BULLDOGS BACK HOME FOR THANKSGIVING WEEKEND DOGFIGHT WITH ST. CLOUD STATEHOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: After a four-week absence, the University of Minnesota Duluth will finally return home this Friday and Saturday (Nov. 23-24) to square off with St. Cloud State University in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. The puck drops at 7:37 p.m. Friday and 7:07 p.m. the following night at AMSOIL Arena (6,737) in downtown Duluth.
THE RECORDS: The Bulldogs, who are mired in a seven-game winless funk (0-5-2), own a 2-6-2 overall record and an 0-4-2 WCHA mark while St. Cloud State is 6-4-0 in all games and 4-2-0 in league play.
HOW THEY RANK: Here is how UMD and St. Cloud State stacked up in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls:

THE COACHES: The runnerup for the 2010-11 Spencer Penrose Award (American Hockey Coaches Associa-tion NCAA Division I Coach of the Year) and recipient of that honor in 2003-04, Scott Sandelin is in his 13th season behind the UMD bench where he has compiled a 219-216-60 overall record -- including a 97-55-23 mark (for a .620 winning percentage) since the 2008-09 opener. Besides capturing the school’s first NCAA championship two years ago, his Bulldogs have posted four consecutive 22-win seasons while advancing to four NCAA tournaments (2004, 2009, 2011 and 2012), two Frozen Fours (2004 and 2011) and seven of the past 10 WCHA Final Five playoff events. During the course of the 2011-12 season, the Bulldogs set a club record by going unbeaten in 17 straight games and were ranked first in both major weekly polls (USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey

Magazine for a program-best nine consecutive weeks. In March 2009, UMD became the first play-in game participant to ever claim the Final Five title and, later that spring, strung together a school-record six-game postseason winning streak before it fell to Miami Uni-versity 2-1 in the NCAA West Regional final. Nine years ago, Sandelin, 48, turned UMD into a NCAA Frozen Four participant for the first time in nearly a gen-eration, marshaling his troops to their most victories (they were 28-13-4 overall) and highest WCHA finish (second place on a 19-7-2 mark) since 1992-93. For his efforts, the Hibbing, Minn., native was chosen the WCHA Coach of the Year as well as the national coach of the year by both insidecollegehockey.com and uscho.com. In 2002-03, Sandelin’s charges went 22-15-5 overall and captured fifth place in the WCHA with a 14-10-4 mark while experiencing the great-est one-season turnaround of any league club that winter. One year earlier, he guided UMD to a 13-24-1 record in all games -- nearly doubling the number of victories from the previous season (7-28-4). Sandelin officially signed on as a member of the Bulldog staff on March 31, 2000 following six years of assistant coaching deployment at North Dakota. Prior to joining the Fighting Sioux (who won two NCAA titles during his tenure), Sandelin spent the 1993-94 season as the head coach of the Fargo-Moorhead Junior Kings of the Junior Elite Hockey League after working in that same capacity (and doubling as general manager) the previous winter with the American Hockey Association’s Fargo-Moorhead Express. He capped off his four-year playing career at North Dakota in 1985-86 by be-ing named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. An All-WCHA first team pick and an All-American second team selection as a senior, Sandelin went on to play seven years of professional hockey, which included National Hockey League stints with the Montreal Canadiens (1986-88), Philadelphia Flyers (1990-91) and Minnesota North Stars (1991-92). Sandelin, one of just two current WCHA coaches to do time in the NHL, was the Montreal Canadiens’ second-round pick in the 1982 NHL draft (40th choice overall). He served as Team USA’s head coach at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships, directing that club to a fourth-place finish, and was an assistant coach for the U.S. at that same event last winter.
Bob Motzko (St. Cloud State, 1987), a two-time WCHA Co-Coach of the Year honoree, is in his eighth season at his alma mater and has a 143-113-34 overall re-cord -- including a 14-7-3 lifetime mark against UMD -- to show for it. The Huskies have made five WCHA Final Five appearances and earned two NCAA playoff berths during his tenure. Motzko, who skated with the Huskies for a pair of seasons (1983-85), joined the St. Cloud State staff in 2005-06 after spending the previous four winters serving as an assistant on the University of Minnesota staff. Prior to that, he was the head coach/general manager for the United States Hockey League’s Sioux Falls Stampede from 1998-2001. His college coaching resume also includes stints as an assistant coach at Miami University (1991-93 and 1994-98), the University of Denver (1993-94) and St. Cloud State (1986-87), where he worked under the legendary Herb Brooks.
THE RIVALRY: UMD and St. Cloud State have collided on 102 previous occasions in a rivalry which stretches back to the 1946-47 season. The Huskies hold a 55-39-8 lead in the all-time series and are 52-35-7
versus the Bulldogs since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 1987-88. St. Cloud State took three of four points from the Bulldogs in the two clubs’ only meetings last year (a 2-1 win and 3-3 tie on March 2-3 in the regular season finales in St. Cloud, Minn. ), but was 1-2-1 against UMD the previous season -- all at AMSOIL Arena. That included being swept in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs (4-2 and 3-2 in triple overtime on March 11-12, 2011).
LAST WEEKEND: The Bulldogs salvaged just one WCHA point in their two-game road set with North Dakota last weekend. Both outings required overtime with the hosts taking the rematch 4-3, scoring with only 34 seconds remaining in the extra session, after UMD had rallied to earn a 4-4 tie one night earlier. Freshman left winger Austin Farley scored twice while senior right winger Mike Seidel and senior defenseman Drew Olson had UMD’s other two goals in the opener. Seidel and rookie center Tony Cameranesi both struck for a goal and an assist the following evening for the Bulldogs, who took a 3-1 lead into the intermission and led 3-2 with 16 minutes to go in regulation.
St. Cloud State has been idle since trading WCHA wins with North Dakota on Nov. 9-10 in St. Cloud, rebound-ing from a 3-0 setback in Game 1 by throttling North Dakota 5-2 one night later.
WCHA FORECAST: In their annual preseason poll, the WCHA head coaches collectively forecasted a sixth-place league finish for UMD in 2012-13. The University of Minnesota (11 first-place votes and 121 points) was tabbed as the team to beat followed by North Dakota (one first-place vote and 110 pts.), the Uni-versity of Denver (91 pts.), St. Cloud State (90 pts.) and the University of Wisconsin (70 pts.). UMD, which garnered 69 points, checked in at No. 5 for the second year in a row in the 94X WCHA Media Poll.
AYE, AYE CAPTAIN: Left winger Cody Danberg is being entrusted with the team captaincy duties for the 69th edition of UMD hockey while a pair of fellow seniors -- right winger Keegan Flaherty and defenseman Drew Olson -- are serving as assistant team captains.

THAT’S ALL FOLKS: UMD, which has been a member of the WCHA since the 1965-66 season, and St. Cloud State will both hook up with the new eight-team National Collegiate Hockey Conference next fall. This weekend is the only times these two clubs will meet during the regular season.
TOP ‘DOG: Senior right winger Mike Seidel, who has picked up at least one point in nine of UMD’s 10 games to date (he was blanked in UMD’s 2-0 loss to Wisconsin last month), continues to pace the Bulldogs in scoring with seven goals and five assists. Those seven goals are bettered by only seven other NCAA II players and one WCHA combatant -- Chris Knowlton of Denver with eight. Seidel, whose four power play tallies are tops in the nation (he shares that honor with seven others), also currently owns a career-best four-game goal scoring streak.
THEY GOT THEIR MONEY’S WORTH: When UMD and St. Cloud State last met in Duluth (March 12, 2011), it took three overtimes and 101:13 of warfare before the Bulldogs prevailed 3-2 to clinch the best-of-three WCHA playoff series in two games. Current Bulldog senior center Jake Hendrickson assisted on Mike Con-nolly’s game-winner, which came on UMD’s 60th shot on goal and 88:12 after the Bulldogs had last scored.
A ROOKIE ON THE RISE: Center Tony Cameranesi, who like Mike Seidel will bring a five-game scoring streak into this weekend’s series with St. Cloud State, cur-rently is tied for third in points among all NCAA rook-ies with 10 (four goals and six assists). The Toronto Maple Leaf drafteee has also launched the second most on-target shots (3.70 a night) of any WCHA newcomer, taking a backseat only to North Dakota’s Rocco Grimaldi (3.80).
SOME TOUGH SLEDDING: In terms of winning percentage (.300 on a 2-6-2 record), UMD has gotten off to its slowest start since head coach Scott Sandelin’s debut season (1999-2000) when the Bulldogs were 1-9-0 through the opening 10 games of the year.
THE SHORT END OF THE STICK: UMD has generated just one shorthanded goal (by senior right winger Keegan Flaherty at Michigan Tech University on Dec. 2, 2011) since the start of last season, but has also ceded only two shorties of its own over that same period with both of those coming in 2011-12 (versus Michigan Tech on Jan. 27, 2012 and the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 8, 2011).
FREE HOCKEY: Even with the loss this past Saturday night in North Dakota, UMD is still unbeaten in 37 of its last 42 overtime games (15-5-22; 0-1-2 this winter) stretching back to the start of the 2008-09 season. Among active Bulldogs, only two have an overtime goal

BOMBS AWAY: UMD was credited with a season-high 46 shots on goal last Friday night at North Dakota and 77 on the weekend. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 33.0 shots on goal per night, the 10th highest figure in the country.
BULLDOG BITES: UMD hasn’t done battle in its own building since skating to a 2-2 draw with the University of Wisconsin four weeks ago (Oct. 27). In 35 lifetime engagements at AMSOIL Arena, the Bulldogs are 20-11-4 (2-1-1 versus St. Cloud State) and went 14-5-1 in 2011-12, its first full season of occupancy in the $80-million facility. .. Last Saturday’s 4-3 overtime defeat at the hands North Dakota marked the first time since the 2011 WCHA Final Five (vs. Bemidji State University) that the Bulldogs lost a game in which they led heading into the third period. They had been 20-0-3 in that situation prior to that. On the flip side, UMD is a mere 1-19-2 (0-9-1 in 2011-12 and 0-3-0 this season) when trailing at the second intermission during that same stretch. The last time UMD overcame a third-period deficit to win was on Nov. 10, 2010 when it erased a 2-1 Michigan Tech advantage by scoring four times in the final 20 min-utes of regulation on its way to a 5-3 home triumph ... Freshman left winger Austin Farley potted a pair goals – both coming a little over three minutes apart in the second period -- in at North Dakota last Friday night, giving him eight points on the season. That places him in the No. 3 spot on UMD’s scoring charts (behind Mike Seidel and Tony Cameranesi) ... The Bulldogs are the nation’s most penalized team at the moment, averaging 20.6 minutes of infraction time an outing ... Senior right winger Keegan Flaherty has now skated in 91 consecutive games, the longest ironman streak among active Bulldogs while two other seniors -- defenseman Wade Bergman and Jake Hendrickson -- have both made 75 successive appearances (going back to Dec. 30, 2010) ... UMD has cashed in on five of 17 opportunities with the man advantage over the past four games (29.4 percent) and now ranks fourth among WCHA clubs in power play efficiency (23.5 percent) ... Center Caleb Hebert hasn’t produced a point in the last seven outings, the longest scoring drought (by five games) of his collegiate career. One year ago, he finished with highest scoring harvest (33 points) of any UMD freshman en route to being named the team’s Rookie of the Year ... Since Feb. 26, 2010, the Bulldogs have lost two or more games in a row only three times with the longest skid during that stretch being a three-outing skid between Oct. 8-16, 2011. The last time UMD endured seven or more straight games without a victory was between Dec. 28, 2005 and Feb. 3, 2006 when it went 0-7-1 ... Senior team captain Cody Danberg, who, because of injuries had taken part in only one game over the previous two seasons (the 2011-12 opener with Notre Dame at AMSOIL Arena), is the first sixth-year senior to ever play at UMD ... The Bulldogs haven’t been shut out in a regular season road outing in nearly six years (2-0 vs. Bemidji State on Jan. 5, 2007), but they’ve come up empty on six regular season occasions in Duluth over that same stretch ... In his two home appear-ances with the Bulldogs, freshman Matt McNeely is
