Over£1.3billionisspentonautomotiveR&DannuallyintheUKandastrategicshifttowardsalowcarboneconomywillseeinexcessof£150billioninvestedinlowandultra-lowcarbonvehicletechnologiesintheUKoverthenext20years.ThisinvestmentintoR&Discomplementedbyadedicationtotraining,skillsandattractingthebrightesttalentintothesector.TheUKautomotiveindustryprovideshundredsoftrainingcourses,supportingover14,000apprenticeshipslastyearanddedicatinggreatresourcetotrainingandup-skilling.In2011,64percentofUKautomotivecompaniesprovidedtraining,with58percentrecruiting16-yearoldsfromschool,11percentdirectlyfromuniversity.ThestrongcollaborationbetweenindustryandacademiamakestheUKahighlyconnectedmarketwithindustryhavingopenaccesstoUKresearchskillsandtechnologydevelopment.Industryco-operatescloselywithgovernment,arelationshipthatisrepresentedbyajoinGovernment/IndustryAutomotiveCouncil.

Introduction to theUK Automotive Industry


TheUKgovernmentseeselectricvehiclesasakeyfactorinthedrivetomeetUKCO2reductiontargetsandasaresulthasintroducedarangeofincentivesforelectricpassengercars:includinga‘plug-Incar’grant.FromJanuary2011(until2014),motoristspurchasingaqualifyingultra-lowemissionvehiclecanreceiveagrantofupto£5,000forcarsandfromFebruary2012£8,000forvansaspartofthenew‘plug-in-van’grant.FurthermeasuresincludezeroVehicleExciseDuty,noLondonCongestionCharge,favourablebenefit-in-kindratesforcompanycardriversandfreeparkinginsomeareas.

SMMThasanexcellentrelationshipwiththeUKgovernmentandformsasupportingbridgebetweentheUKautomotiveindustryandpolicymakers.SMMThasformedanElectricVehicleGroupwitharound175companymembersfromallareasoftheEVindustry;vehiclemanufacturers,batterymanufacturers,

infrastructureprovidersandmanymoreandanumberofrepresentativesfromthisgrouparerepresentedinthedelegationvisit.

Workingincollaborationwithgovernment,UKbasedmanufacturersarecommittedtoofferingevermoreefficientproductsthroughtheintroductionofincreasinglyefficientenginesandalternativetechnologiesandhavehelpedtheUKmotorindustrymakesignificantprogressincuttingCO2emissions:

• Inthelast10years,CO2emissionsofnewcarsregisteredintheUKhavefallenbyover20percent,fallingto138.1g/kmin2011.

• Morethan120,000carsonUKroadsbytheendof2011emittedlessthan100g/kmCO2.

• AveragenewcarCO2emissionsfell4.2percentin2011,representingthesecondbiggestannualfallinCO2emittedsince2007.

• TheAutomotiveCouncilhasidentifiedfive‘sticky’technologygroupswheretheUKhasthepotentialforasignificantreturnoninvestment.Theseinclude;energystorageandmanagement,electricmotorsandpowerelectronics,internalcombustionengines,lightweightvehicleandpowertrainstructuresandintelligentmobility.


TheEVmarketintheUKismakinggoodprogresswithinnumerablebusinessopportunitiesforUKandoverseasbasedcompaniesinarangeofareas.Thishasresultedinrecentannouncementsfrommajorvehiclemanufacturerstoinvest,suchasNissan’sdecisiontobuildtheelectricLEAFandanewfactoryforbatterymanufactureinSunderlandinthenortheastofEngland,ongoinginterestandactivityintheUKfromagrowinggroupofglobalvehiclemanufacturersincludingBMWMINI,GM,Honda,JaguarLandRover,Lotus,Mitsubishi,Nissan,PSA,Renault,Smart,Tesla,TATA,andoncommercialvans,activityfromMercedes-Benz,Renault,SmithandAllied.

Thecharginginfrastructurealsorequiresthedevelopmentofsophisticatedelectronicmanagementsystemsandsoftwareandtheneedforsuitablelegislation,regulationandprotocolstofacilitatetheintroductionanddevelopmentofthisinfrastructure–thisisakeyareaoffocusforSMMT.

Batteryproductionrequiresthemanufacture,sourcingandassemblyofanumberofelements.

Thisprovidesopportunityforanewsetofsuppliersandsub-assemblymanufacturerstojointogether,whichthenhavetobecoupledtothebatterymanagementsystem.IntheUKthereareanumberofcompaniesenteringthebatteryarenafromtheannouncementofNissan’snewfacility,toleadingsmallermanufacturersandR&Dteamswithuniquetechnologyandexpertiseinthisarea.

Demandforelectricandalternatively-fuelledvehiclesreachedrecordlevelsintheUKin2011,andaccountedfor1.3percentofthemarket.Sizeableuptakeoflow,lowerandultra-lowcarbonvehicleswillstilldependonanumberoforganisationswithinmanufactureandoperationsworkingtogether.
