Opium Wars The opium conflict had began as

early as the 1830s, when the British East India Company discovered that the Chinese people would buy it in large quantities once addicted. The British had become the major drug-trafficking criminal organization in the world, and China had evidently become one of its victims. The use of opium in China was soon strictly controlled. Some Chinese officials believed that the opium trade would benefit the Chinese more because the British were infatuated with Chinese silks and tea. Arguing that trade connections were necessary, these officials advocated the import of opium. However, they were simply interested in their own individual profits.

BOXER REBELLION

Boxer Rebellion (1900): Beginning in 1898, groups of peasants in northern China began to band together into a secret society known as I-ho ch'üan ("Righteous and Harmonious Fists"), called the "Boxers" by Western press. Members of the secret society practiced boxing and calisthenic rituals (hence the nickname, the "Boxers") which they believed would make them impervious to bullets.

MEIJI RESTORATION

The emperor emerged as a national symbol of unity in the midst of reforms that were much more radical than had been envisioned. The first reform was the promulgation of the Charter Oath in 1868, a general statement of the aims of the Meiji leaders to boost morale and win financial support for the new government.
