Competition informationUEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Extra time and penalty kicks: If the result stands as a draw at the end of normal playing time, extra time of twoperiods of 15 minutes shall be played. If one of the teams scores more goals than the other during extra time, thatteam shall be declared the winner. If the two teams are still equal after extra time, the winner shall be determined bykicks from the penalty mark.

• Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in UEFA clubcompetition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions,a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequentodd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc.). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carriedforward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA clubcompetitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and since 2007/08, at least six places have been reserved forplayers trained by the club's own football academy of which half could be players trained by other clubs from withinthe same association of the said club. The 'B' list continues to exist – involving an unlimited number of Under-21players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. In 2006/07, thenumber of locally trained players required began at four but rose to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figureallowed to be association trained. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimumof three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who hasbeen registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between theage of 15 and 21.

• Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Champions League matches from the start of the firstknockout round, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remainingmatches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competitionmatches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the playerhas not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Champions League this season.

Competition recordsCompetition recordsUEFA Champions League final: Did you know?

• Spain are the most successful nation in the competition's history with six triumphs, one more than Italy. Spain's wins– 1998, 2000, 2002, 2006, 2009 and 2011 – came from nine final dates while Italy were victorious in 1994, 1996,2003, 2007 and 2010 from their 11 appearances. England emerged victorious in 1999, 2005 and 2008, and werelosing finalists in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 while Germany were winners in 1997 and 2001 and runners-upin 1999, 2002 and 2010.

• No team has played in more finals than AC Milan as 2007 marked their sixth appearance. They equalled Real MadridCF's record of three victories with that triumph against Liverpool FC in Athens, a mark FC Barcelona matched in 2011thanks to a final defeat of Manchester United FC.

• Italy with 26 has the most appearances per nation in all-time European Cup finals – of those 12 have ended invictory, mosr recently FC Internazionale Milano's 2010 triumph, and 14 in defeat. England has recorded 11 wins from18 final appearances. Spain has 22 final appearances (13 wins/nine defeats), Germany 14 (six wins), Portugal nine(four wins) and the Netherlands eight (six wins).

• In the previous 19 finals, there have been 14 outright wins and five matches decided on shoot-outs. A total of 49goals have been scored with the most common results being 2-1, which has happened on four occasions, while threefinals have finished 1-0.

• Fourteen European Cup finals have gone to extra time. The finals of 1958, 1968, 1970 and 1992 were decided inthe additional period, while the 1974 showpiece between FC Bayern München and Club Atlético de Madrid ended1-1 after 120 minutes with Bayern subsequently winning a replay. The other nine finals were settled by a penaltyshoot-out after extra time: in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008 when Manchester UnitedFC defeated Chelsea FC 6-5 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

• Milan's 4-0 win against FC Barcelona in the 1994 final remains the biggest winning margin and the Rossoneri werealso involved in the highest scoring showpiece when they shared six goals with Liverpool in 2005 before penalties. In terms of the European Cup, Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 at Hampden Park, Glasgow remainsthe most emphatic while Bayern (1974 v Club Atlético de Madrid) and Milan (1989 v FC Steaua Bucureşti) alsorecorded 4-0 successes.

• No player has scored a hat-trick in a UEFA Champions League final. Daniele Massaro (Milan 1994), Karlheinz Riedle(Borussia Dortmund 1997), Hernán Crespo (Milan 2005), Filippo Inzaghi (2007) and Diego Milito (2010) all strucktwice. In European Cup terms, Ferenc Puskás scored four goals in Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960,when Alfredo di Stéfrano found the net three times; Puskás scored another final hat-trick in 1962 with Pierino Prati(Milan 1969) the only other player to have managed a final hat-trick.

• Only Raúl González (Madrid 2000 and 2002), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona 2006 and 2009) and Lionel Messi (Barcelona2009 and 2011) have scored in two UEFA Champions League finals – part of an exclusive club of 16 players to havefound the net in more than one European Cup showpiece. Alfredo di Stéfano and Puskás lead the list having eachscored seven goals for Madrid.

• Jens Lehmann (2006) and Didier Drogba (2008) are the only players to be dismissed in a European Cup final.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last clubto win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996,1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final inMunich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teamswon Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), ManchesterUnited FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma(1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country.
