• Reduced the proportion of people living on less than $1.25 per day from 50 to 22 per cent
• Reduced the proportion of under-5 children underweight from 35 to 24 per cent, but it is still slow

• Because of the region’s large population it is also home to a high proportion of the developing world’s deprived people
