CONSTRAINTS TO PRODUCTION

A C B

D E F

H G

Page 11: Uganda Groundnut Seed Roadmap TL III Annual Meet

Constraints in groundnuts seed sector

• Lack of effective demand to guide supply

• Frequent impromptu demands

• Policies (Seed law, enforcers)

• End results (Fake and counterfeit seeds)

• No premium for good seed

• Recovery of funds from consolidated pool into

breeding program

• Low/Ltd Private sector involvements

• Selfing; Bulky; Quick loss of viability; High seeding

rate

• Low multiplication ratio: 1: 10 vs 1:100 in

maize hybrids

• Lack of organized groups/Cooperatives

Wealth creation needs 55MT per year

Page 12: Uganda Groundnut Seed Roadmap TL III Annual Meet

• Seeds are expensive in relation to

other legumes e.g groundnuts vs

beans

• Foundation seeds 20,000 vs 7000

• No crop Insurance

• Weather variability: Drought vs Elnino

• Infrastructure: cold storage, irrigation

• Lack of strong industry to absorb

grains

• Cottages industries not stratified
