Thank you for attending this year’s UK@CERN event.

Today marks the first time that this event has been held entirely virtually and we are excited to see what new opportunities the online platform might bring. This event provides an opportunity for UK companies to meet and talk to CERN procurement staff, representatives from DIT and STFC and each other, with the aim of boosting awareness of UK companies and increasing involvement in future tenders.

We look forward to meeting you over the course of the event and hope you will find the experience instructive.

Introduction

Page 4: UK@CERN - prod5.assets-cdn.io

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, based in Geneva and the largest particle physics laboratory in the World with an average annual budget of 1.1 billion Swiss Francs (CHF), offers many opportunities for UK companies to supply the products and services it requires.

It spends in the region of £350M annually on procurement. Whilst some of this budget is spent on the development of new technologies and new facilities, CERN’s requirements are not all high tech. For example, CERN is a large site with around 14,000 people working there and so it has civil engineering requirements to maintain and develop infrastructure. CERN has broad requirements ranging from computing equipment to manage the vast amounts of data produced by the Laboratory’s experiments, to cables and stationary as well financial and consulting services.

As the UK is a CERN Member State and a major contributor, CERN tries to assist the UK in getting a proper return on investment through contracts placed with UK companies. STFC manages the subscription costs for the UK and as part of this the STFC Business Opportunities team act as the UK Industrial Liaison Office. The team supports UK companies who are interested in working with CERN.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a world-leading multi-disciplinary science organisation which operates as part of UK Research & Innovation. It seeks to deliver economic, societal, scientific and international benefits to the UK and its people through a number of research and innovation programmes. Part of this endeavour comes through STFC’s investment in large international science facilities across Europe and the world, including CERN, ESS, ILL ESRF, XFEL and the SKA. STFC manages the subscription costs for the UK and the STFC Business Opportunities team acts as the UK Industrial Liaison Office for these facilities.

Our team works to increase the return on investment to the UK by helping UK companies to bid for, and win contracts issued by CERN. This service is provided for free, with assistance available in the form of tender access, liaison with CERN procurement and if needs be, contract discussions. Companies which are interested in receiving tender information from CERN or other international facilities may sign up to STFC’s database for free and will subsequently be considered for future tenders. Tenders from CERN encompass a broad range of sectors, including electronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials and composites, computing, consultancy, cryogenics, magnetics and more. As such, there is work available that will appeal to a number of UK companies.

An introduction to DITThe Department for International Trade (DIT) is the UK Government’s international economic department, responsible for:n Bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to

break down barriers to trade and investment, and help businesses succeed.

n Delivering a new trade policy framework for the UK. n Promoting British trade and investment across the world.n Building the global appetite for British goods and services.

DIT has staff working in all regions across the UK complemented by overseas teams based in British Embassies.

Our objective is to connect companies to relevant opportunities and make introductions to enable business to be done. We work closely with STFC and teams at CERN to organise UK@CERN and other events.

Participating in UK@CERN is one step on your journey. DIT staff at the British Embassy in Switzerland are ready to help you progress further. You are welcome to contact [email protected] at any time.
