II . The Promise of eternal life

Doctrine of Eternal Security:

“That continuous operation of the Holy Spirit in

the believer, by which the work of divine grace

begun in the heart is continued and brought

to completion.” Systematic Theology





“They whom God hath accepted in His Beloved,

effectually called and sanctified by His Spirit,

can neither…totally nor finally fall away from

the state of grace; but shall certainly

persevere therein to the end, and be eternally

saved.” Westminster Confession of Faith





“It is the privilege of all who are born again of

the Spirit to be assured of their salvation from

the very moment in which they trust Christ as

their Savior and Lord. This assurance is not

based on any kind of human merit, but is

produced by the witness of the Spirit, who

confirms in the believer the testimony of Godin His written Word.”

4 Possible Human States:

1. To be lost and know that you’re lost.

2. To be lost and think you are saved.

3. To be saved and not know it for sure.4. To be saved and know that you’re secure.

Eternal Security in the Gospel of John:




John 10:27-30:

1. True sheep listen to and follow their shepherd.

2. Jesus knows who His sheep are.

3. Eternal life is a gift from the Savior.

4. Those who know Him will never perish.

5. Our salvation can never be stolen

6. The sheep are safe because of the greatness

of the Father

7. We are doubly secure because

of God’s grip on us




The Book of 1 John:

- 1 John 2:25

- 1 John 5:11-13

1. The word “testimony” is from a courtroom

2. Eternal life begins at conversion and is forever

3. God wants us to be certain

4. Believing in Jesus is the only way5. Assurance comes from the

Word of God




Settled Assurance:

• If God saved you, you can’t lose your salvation

because it depends on God.

• If you saved yourself, you can lose it because it

depends on you.




Dangers in Believing you can Lose Your Salvation:

• Leads to fear and guilt• Leads to uncertainty of forgiven sins

• Leads to fear at moment of death

• Tends to produce legalistic faith• Puts focus on performance instead of Christ

• May lead to despair

•

May make you hypercritical• Keeps you from growing

• Makes Christian life unstable

• Takes the “Good News” out

because you can’t be sure




Benefits of Proclaiming the Promise of Eternal Life:

• Puts the focus on God and salvation, not on us

• Provides a way to live with new confidence

• Gives real hope at the moment of death

• Gives proper motivation to pray for sinning believers

• Builds the Christian life on love and hope, not fear

• Produces a life of faith and obedience to God

• Puts the “Good News” back in the Gospel

• Helps us get back up when we fall

• Points us to heaven and

eternal reward
