Thurman began her career as a fashion model at age 15,[9]and signed with the agency ClickModels. Her early mod-eling credits included Glamour and the December 1985and May 1986 covers of British Vogue.[10] She made hermovie debut in 1988, appearing in four lms that year. Her rst two were the high school comedy Johnny BeGood and teen thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight. She hada small role in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, playing the goddess Venus alongside Oliver Reed's Vul-can; during her entrance she briey appears nude, in anhomage to Botticelli's The Birth of Venus. But theres some-thing else. Shes more than a little haunted.[11]

    2.2 199093: Career prominence

In 1990, Thurman appeared with Fred Ward and Mariade Medeiros in the sexually provocative drama Henry &June, the rst lm to receive an NC-17 rating. Partly be-cause many American newspapers refused to advertiselms with the new rating, it did not get wide release inthe United States, but the lm won her some good no-tices. • 2 2 CAREER

Cowgirls Get the Blues. It was a critical and nancial dis-appointment; Thurman was nominated for a Worst Ac-tress Razzie. The Washington Post described her act-ing as shallow, writing that, Thurmans strangely passivecharacterization doesn't go much deeper than drawlingand exing her prosthetic thumbs.[13] She also starredopposite Robert De Niro in the drama Mad Dog andGlory, another box oce disappointment. Later thatyear, Thurman auditioned for Stanley Kubrick while hewas casting for the unmade lmWartime Lies. Her agentsaid she described working with Kubrick as a really badexperience.[14]

2.3 199498: Continued successAfter Mad Dog and Glory, Thurman auditioned for theQuentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction, which grossedover $107 million on a budget of only $8 million.[15]The Washington Post wrote that Thurman was serenelyunrecognizable in a black wig, [and] is marvelous as azoned-out gangsters girlfriend.[16] Thurman was nomi-nated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar the followingyear. She became one of Tarantinos favorite actresses tocast; he toldTimemagazine in 2003 that she was up therewith Garbo and Dietrich in goddess territory.[17]

1996 would see Thurman in two moderately successfullms, the rst of which was Beautiful Girls, where sheplayed the female lead and love interest of Timothy Hut-ton and was supported with a high-prole cast (for thattime) of Mira Sorvino, Martha Plimpton, and NataliePortman. The lm was well received by the critics for thescript and acting, particularly that of Hutton and Port-man. It performed moderately well at the box oce.Thurman also starred opposite Janeane Garofalo in themoderately successful 1996 romantic comedy The TruthAbout Cats & Dogs as a ditzy blonde model. In 1997, shestarred opposite her future husband Ethan Hawke in thescience ction lm Gattaca. Although Gattaca was not asuccess at the box oce, it drew many positive reviewsand became successful on the home video market.[18]Some critics were not as impressed with Thurman, suchas The Los Angeles Times, which wrote that she was asemotionally uninvolved as ever.[19]

Her next role was Poison Ivy in Batman & Robin, thefourth of the series. Her performance received mixed re-views, and critics compared her to Mae West. The NewYork Times wrote, like Mae West, she mixes true femi-ninity with the winking womanliness of a drag queen.[20]A similar comparison was made by the Houston Chron-icle: Thurman, to arrive at a '40s femme fatale, some-times seems to be doing Mae West by way of JessicaRabbit.[21] The next year brought The Avengers, anothermajor nancial and critical op. CNN described her asso distanced you feel like youre watching her throughthe wrong end of a telescope.[22] She received RazzieAward nominations for both lms. She closed out 1998with Les Misrables, a lm version of Victor Hugo's novel

of the same name, directed by Bille August, in which sheplayed Fantine. On his review of the lm, Roger Ebertsaid that Thurmans performance is the best element ofthe movie.

    2.4 19982002: Hiatus

After the birth of her rst child in 1998, Thurman tooka break from acting to concentrate on motherhood. Hernext roles were in low-budget and television lms, includ-ing Vatel, Tape, in which she appeared with then husbandEthan Hawke and for which she was nominated for theIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female, and Chelsea Walls, directed by Hawke. She would win a Golden Globe award for her acting inHBO cable movie Hysterical Blindness; she was also oneof the executive producers. Thurman played a New Jer-sey woman in the 1980s searching for romance. The SanFrancisco Chronicle review said, Thurman so commitsherself to the role, eyes blazing and body akimbo, thatyou start to believe that such a creature could existanexquisite-looking woman so spastic and needy that sherepulses regular Joes. Thurman has bent the role to herwill.[23]

In 2000, she narrated the John Moran opera Book of theDead (2nd Avenue) at New Yorks Public Theater.

    2.5 2003present

In 2003 Thurman co-starred in John Woo's Paycheck, which was only moderately successful with critics and atthe box oce.It would beQuentin TarantinosKill Billwhich relaunchedher career. She played assassin Beatrix Kiddo, out for re-venge against her former lover. Tarantino wrote the partspecically for her. He cited Thurman as his muse while

writing the lm, and gave her joint credit for the charac-ter, whom the two conceived on the set of Pulp Fictionfrom the sole image of a bride covered in blood. Produc-tion was delayed for several months after Thurman be-came pregnant, as Tarantino refused to recast the part.[24]The lm took nine months to shoot, and was lmed inve dierent countries. The role was also her most de-manding, and she spent three months training in martialarts, swordsmanship, and Japanese.[25] It was originallyset to be released as one lm. However due to its over4-hour running time, it was ultimately released in twoparts and became a cult classic[26] and scored highly withcritics. Thurman was nominated for a Golden Globe forboth entries, plus three MTV Movie Awards for Best Fe-male Performance and two for Best Fight. Rolling Stonelikened her to an avenging angel out of a 1940s Holly-wood melodrama.[27]

At the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival

The inspirations for The Bride were several B-movie ac-tion heroines. Thurmans main inspiration for the rolewas the title character of Coy (played by Pam Grier)and the character of Gloria Swenson from Gloria (playedby Gena Rowlands). She said that the two characters aretwo of the only women I've ever seen be truly women[while] holding a weapon.[28] Coy was screened forThurman by Tarantino prior to beginning production onthe lm, to help her model the character.[24]

By 2005, Thurman was commanding a salary of $12.5million per lm. Her rst lm of the year was Be Cool,

the sequel to 1995s Get Shorty, which reunited her withher Pulp Fiction castmate John Travolta. In the lm, sheplayed the widow of a deceased music business executive. The lm received poor reviews, and came in below ex-pectations at the box oce. In 2005, she starred in PrimewithMeryl Streep, playing a woman in her late thirties ro-mancing a man in his early twenties. Thurmans last lmof the year was a remake of The Producers in which sheplayed Ulla, a Swedish stage actress hoping to win a partin a new Broadway musical. Originally, the producersof the lm planned to have another singer dub in Thur-mans musical numbers, but she was eager to do her ownvocals.[29] She is credited for her songs in the credits. Thelm was considered a bomb at the box oce, but manypraised Thurmans eorts, including A. O. Scott of TheNew York Times who said: Uma Thurman as a would-beactress is the one bit of genuine radiance in this aggres-sively and pointlessly shiny, noisy spectacle.[30]

With a successful lm career, Thurman once again be-came a desired model. Cosmetics company Lancmeselected her as its spokeswoman. It also named severalshades of lipstick after her, though they were sold onlyin Asia. In 2005, Thurman became a spokeswoman forthe French fashion house Louis Vuitton. On February 7,2006, she was also named a knight of the Ordre des Artset des Lettres of France for outstanding achievement inthe eld of art and literature.InMay 2006, Thurman bought the lm rights to the Frank

Brooks, but the director was changed and Thurmanwas no longer part of the cast. In July 2006, she starredopposite Luke Wilson in My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Once again she was well-received, butthe lm was not.In February 2008, she starred opposite Colin Firth andJerey Dean Morgan in The Accidental Husband, a ro-mantic comedy about a woman who nds herself marriedwhile engaged to another man.
