As No. 1 Kentucky (6-0) prepares for itsnext game Monday night against Illinois

State, it does so with uncertainty at its pointguard position. Namely, who will play it?

After sophomore Tyler Ulis went downwith a hyperextended right elbow on Fridayin Miami against South Florida, the Wildcatspoint guard could do nothing more than cheer

on his teammates on the UK bench with hisarm in a sling. Now, the question turns to willhe play Monday, and if not then, what aboutThursday at UCLA?

I dont think hell practice (Sunday), butits day to day, head coach John Calipari said.Hes moving it.

The Wildcats still have two five-star, poten-tial first round NBA draft picks who they canplay at the position, so its not as though the

cupboard is bare by any stretch of the imagi-nation, but without Ulis, the Cats are undoubt-edly a different team.

When Ulis went down with his injury with5:27 to play in the first half, the Wildcats pro-ceeded to go on a 12-0 run to close out thehalf, and opened the second half on 13-5 run.But by the end of the second half, Kentuckyand South Florida had each scored 42 points,which Calipari said speaks to the consistencyof Ulis as the teams floor general.

And without Tyler, now, you gotta under-stand, the last six minutes of that half and whatwe did the first five or six minutes of the secondhalf, that was without Tyler and we were reallygood, Coach Cal said. Just, they couldnt sus-tain it, and thats what Tyler does. Tyler just keepscoming and he does not stop and hes not gon-na make mistakes to let another team get backin the game. Thats the difference and thats theexperience.

Ulis is averaging 4.3 assists per game, andcurrently has a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio, whichis modest by his standards after a 3.6 mark oneyear ago. But if you take out Ulis uncharacter-istically poor season-opener against Albany, andhis 14 minutes against USF prior to going downwith injury, the Chicago native is dishing out 5.5assists per game and has an assist-to-turnover ra-

tio of 4.4.I think hes the best point guard in the coun-

try, freshman forward Skal Labissiere said. Ob-viously, he runs our team, so hes very importantto us.

In addition to not practicing Sunday, CoachCal said they would hold Ulis out against IllinoisState if they needed to. He also said that, know-ing Ulis, hell want to play Monday. If Ulis wereto miss the game, Isaiah Briscoe and Jamal Mur-ray would both take on an added role in guidingthe team.

Against USF, Briscoe had a strong stat line ofsix points, a season-high seven assists and six re-bounds, but Coach Cal didnt like his shot selec-tion (3 for 9) and how he seemed to avoid contact(took just one free throw). Murray led the Cats in

scoring with a season-high 21 points, but Calipariwants him to get to the foul line more, where hesan 88.2 percent shooter.

Illinois State will come down and they playa little bit like Arkansas: theyll just trap you fromdifferent areas of the court, Calipari said. Well,first of all, we havent played against it yet. Now,Tyler has, but none of these other guys have.Thats one thing. And the second thing is, they

spread the court and they have five men out. Soall five guys are out, which means everybody canget beat on the dribble. Thats an issue for us, be-cause we got a couple guys that have yet to keepa guy in front of them. So they may find that guyand thats who they go after. We gotta figure outhow were playing. So its not that Im worriedabout Isaiah and Jamal and how theyllplay Dom(inique Hawkins) its notthat. Its that were playing a team that

plays a little different, that Tyler wouldhave no problem with, but these guysmay.

Hawkins is another player whocould see an uptick in minutes Mondayif Ulis were to sit out. Against SouthFlorida, the junior guard logged nineminutes, hit one of his two 3-point at-tempts, dished out an assist, had a stealand took a charge. Afterward, Calipa-ri said he liked what he saw from theRichmond, Ky., native, adding thatHawkins may be that elusive rotation-al guy hes been looking for all season.

It was only one game prior thatHawkins lasted less than a minute onthe floor before being taken back outdue to running under a screen on de-fense. For Hawkins to see more playingtime, Calipari said its all about defen-sive effort, defensive intensity and fo-cus. If Hawkins can do that, as he didagainst USF, there could be more play-ing time available.

Hes a great kid, Calipari said.What I want for him, to be honest, re-ally doesnt matter. Its what he wantsand what hes willing to do to get that.Theres pressure on these kids. Like you

cant go in and just not guard. You cant go in and

be so anxious that youre tight. You cant do thathere. Youve got to play. And its on them to do it.And they know it.

Whether Kentucky does or does not haveUlis, the Cats will face an Illinois State team that,despite its 3-4 record, pushed No. 2 Marylandto the limit on Nov. 24. The Redbirds trailed byjust one at halftime and led with less than eightminutes to play in the game.

Weve got this one tomorrow and it might

be without Tyler, Coach Cal said. If it is withoutTyler, its a different game for us. We dont know ifa game is close who panics. And like I said, theyhad Maryland down two late in the game. Theyended up losing by 11, but it was only becauseMaryland made three 3s to end the game. So, thisteam is capable of beating us.

University of Kentucky womens basketballhead coach Matthew Mitchell earned his200th win at UK on Sunday afternoon as the No.12/11 Wildcats beat the Jackson State Lady Tigers92-24 in Memorial Coliseum.

Mitchell, who is in his ninth season at Ken-tucky and 12th season of being a head coach,is now 200-81 (.711) in his nine years at UK

and moves his overall record to 230-110 (.676)as a head coach. Mitchell became UKs all-timewinningest coach on March 4, 2013 after justsix seasons of coaching, and becomes the fifthUK basketball coach to eclipse 200 wins at UKjoining Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino andTubby Smith.

The margin of victory for UK was 68 pointson Sunday, its largest since a 60-point win overGrambling State in 2013.

Kentucky had four different runs of 10-0 ormore during the game, including a season-high22 straight points in the first half, which led theWildcats to a 47-17 lead at the half. The 30-pointlead at the half was UKs largest halftime lead ofthe season, as the Wildcats were led by EvelynAkhator in scoring, with 13 points and three re-bounds in the opening 20 minutes. The 13-pointperformance for the junior from Lagos, Nigeria

marked the fifth time in six games this season that

she had scored in double figures. Akhator endedthe game with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The20 points scored was a career high, and her thirddouble-double of the season.

UKs defense was also clicking on Sundayafter returning from Thanksgiving break, forcingthe Lady Tigers into a season-high 37 turnovers,scoring a season-high 42 of those points off ofturnovers. Defensively, Kentucky charted 28 de-fensive rebounds out of its total of 50 and only

committed eight personal fouls in the entire40-minute affair. In the final three periods, UKheld JSU to seven, four and three points afterjust a 10 point opening quarter. The 24 pointsallowed is the second-lowest in program history,one less than the 25 points allowed vs. Jackson-ville State in 2011.

Kentucky moves to 6-0 on the young sea-son, marking the fourth time in nine seasonsat UK that Mitchell has led UK to a 6-0 start.

The Wildcats will look to make it seven wins ina row to start the season on Wednesday, Dec.2 at Northern Kentucky. The game will start at7 p.m. ET from the BB&T Arena in HighlightHeights, Ky.

Blue and White

The University of Kentucky adopted blue andwhite as its official colors in 1892. UK studentshad first decided on blue and light yellow beforethe Kentucky-Centre football game Dec. 19, 1891.The yellow was soon dropped from the combina-tion and replaced by white.

The particular Kentucky shade of blue, closeto royal blue, was determined without ceremony.After settling on the base colors, a student posedthe logical question, What color blue? Letter-man Richard Stoll looked down at his necktie andraised it to the air. The vote was unanimous.

Wildcats Nickname

The official nickname for the University ofKentuckys athletics teams is Wildcats. The nick-name became synonymous with UK shortly after a6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909,on the road.

Commandant Carbusier, then head of the mili-tary department at old State University (UK), told a

group of students in a chapel service following thegame that the Kentucky football team had foughtlike wildcats.

Later the name Wildcats became more andmore popular among UK followers as well as withmembers of the media. As a result, the nicknamewas adopted by the University.

UK Dance Team

The University of Kentucky Dance Team helpsgenerate excitement and enthusiasm at Wildcat

athletics events. Under the tutelage of Dawn Dun-can Walters and assistant coach Andrea Masters,the dance team includes both Blue and Whitesquads. The team won its first national champion-ship at the 2005 national competition sponsoredby the United Spirit Association. It backed thatup with a second-place finish in 2006 and tookhome third at the 2007 championships. The 2010squad placed fifth in the Pom Division at UDA2010 Nationals.

Fan-tastic!The Kentucky cheerleaders, band and dance

team combine to entertain the nations largest andmost loyal fan base in college basketball. Sure,Ashley Judd, Tommy Lasorda, Muhammad Ali andBackstreet Boy Kevin Richardson steal the atten-tion, but those Big Blue stars are just a few of theCat fans in attendance at UK games. Its each andevery one of the many Kentucky fans who deservethe credit for helping the Wildcats lead the nation

in attendance 22 times since Rupp Arena opened

in 1976-77, including 14 of the last 15 years.And the tremendous fan base is not limited to

just Lexington. Each year, Kentucky fans flock toFreedom Hall in Louisville, to fill the arena withmore than 20,000 fans for an annual home game.

The Southeastern Conference Tournament?Well, it might as well be called the Kentucky Invi-tational. March Madness? Nearly the same result.

The nations largest media contingent followsthe Cats from start to finish simply because of thefans incessant appetite for information on theirWildcats.

Trademark SwooshOnly the best wear Nike. Kentucky not only

wears Nike, but is under an all-school contractwith the athletic apparel company. In 1997, UKsigned the contract with the popular makers ofthe trademark swoosh. Thanks to Nikes extensiveresearch and product development, UK student --athletes stay on the cutting edge of quality and

style with all of their gear.All 22 sports use Nike shoes and equipment,and over the course of the contract, the Wildcatswill receive millions of dollars worth of clothing,equipment and cash. The mens basketball teamhas been recognized by the apparel company asa Nike Elite team.

While clothing adorned with Kentucky was al-ready popular throughout the nation, thanks to Nikeand its international marketing reach, Kentuckysblue and white can now be found worldwide.

Cawoods Court

Prior to the UK-Louisville game on Dec.29, 2001, the court at Rupp Arena was namedCawoods Court in honor of Cawood Ledford,the beloved Voice of the Wildcats for 39 years(1953-92). Ledford passed away in September2001, after a long battle with cancer.

The ceremonies included the unveiling of alogo courtside, not far from where Ledford calledthe action. Also included in the ceremony were do-

nations by two area businesses to the Cawood Led-ford Scholarship Fund, established in 1992 to assistformer student-athletes in obtaining their degrees.

The Wildcat

The Wildcat mascot originated during the1976-77 academic year at UK. Gary Tanner wasthe original Wildcat, dancing and entertainingthousands of UK fans at Commonwealth Stadiumand Rupp Arena during athletics events.

Scratch

Scratch joined the cheerleading squad in themid 90s in conjunction with the UK Kids Club,but today he has become almost as recognizableas the Wildcat.

The lovable face of UK Athletics garnerednational attention after being named to the 2003Capital One Mascot All-America team, an honorhe earned again in 2004.

Senior Day

Senior Day at Kentucky has become one of themost celebrated ceremonies in college basketball.Honoring its senior class, UKs event is one of themost elaborate and moving programs of its kind.

The pregame ceremony begins with player intro-

ductions. Once they have all burst through ban-ners bearing their likenesses, their families jointhem at center court. Then the state song, My Old

Kentucky Home, is sung as the home crowd bidsfarewell.

UK Cheerleaders

Rooting on the Wildcats every game are theaward-winning UK Cheerleaders.

Under the direction of adviser T. Lynn William-son and coach Jomo Thompson, the UK Cheer-leaders have become the model cheerleadingsquad in the nation. Since 1985, UK has earnedthe Universal Cheer Association national cham-pionship an impressive 18 times. The squad hasbeen runner-up five times.

UK Pep Band

With more than 100 members, the Universityof Kentucky pep band is one of the largest in thenation. Clad in its recognizable blue and white out-fits, the pep band is directed by Scott-Lee Atchison.Performing at both home football and basketballgames, the UK pep band has been named by South-

ern Living as one of the top 10 bands in the South.

The site that now serves as a tribute toAdolph Rupps outstanding coaching

accomplishments Rupp Arena has becomeone of the most recognizable gymnasiums inthe world while serving as home to collegebasketballs most storied program.

Rupp Arena opened in Fall 1976 with itsnamesake Rupp looking on from the stands. Inthat opening game, the Wildcats knocked off theWisconsin Badgers, 72-64.

Considered the mecca of college basketball,Rupp Arena will receive a $15 million technologyupgrade over the next two seasons. New ribbonboards around the second tier of the bowl wereinstalled before the 2015-16 season, and newvideo boards in each of the four corners will beinstalled throughout the year. By the 2016-17

season, Rupp will feature a new center-hungscoreboard, new lighting, new audio system andWi-Fi for fans.

Home of Champions

The UK Mens Basketball team has calledRupp Arena home during four runs to the NCAAnational championship. Joe B. Hall, Rick Pitino,Tubby Smith and John Calipari have all guidedthe Wildcats to their one shining moment sinceRupp Arena opened its doors in 1976.
