Out with the old, in with the new...(anticipating 2013)
2012 has certainly been an
eventful year: the Olympics
in London (Lexingtons own
Lee Kiefer competed in
London -- what sport was it? A
prize to whomever finds theanswer to this question!), the
presidential election, the
passing ofAmerican writer
Ray Bradbury, the centurys
last transit of Venus (where
it passes between the Sun and
Earth -- when is the next time
it will happen? 2117!) are some
of the many events that have
made this year unique and
memorable.
Have you made any
resolutions for the new year?
Many people like to set goalsfor themselves; some people
want to exercise more; eat
better; read more -- is there
something that youwould
like to accomplish by the
end of 2013? If you do not
already have a goal set for
yourself, how about this: get
involved with the Lexington
community (have you been to
the Carnegie Library yet?); get
a public library card and read
one short novel every 2
months; go for a walk down anew street; try a new
restaurant. There are so many
places in Lexington that you
may have overlooked or
underestimated -- make this
winter break an opportunity to
go on mini-adventures or
better yourself!

Going to the Dentist as a Child(a mini-memoir)By Adulmajeed Al Hashmi
Have you ever heard of a phobia? Have
you ever felt afraid of something? I have never felt
so afraid in my entire life, as when I went to the
dentist as a child. I always laugh when I remember
that. Children are usually afraid of something for
many reasons. Some of the children change their
feeling from fear to courage, but others do not.
Now I am not afraid of dentist appointments, but I
am very careful when I choose my dentist.
I was an active child. I used to eatchocolate all the time until I got a decayed tooth.
One day during dinner, my father told me that he
wanted to take me to the dentist. This was the first
time I heard this word, so I asked my mother, Is it
a place for playing games? She smiled and said,
No, a dentist is the person who helps remove your
decayed tooth. He is like a doctor. Then I asked
my mother, Is it painful? She didnt answer my
question, so the fear started to grow inside me.After that I decided to avoid dentist appointments
because I thought it was painful and scary.
Because my mother didnt answer my
question, I tried to avoid my appointment in
different ways, for example: hiding, lying and
asking for unbelievable requests. When, my
parents wanted to take me to the dentist, I hid
under my parents bed. They spent more than two
hours looking for me. My father was so nervous,
but my mother told him that she would take me the
next day. Three days later, I asked my mother for
strange requests because I was so frightened. She
told me that she could not do all of these strange
things. I was so stubborn and kept saying no.
She stopped me with a stern voice: "Sit down. This
is something you have to do! So, I was surprised,
embarrassed and afraid at the same time. I sat
down and said, Okay mum.
I went to the dentist with my mother. M
mother opened the door of the dentists room
When I saw the room, it was normal. I ran i
touched everything and watched a cartoons. Whi
the dentist was coming over to us, I was playin
with my toy car. He said Hello and told me to s
in the black chair and open my mouth. He turne
on a white light. It was a very strong light. I sat i
the black chair. I saw him while he was putting h
gloves and mask. He held his sharp tools. Then
started to cry and scream, and I bolted from thchair. My mother and dental assistant caught m
As soon as they caught me, I kicked everyone an
bit my mother. My mother was so ashamed. The
spent a lot of time taking out my decayed tooth.
In short, I believe that love comes from
hate. When I was child I hated dentists an
hospitals, but now I have changed all my idea
about medicine. After I finished high school, have always dreamed of becoming a dentist. D
you know what a phobia is? A phobia is
psychological illness, when you feel frightene
about a specific thing. You should defeat fear b
trying to do what you feel afraid to do.

Coffee helps you to live your dayand keeps you focused.
When you drink coffee, it makesyou stay somewhere for a long time,

Coffee keeps you stay focused

Drinking coffee with your family

I think everyone has to drinkcoffee at least once a day. When I visit

I think that success is having a goal and then achieving it. I want to pass theTOEFL to enter the university in January. I did not get the score yet, but I will do it. I
am always saying that it is not bad if we fall down once, the bad thing is if we just give
up and never try to improve ourselves. I believe that I will do it.
By Ahmed Al Alamri
Success is having a good relationship with family and friends. When you are asuccessful person, your family loves you. If you are a successful person, you can collect

A Poem(By Anonymous)
If you love me
Dont stay with me
Please love me secretly
You cant give me this responsibility
I already have someone in my heart
There is no place for you to live in my heart
Even in the corner of my heart
There is nowhere which
You want to take rest in it
My advice to you:
Please leave me
No matter how hard it will be
Please and please dont love me
like a life
Every day I dream
To have you, but it is wrong
Always being out of my destiny
The person who I love is not you
I know you are like a gift from life
Obviously, I can see the sadness in this path
So, I cant do it
I cant go with you
Every day I dream
As selling my life
Always being out of my destiny
The person who I love is not
you
Please dont love me
If you love me
Dont stay with me
Dont love me like a life

The Republic of Korea Army is the largest branch of the South Korean armed forces. This
may be because South Korean men must complete 21 months of military service between the
age of 18 and 35.
As we know, after the Korea War (1950), North and South Korea, the political, diplomatic
and military interactions between both countries are still divided today. In 1948, the Republic of
Korea Army was first organized and continues to exist today. For around 60 years, Korean males
have to serve in the military. There are no alternatives for conscientious objectors except
imprisonment. This mandatory military service makes for a part of special Korean culture.
In general, when a Korea man becomes of legal age, he is required to take a physica
check-up to determine whether he is labeled into one of four different grades. Grades 1-3 are
normal, Grades 4 is special service; which is given to individuals that fulfill their military duties as
a civil worker; with a few special cases of exceptions. This check-up record will remain for with
him his whole life, and if someones record that mentions about mental problems or his sexuality
Even though this record is private, it might effect him in his life
For example, all companies require that a man should be discharged from the army or
exempted from army. However, when the person who was exempt goes to job interviews, some
interviewers usually ask them: Why have you been exempted from the army? And did you have
a special reason for being exempt? This is because they are a special case in Korean society
Even though they never received any disadvantage from job opportunities, they worry that the
exemption will affect their opportunities because most Korean thinks that the mandatory military
service is an important promise between person and country, so it shows that they had done it.

# Yoo-sung-jun was a very famous Korea singer, and everybody liked his cheerful and
bright character. Even though he was born in Korea, he was an American citizen. However, he
always told people; I will do the military duty and I will give up being an American citizen because
I am a Korean. Then he was on some public campaigns about the Korean army, but when he
had great success in his career in 2002, he suddenly informed the people: Sorry, I want to
remain an American citizen, so I cannot keep my Korean citizenship and I cannot do the military
duty. I am sorry about it. Unfortunately, it was his last interview in Korea.
# In addition, for this reason, he never comes back to Korea because Korea has banned
him from the country and actually deported him. This special case proves what they think about
military duty and what it means in Korea society.
For a long time, we have to operate and keep an army, and it makes us have a unique
social communication, culture and standard in South Korea. Korean men usually hear one
question from other people: Have you done the military? If the answer was yes, they hear the
next comments: Oh, you are a real adult. This simple example is a very common situation
Maybe people from other countries cannot understand this very well. Of course, we know that the
current army system is different from other countries, and we always hope that someday the
Korean army will be change into a voluntary service system, but we understand that the military
duty is still necessary for our country, and it comes from our sad history.
If you meet a Korean man, you can ask him about the Korean army. Maybe he will tell you
long stories until you request him to stop.
