CENTRAL BERLIN
BROKEN URBAN FABRIC
Due to ruptures in Berlin’s history, specifically World War Two, the city has not only been politically divided but literally divided by the Berlin Wall. The wall has split Berlin’s urban fabric into two very separate and different parts that have developed in their own unique ways. After decades of separation the Berlin Wall was removed and the city has begun contemplating ways to re-combine the two very different urban fabric conditions back together. Berlin has taken samples of other urban fabric conditions and used these samples to fill the gaps the Berlin wall has left behind in an attempt to reunify the city. These sample methods are explored and have become the starting point in beginning to explore the urban fabric conditions of Chicago and how they may also require a reunification of their own.

RAILROAD SUPPORT PROGRAM
After an investigation of the site
multiple morphologies and
programs were identified. The
objective is to use methods
similar to Berlin by taking
samples from various locations
in Chicago and using them to
link together the disconnected
portions of the south loop. This
will begin to allow different
morphologies and programs to
overlap and cross paths which
will invent conditions that have
previously not existed. By
using this method the site is
tied back into the surrounding
urban fabric and allows the site
to become very heterogeneous
in nature. This method is
merely a tool which can further
inform the organization of the
site and suggests possible
outcomes on the site. The plan
suggests a certain amount
mixed use spaces that can be
developed and occupy the site
and also link to various other
points in the surrounding area.

SOUTH LOOP CHICAGO
MASTER PLAN WITH PROPOSAL
Within the site located in the South Loop neighborhood, my proposal runs north -south and boarders the site on its east side. The proposal attempts to pull down and continue the morphology and program of the Chicago Loop while integrating a continuous route of public space. It also tries to create a public realm within the buildings at a level high above the street. The proposal borrows methods used by Berlin by taking samples from other parts of the city, reinterpreting them, and using the samples to reconnect previously disconnected portions of Chicago. The sample used in this instance is from the Loop.

Big Box Residential Greenhouse
SCHAUMBURG, IL
The rise of oil and energy prices has a particularly devastating effect on big box retail in suburbia. This is because of the nature of its supply chain which depends on long distant foreign imports. By taking the initial internal and external logic of the big box store and applying it to other elements of the community a more efficient solution can be created. This new community allows a more urbanized landscape to take shape that also integrates food production. This organizational strategy allows for the use of a simple logic to create a much different suburban composition.

GREENHOUSEORGANIZATION
By using food production as a means to boost profits, big box retailers must maximize crop yields. This means picking the correct crop for each greenhouse and pairing it with crops that share similar growing conditions such as temperature and the amount of water needed. A technique called companion planting would also lend beneficial results. This technique involves planting one or more cops near one another in order to receive some type of benefit. These may include a certain degree of pest control, vigorous growth, and higher yield. The crops that are the most compatible are oftentimes the ones which are most often grown, but demand is an important factor as well. By paying close attention to demand and crop compatibility, big box stores can maximize profits while supplying the community with a fresh product.
BARCELONA
INDUSTRIAL PORT
TRANSFORMING AN
URBAN PORT
Throughout Barcelona’s history
the city has had several
strategies of transformation
and development. Barcelona’s
growth is limited by the physical
features that surround it; rivers
to the north and south,
mountains to the west and the
Mediterranean Sea to the east.
Because of this, the city has
been forced to change its
strategy of expansion to one of
re-invention. This strategy
becomes evident in projects
associated with the 1992
Olympics, the transformation of
the highly industrious Poblenou
area, and the creation of the
Forum, which creates a more
public waterfront and public
parks. This project attempts to
follow this strategy of
re-invention to create a space
dedicated to leisure that relates
to the sea and will consist of
thalassotherapy facilities for
high density use.

CHICAGO’S RIVERFRONT_WOLF POINT WATER TAXI STATION ARCH 365: FALL 2008
WOLF POINT CHICAGO
RIVER INFRASTRUCTURE
By looking at the Chicago
Water Taxi infrastructure from a
commuter/tourist point of view,
one can see the impact public
transportation has on creating
various networks within the city
via the Chicago River. By
understanding and re-creating
these networks on the site at
Wolf Point the new water taxi
station can more easily be inte-
grated into the macro network
and serve as a hub for several
public activities while using the
riverfront as an anchor for
these activities. Destinations
on the site result in places for
public activity while the network
itself is translated into pedes-
trian walking and biking paths.
Between these areas of public
activity exist zones of phytore-
mediation which clean runoff
water that is fed back into the
Chicago River.
