Jr. - Fayetteville, NC) recovered the fumble and advanced it for a defensive score and a 21-8 lead with 4:50 left in the half.

Fayetteville State took to the locker room at intermission with a 13-point lead; but had a staggering seven penalties for 70 yards over-shadowed FSU’s fi rst half success. Virginia State minimized its penalties to two for a loss of fi ve yards total. The Trojans coughed up two turnovers for which one end in points for the Broncos.

After the break, the Broncos eventually began its fi rst drive of the second half on its 31-yard line with 11:36 on the clock. FSU quickly marched its way to the VSU six-yard line with aspirations of increasing its lead. After a dropped pass by Kasann Williams in a second-and-goal situation, two false start penalties sent Fayetteville State backwards to the 16-yard line.

Jemeryn Jenkins gave Williams a shot at redemption with a completed pass into the end-zone; but the yellow laundry on the play erased the cheers and delight as Williams was fl agged with offensive pass interference.

With another third-and-goal opportunity, but this time from the VSU 31-yard line, Jenkins hit #19 (Williams) once again in the end-zone. The score rejuvenated life in the home stands as the Broncos increased the score 28-8 with 6:49 left in the third quarter.

Virginia State bounced back during the next possession with an 11-play 74-yard drive that ended with Thorpe connecting with Jaivon Smallwood on a 13-yard scoring pass.

Trailing 28-14, VSU’s linebacker George Feggins picked off a pass from Jenkins on the Fayetteville State 30-yard line. With 1:04 left in the third quarter, Jordan Anderson pounded the 30 yards with three rushing attempts to help VSU trial by only eight points (28-20). His third attempt crossed the goal line from 17 yards out and no time remaining in the quarter.

For the entire quarter, FSU collected fi ve penalties that added up to 42 yards.

The miscues would soon begin to unravel the Broncos.

With the eight-point lead, FSU returned the kickoff 40 yards for its drive to start on the 50-yard line. The Broncos advanced 29 yards in six plays but failed on a 37-yard fi eld goal attempt that sailed wide left with 12:23 left in the game.

The momentum swing continued to move in favor of the Trojans. Even though the Bronco defense forced VSU to face a 3rd down and 26 situation, a pass interference penalty advanced the Trojans and gave them a fresh set of downs. A few plays later, an unsportsmanlike penalty (15 yards) and illegal procedure call (10 yards) on FSU place the Trojans within scoring distance. Jordan Anderson rushed into the end-zone from fi ve yards out to bring Virginia State within two points, 26-28, with 6:41 left in the game. VSU attempted to tie the score on a two-point conversion, but the pass attempt was broken up by the Broncos. Thirty-two yards of the 79-yard drive came from FSU penalties.

Motivated by the possibilities, the Trojan defense held strong on Bronco drive and forced FSU to punt after six plays and eight yards.

Three minutes and forty-two seconds stood on the clock and the Trojans had the ball on its 15-yard line. VSU put the ball in the air and caught another break with a pass interference call; which gave Virginia State a fresh set of downs on its 35-yard line. Justin Thorpe found Gene Holloman down the fi eld for 31 yards where he stepped out of bounds at the Broncos 29-yard line. Thorpe connected with Markee Brooks three plays later for ten yards and a fi rst-and-ten possession on the Broncos 16-yard line. Jordan Anderson would reach the 12-yard line with Coach Scott calling a timeout with 0:04 left in the game and an opportunity to win the game with one play left.

Virginia State monopolized the time on the clock with 40:27 of possession time. VSU had the ball 10:51 in the fi rst quarter and 12:01 in the fourth. Fayetteville ran a fast-pace offense that detained the ball for 17:29 of the game.

The Trojans racked up 400 total yards on offense with 85 plays. 207 yards were gained through the air on 21-of-29 attempts. The ground game collected 193 yards on 56 rushes. VSU lost two fumbles in the fi rst half and avoided throwing any picks. Four fl ags were thrown at Virginia State for 25 yards.

Jordan Anderson rushed 29 yards for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Justin Thorpe was 21-of-29 in passing for 207 yards. He threw for one touchdown and was sacked twice. Markee Brooks pulled in seven of the passes for 56 yards.

Fayetteville State had 285 yards of total offense on 47 plays. The Broncos made its way through the air with 219 passing yards on 13-of-25 attempts and one interception thrown. FSU rushed the ball 22 times for 66 yards. Eighteen penalties were whistled against Fayetteville State that added up to 175 yards.

Jemeryn Jenkins had the longest pass of 62 yards and two touchdowns. He ran the ball 12 times for 26 yards and one score.

With the one-back offensive set, Andre Montgomery (So. - Goldsboro, NC) and Colon Bailey, Jr. (Sr. - Manteo, NC) both had three touches each. Montgomery fi nished the game with 22 yards while Bailey had 18.

Kasunn Williams snatched down 12 receptions for 121 yards and two scores. Williams pulled in the 62-yard scurry.

Michael Johnson (Jr. - Raleigh, NC) led the defense with a game-high 15 tackles (10 solo - 5 assisted). Courtney Tate (Sr. - Virginia Beach, VA) and Marquel Gathers combined for a quarter sack for a loss of fi ve yards. Tate fi nished with 11 tackles while Gathers fi nished with ten. Thomas Perry (So. - Windsor, NC) also fi nished with ten tackles and one sack for three yards. He had two tackles for a loss of four yards.

Virginia State will enjoy the comeback victory and travel to East Rutherford, NJ for a matchup against Benedict in the New York Urban League Classic.

Fayetteville State will have a week to regroup and adjust as the Broncos play host to UNC Pembroke in the 5th annual Two Rivers Classic. Game time is slated for 6:00 pm in Jeralds stadium.

“Two Rivers Classic” - UNC Pembroke Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 | 6 p.m.

Lawrence Kershaw is beginning his fi rst season as the Head Football Coach at Fayetteville State University.

He was offi cially introduced as the 15th head coach in program history during a press conference held at Felton J. Capel Arena on Jan. 22, 2013.

Coach Kershaw has eight years of experience as an offensive coordinator and a total of 17 on the collegiate level. He will take over the Bronco program after serving as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL for the past fi ve years. FAMU fi nished as Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Champions in 2010 with a 7-1 record.

Under his schemes in 2012, the Rattlers fi nished fi rst in the MEAC in Passing Effi ciency (141.9), Touchdown Passes (18) and Completion Percentage (70.4). FAMU was ranked second in the conference in Pass Offense (236.2 per game) and third in Total Offense (359.0 per game). The offense has ranked in the top three of numerous offensive categories through his fi ve years. Kershaw has helped guide 20 offensive student-athletes and six position players (linemen) to All-MEAC honors. Three of his linemen, Robert Okeafor, Steve Brazzle and Anthony Collins garnered All-American accolades. One of his quarterbacks was named MEAC Offensive Player of the Year. The Rattler offense once ranked 13th in the nation in Scoring Offense and 17th in Rushing Offense.

In 2007, Kershaw was the offensive line coach at Hampton University. The offense fi nished fi rst in the MEAC in Scoring, Passing and Red Zone Offense. In 2006, he served as the offensive line coach and coordinator of the strength and conditioning program at Truman State University.

A 1995 graduate of Virginia State University, Kershaw has abundant experiences in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. At the completion of playing career, he signed on as the offensive line coach for three seasons.

Kershaw completed his Masters of Education Degree in 1997 at VSU and returned to his home state of New York in 1998 to volunteer at Fordham University.

After the brief stint away, he returned to his alma-mater in 2000 as the offensive line coach and took over as the offensive coordinator a year later.

The Trojans won two CIAA Championships (1995 & 1996) and fi nished runner-up in 1997.

Lawrence Kershaw expanded his experience outside the CIAA after he served as the Assistant Head Coach at Virginia Union University from 2004-05.

Lawrence Kershaw is beginning his fi rst season as that Fayetteville State University.

“Two Rivers Classic” - UNC Pembroke Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 | 6 p.m.

Having left his footprints in each stage of his storied coaching career, Pete Shinnick will begin his 26th year as a collegiate coach in 2012 and will take UNCP through its sixth year of intercollegiate football. Shinnick, who spent seven seasons at the helm of a dominating Azusa Pacifi c program, was offi cially named the Braves fi rst intercollegiate football head coach on Dec. 13, 2005. “Pete Shinnick’s competency and character impressed everyone that he came into contact with during the interview process,” said athletic director Dan Kenney. “He demonstrated through his previous coaching experiences that he is truly committed to the UNCP mission statement of ‘preparing champions.’ His coaching pedigree and background in football is outstanding.” Despite registering a 4-7 record in 2007 - UNCP’s fi rst season of intercollegiate football in more than 50 years - Shinnick has built the football program in Pembroke into one of the most dominating teams in the region. Over the last four seasons, the Braves have boasted one of the country’s most dominating defensive units and, last season, exhibited one of NCAA Division II’s most prolifi c offenses. UNCP has, thrice, fi nished among the nation’s top-12 teams in scoring defense, including leading the country in that category in 2008, and has, twice fi nished among the nation’s top 30 teams in rushing offense during that same time frame as well. Last season, the Braves fi nished with the nation’s sixth-best total offense. The current four-year run has produced a bevy of team accomplishments as the Braves shattered a record for the youngest team to qualify for the NCAA Division II Playoffs in 2009, but has also produced a multitude of individual honors as well. In the short fi ve-year history of the program, the Braves already boast 13 all-American accolades, as well as a lion’s share of all-NCAA Independent honors from D2Football.com. In addition, 13 different players have graced all-region squads, while another has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad. Having trained his entire life for a career in coaching, Shinnick grew up around the game of football as the son of late former NFL player Don Shinnick who played 13 seasons, all with the Baltimore Colts, before retiring as a player and becoming a coach. During the elder Shinnick’s playing days, he had a still-current NFL linebacker record 37 interceptions and was one of the driving forces of Baltimore’s run to NFL titles in 1958 and 1959. After retiring as a player, he served as an assistant coach with the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Raiders. In 1985, he was hired on to coach the New England Patriots who, a year after his hiring, captured the AFC championship. His legacy had a healthy infl uence on all of his sons. Three of Pete’s four brothers started football careers themselves with the four youngest playing at Division I colleges – Josh at UCLA, Adam at Penn State and Chris at Hawaii. Josh played on three Rose Bowl teams for the Bruins. Pete, the middle brother, lettered two years as an offensive guard for Colorado. During his career, he played in 21 games for the Buffaloes, including the 1985 Freedom Bowl and the 1986 Bluebonnet Bowl - CU’s fi rst bowl appearance since the 1977 Orange Bowl. While his family gave him a good football foundation, Shinnick built it upon playing for then-CU head coach Bill McCartney, as well as some of the most respected college football coaches in the nation – Ken Hatfi eld (Arkansas/Clemson), Jerry Pettibone (Oregon State) and Dal Shealy (Richmond).

Making a smooth transition into the world of coaching, he began his career as an offensive line coach for Richmond under Shealy. Although producing just a 4-7 record during his initial campaign as a coach, the Spiders’ running backs tallied fi ve 100-yard games behind an ever-improving offensive line, with lineman Howard Fahnestock taking home all-America honors at season’s end. Shinnick then joined Hatfi eld during his fi nal season with the Arkansas Razorbacks where he was a part of a defensive unit that allowed just 91 pass completions in registering a 10-2 record, a 7-1 league fi nish in a run to the 1989 Southwest Conference title and a trip to the 1990 Cotton Bowl. Hatfi eld would moved on to Clemson the following season, and brought Shinnick along for the ride. In two more seasons under Hatfi eld at Clemson, the Tigers ranked as one of the best teams in the nation. As coach of the tight ends, Shinnick helped Clemson to a cumulative 19-4-1 record during his time in South Carolina, including two top 25 fi nishes – a No. 9 ranking in 1990 and a No. 17 listing in 1991. The Tigers also made two bowl trips in Shinnick’s tenure, including a 30-0 win over Illinois in the 1990 Hall of Fame Bowl and a loss to Cal in the 1991 Citrus Bowl. Both Clemson teams were ranked wire-to-wire in the Associated Press poll, climbing as high as sixth after a 3-0 start in 1991. Pettibone called in Shinnick in 1992 to coordinate Oregon State’s recruiting efforts. Two years later, he had put together the Beavers’ fi rst-ever nationally ranked recruiting class. The class, which would eventually produce OSU’s 1998 senior class, featured a school-best eight all-star honorees and ranked 19th nationally and third in the Pacifi c-10 Conference. In two seasons with the Beavers, Shinnick was part of a staff that delivered improving Beaver teams, including the 1993 squad that posted victories over Arizona State and at Oregon, as well as a narrow home loss to then-19th ranked UCLA. In 1994, NCAA Division II powerhouse Northern Michigan called on Shinnick to become offensive line coach and, that year, the Wildcats churned out 24 points a game behind a dominating front line. The next three seasons, more success followed Shinnick as offensive coordinator for St. Cloud (Minn.) State where he coached three all-Americans, including running back Randy Martin who scored seven touchdowns in a rout of Minnesota State-Mankato during Shinnick’s third and fi nal season with the club. In 1998, Shinnick made his way back toward his family on the west coast, joining Fred Whitmire’s staff at Humboldt State in northern California. Shinnick received his fi rst head coaching stint at Azusa Pacifi c in 1999 following the movement of Dal Shealy’s son, Vick, to UNLV. The next seven years produced a dominating run for the Cougars as Shinnick skippered the squad to a cumulative 53-22 record, including a 34-10 mark from 2002-05. A total of 77 school records were established under his watch at APU, with the Cougars appearing in 48 consecutive NAIA top 25 rankings during his last four seasons and 75 of 86 listings during his seven-year stint in Azusa. Those last four seasons, the Cougars averaged more than 23.5 points and 328 yards of total offense per outing. The Cougars made fi ve NAIA postseason appearances from 1999-05, including semifi nal appearances in 1999 and 2004. Along the way, the enthusiastic and no-nonsense mentor also mentored 27 all-Americans and 11 academic all-Americans at APU. He was one of four fi nalists for the 2004 Schutt Sports coach of the year award. Shinnick earned his bachelor’s degree in business from Colorado in 1988 and later earned his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Clemson in 1992. Administratively, he serves on various American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) committees, including the Rules and Ethics committee, and is a regular on the camps and clinics circuit. He is a 20-year member of the AFCA and has a lifetime involvement in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Pete and his wife, Traci, recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary and are the proud parents of four children - Anna (17), Rachel (15), Elijah (12) and Benjamin (10). The family currently resides in Lumberton.
