UiT is the northernmost university in the world. With more than 12,000 students, 2800 staff and 250 programmes of study at all levels, it is the largest university of Northern Norway. The university serves a multicultural European-Arctic region that is undergoing strong development. UiT resulted from a merger between the University of Tromsø and Finnmark University College in August 2013.

UiT is a multi-campus university spread throughout Northern Norway. The main campuses are located in Tromsø and Alta, with smaller departments in the towns of Hammerfest and Kirkenes.

UiT is a broad research university, the fourth largest in Norway. Our study portfolio covers all classical subject areas from Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Education and Humanities, Science and Technology to Economics, Law, Social Work, Tourism, Sports and Fine Arts.

UiT is an expert on the Arctic. Growing international interest in the region and its natural resources increases the demand for highly qualified candidates to shape the future of a globalized north. UiT is dedicated to creating and disseminating cutting-edge knowledge on the Arctic regions and their societies in change in the following priority areas:

• Energy, climate, society and environment• Health, welfare and quality of life• Community development and democratisation• Sustainable use of resources• Life-serving technologies

Campus Tromsø

Campus Tromsø is the administrative centre of the university. Tromsø is a modern research city, a multicultural community and a traditional gateway to the Arctic. Since the Arctic Council established its permanent secretariat in Tromsø in 2012, the city has gained increased international attention and is becoming a meeting place for Arctic decision makers.

Tromsø is a great place to live and offers a wide range of facilities and cultural and sporting opportunities. Owing to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream, Tromsø is milder than most other places located on the same latitude.

Campus Alta

Campus Alta is growing in student numbers and the study portfolio is expanding. The faculties have well established international cooperation with partner institutions in Europe, the Barents Region and the Circumpolar North in general. Alta is located 300 km east from the main university campus in Tromsø and is only a two-hour flight away from Oslo.

Alta is the largest town in the county of Finnmark. It has a fascinating history, is experiencing growth and offers a wide range of exciting recreational opportunities.

International studies in unique Arctic settings

Ever since the founding of UiT in 1968, internationalisation has been a priority. English-taught programmes and courses are offered at all seven faculties and in both Tromsø and Alta. Around 25% of our staff and 15% of the student body is international, which makes UiT a diverse multicultural academic community.

Student Exchange We exchange students through bilateral agreements or international exchange and scholarship programmes such as Erasmus, Fulbright, UArctic North2North, Nordplus, Barentsplus, the Norwegian High North Scholarship Programme and the Norwegian Quota Scheme.

Our exchange agreements are based on research interests and cooperation with partner institutions from all over the world. We have well-established student and staff exchanges with Scandinavian and other European countries, the Circumpolar North including Russia and Canada, USA and various countries in Africa and Asia.

International Programmes Our international programmes of study teach knowledge of relevance for the global labour market. They build on UiT’s experience, expertise and strengths. We offer English-taught degree programmes and one-year programmes at both Master’s and Bachelor’s level:
