Completedinearly2017,theDesignBuildingattheUniversityofMassachusettsAmherstisthefirstofitskindintheU.S.Atfourstoriesand87,500sf,thismasstimberprojectfeaturesaglued-laminated(glulam)timbercolumn-and-beamframe,masstimberlateralforce-resistingsystem,hybridcross-laminatedtimber(CLT)/concretefloorsystem,andunconventionalcantileveredforms.

Thispresentationwillhighlighttwoaspectsoftheproject:thedesignprocesswillbediscussedbytheprincipalarchitectandtheconstructionandoccupancyphaseswillbereviewedbyanassociateprofessorwhowasclosetotheprocessandnowworksinthebuilding.Fromcodeapprovalthroughoccupancy,thissessionwilladdresstheprocessandcollaborationrequiredtoseethisgroundbreakingstructuretofruitioninasteel-dominatedconstructionindustry.
