The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is located in the picturesque province of KwaZulu-Natal. It is a teaching and research-led university with a proud and rich heritage of academic excellence. In 2010 our province celebrated 100 years of Higher Education – a centenary of scholarship, innovation and community engagement. This vast wealth of knowledge production lies at the heart of the university’s success as one of the top institutions on the African continent and one of only three South African Universities listed amongst the top 500 Universities in the world according to the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU). The Webometrics Rankings released on 2 August 2013, rated UKZN as number one in Africa for the impact of its web presence and relevance to society.

By international standards, UKZN is a very large and complex institution, with over 40 000 students spread across five campuses (Edgewood, Howard College, Medical School, Pietermaritzburg and Westville). It spans two centres, one in the coastal city of Durban and environs, and the other in the provincial capital of Pietermaritzburg, some 80 km inland.

The greater Durban area is one of the fastest growing centres of population in the world. It is also the second largest commercial and industrial centre in South Africa with a wide range of industries covering commodities, manufacturing and services. The port handles the largest volume of shipping and general cargo on the African continent. The University has a unique opportunity to exploit these locational factors in developing its strategic thrusts.

UKZN Extended Learning (UEL) is committed to enrichment through lifelong learning, by providing high quality credit and non-credit bearing short courses and academic programmes in collaboration with schools and colleges of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

In a fast changing environment, developing relevant and useful skills and knowledge and the capacity to deliver results, is more important than ever. To assist you with your personal development needs, UEL is pleased to announce an exciting range of short courses to be offered in 2014.

Our courses are designed using the very best methods by combining content, based on both tried and tested results, and recent cutting edge research, with interactive experiential teaching and learning from local and international faculty and guest speakers.

I was fortunate to achieve very good results at the end of matric and I believed that I would have no hesitation getting accepted into university, little did I know that my mathematics mark would be the hurdle between me and varsity. The Advanced Maths Course was my saving grace and it has given not just me but the other students that did the course with me a chance to be great. I am currently at the Pietermaritzburg Campus doing LLB, and this would not have been possible without the help I acquired from the two professors and the entire Extended Learning team. I shall remain forever grateful for what the course has given me.
