Babies really do benefit

from having a comfortable,

supportive mattress in

their early years during the key

periods of spinal growth, so it’s

worth investing in the best you

can afford. In fact, so important is

sleep to baby’s development that

the mattress really should be one

of the first buying decisions you

make for the nursery. Here’s what

you need to know to make the right

choice for you and your baby.

n Always buy a new mattress

for each new baby. Apart from

the obvious hygiene benefits, a

secondhand mattress may well have

been compressed by the previous

baby’s weight so won’t provide the

firm, supportive and comfy surface

your baby needs at this time

n Choose a mattress that feels

firm rather than soft as your baby

needs to be properly supported

when asleep

n Always check the fit. Assemble

the cot first then measure for

the mattress. The gap between

mattress and cot should be no

more than 3cm to prevent tiny

arms and legs from getting trapped

n Look for a mattress that is at

least 10cm thick – anything thinner

than this won’t provide enough

support for baby’s head, neck

and spine.

Choose a neutral colour unless you

know the sex of your baby: cream,

green, lilac and yellow all work

equally well for boys and girls.

Always include somewhere to

change baby, like a specially

designed unit or cot-top changer.

And make sure it’s the right height

for you – you don’t want a bad back

with a new baby!

Include a comfy chair – night-time

feeds are so much easier when you

are relaxed and properly supported.

Planning around radiators and

windows, as well as putting up

blackout blinds, helps to avoid

overheating issues. Get a room

thermometer to help keep the

temperature at a steady 18C (65F).

Make sure your cot has adjustable

mattress positions so you can alter

the height as your baby grows.
