Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Good Day
Welcome to UMT Marine Natural Research Station, Pulau Bidong. It hoped that this flipbook would provide all visitors with more information relating to the UMT MarineNatural Research Station, Pulau Bidong. This book contains important informationrelating to the station’s location, the facilities provided, the activity that could becarried out and the safety measure, the processes took to enter the station and therules and regulations.
In line with the research station main roles to facilitate the teaching and learningprocess and research generally for marine activities, the research station managementhoped that all the facilities provided could be use optimally.
Other than that, the management also opened an opportunities to the visitor to carryout a suitable outdoor activities in Pulau Bidong such as scuba activity, snorkelling andjungle tracking.
We are very pleased to welcome all visitors to Pulau Bidong in hope that all visitorscould enjoy the beauty and at the same time be surrounded by the nature in the UMTMarine Natural Research Station, Pulau Bidong.
➢Located at the South China Sea ± 8 nautical milesfrom east of Merang beach
➢The island has ± 203 hectare land
➢According to locals, Pulau Bidong or known asBidong Laut has twin which is situated at a hill onthe main land of Lembah Bidong known as BidongDarat
➢Some of the nearby island near Pulau Bidong arePulau Karah, Pulau Yu Besar, Pulau Yu Kecil, PulauGeluk and Pulau Tengkorak
➢ There are three main access to Pulau Bidongwhich are :
i. From Merang Jetty (15 – 20 minutes through speed boat)
ii. From Kuala Terengganu (45 minutes through speed boat)
iii. From Pulau Redang (15 – 20 minutes through speed boat)
➢ Pulau Bidong does not have any permanentresidents unlike any other island in Malaysia
➢ Pulau Bidong is not one of the Taman LautMalaysia gazetted island
➢ Pulau Bidong is one of the traditional stopoverfor fisherman to shelter from the storm and toget fresh water source
➢ Any form of permanent structure for commercialpurpose is not allowed at Pulau Bidong
➢ Trip to Pulau Bidong is a daily trip
• Pulau Bidong is a historical island that was usedas the refugees camp for Vietnamese peoplethat is known as “Orang Hanyut Vietnam (OHV)”in the year of 1978-1991
• During the period where Pulau Bidong has beendeclared as OHV Placement Centres, there areabout 252,390 refugees living on the island
• Pulau Bidong has been handed back to the StateGovernment on the 30 November 1991
• Terengganu Museum has been assigned by theState Government of Terengganu to monitorPulau Bidong

Station, Pulau Bidong islocated on the 1,622 hectareland (lot 284)
➢ West part of Pulau Bidongwhich is also known as PasirCina beach
➢ Open : May to September
➢ Closed : November to February (depends on Monsoon season)
➢ Station infrastructure development was divided into two phase which is :

time • This area can also be use as prayer area

GENERAL
Station cleanliness is a responsibility by all visitors
FOOD WASTE
Food waste and waste that can be integrate in short
time should be throw in the places provided.

MANAGEMENT
1. Garbage or any waste that is hard to integrate like glass, plastic, fiber etc. should be
brought back to the mainland.
2. Minimize detergent usage and only allowed at the
provided area to take care of the coral reef health and the
marine organisms
3. Any chemical waste should be handle properly in the area
provided

✓ Location for research by students from local and international
because of the combination of land and water ecosystem in
Pulau Bidong

✓ Diving - offered colorful coral reefs and fishes that makes the
island one of the most preferred spot for diver in Terengganu

snorkel

license compulsory dive
✓ Safety rule for a group of student, that has the maximum
capacity of 12 student, the group must be monitored by :
- 1 Instructor
- 2 Dive master

animals that inhabit the forest
✓ Visit the Boatmen Memorial as an important history of Bidong
Island

RULE AND REGULATION

➢ All the activities that will be carried out at the UMT Marine Natural Research Station, Pulau
Bidong needs the approval from UMT (Centre of Research and Field Services) first before the
activities could be carried out in Pulau Bidong.
➢ All visitor are submit to the rule and regulation as follows :

- PROPERTY
❑ All visitors are responsible for all theequipment used
❑ Any damage to the equipment and UMTMarine Natural Research Station, Pulau Bidongproperty, must be reported immediately to theofficer on duty
❑ UMT will not be responsible for any damagemade or any loss of personal belonging
- PERSONAL
❑ Any problems faced by visitor must be reportedto the officer on duty immediately
❑ All incidents that occurred on individual orgroup is under their own responsibilities
2. ACTIVITIES RULES
❑ Visitor must first obtain the approval from the officer on duty, before carrying out other activities than the activities that has been approved
❑ All visitor not allowed to disturb or take any life creature whether alive or dead (on land or in the water) except with permission
❑ All night activities must be carried out in a group
❑ Water activity can only be carried out from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm except, with the permission from the officer on duty
❑ Bonfire is totally forbidden
❑ Visitor must submit to all instructions written and shown from time to time
(This rule and regulation has been approved by Management of KUSTEM in a meeting on 30 June 2004)

Only traditional fishing technique
is allowed to catch fish around the
island
Divers are strictly not allowed to use spear gun or sling fishing around coastal
area of research station
Not allowed fish feeding.
Tips:
When near the corals area, point fins upwards and fin
gently using the frog-kick style
Do not kick, kneel, stand, step or anchoring on corals as this
may damage them
Visitors are not allowed to collect or capture any marine
resources whether dead or alive. from this station without any permission from the officer
