Head coachBorussia Dortmund: Jürgen KloppDate of birth: 16 June 1967Nationality: GermanPlaying career: SV Glatten, TuS Ergenzingen, 1. FC Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-WeissFrankfurt, 1. FSV Mainz 05Coaching career: 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund

• Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turnedprofessional with Mainz, starting off as a striker before becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the topflight but made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record, scoring 52 goals.

• 'Kloppo', as he is known in Germany, was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the clubavoid relegation to the third tier.

• Duly won a permanent contract and over the next few years built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2.Bundesliga; narrowly missed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003, Mainz losing out to Eintracht by a single goal in thelatter campaign.

• Finally took Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and kept them in the Bundesliga until 2007, taking theminto the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking – they lost to eventual winners Sevilla FC in the first round.

• After another near miss for promotion in 2007/08 Klopp – whose enthusiasm and passion, plus his stint as a TVpundit, have made him popular all over Germany – left for Dortmund. Took them to sixth in his first season, led theminto the UEFA Europa League in the following campaign and then, with a squad packed with exciting youngtalent, oversaw league title wins in 2010/11 and 2011/12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign. Málaga CF: Manuel PellegriniDate of birth: 16 September 1953Nationality: ChileanPlaying career: CF Universidad de ChileCoaching career: CF Universidad de Chile, CD Palestino (three times), Chile Under-20, CD O'Higgins, CD UniversidadCatólica, LDU de Quito, CA San Lorenzo de Almagro, CA River Plate, Villarreal CF, Real Madrid CF, Málaga CF

• The former centre-back began his coaching career in 1988 with his sole club as a player, Universidad de Chile, before spending the next 16 years working with sides in Chile, Ecuador and Argentina.

• Took over at Villarreal in 2004, guiding them to third place in the Liga in his debut season and securing a place inthe UEFA Champions League for the first time. His side also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.

• The following campaign, Villarreal defied all expectations by reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals,where they bowed out 1-0 on aggregate to Arsenal FC. Guided the club to second place in the 2007/08 Liga, a clubrecord, and the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals the following season, again being knocked out by Arsenal.

• Signed a two-year contract with Real Madrid on 2 June 2009, the club winning a then record 96 points in the Ligabut still finishing second behind FC Barcelona, prompting Pellegrini's dismissal in May 2010

• That November he succeeded Jesualdo Ferreira as coach of Málaga and in the following campaign oversaw afourth-placed league finish, the club's best ever, subsequently negotiating UEFA Champions League qualifying toreach the group stage for the first time.

Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 30 occasions, including FC Barcelona and MálagaCF in this season's round of 16. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals andFC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed aftera home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finalswhen they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-two ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 21 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Thirteen ties have gone to penalties, including six finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2012. The first two-leggedtie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

• There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, mostrecently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16.

• FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugalin the 2008/09 round of 16, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two gamesalso featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• FC Bayern München's 7-0 second-leg defeat of FC Basel 1893 in the 2011/12 round of 16 is the largest margin ofvictory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match.

• The biggest European Cup quarter-final victory was Real Madrid CF's 8-0 first-leg defeat of Sevilla FC in 1957/58.

• Manchester United FC's 7-1 win against AS Roma in 2006/07 is the biggest victory in a UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-final match. FC Barcelona have twice won 5-1, against Chelsea FC after extra time (1999/2000) and FCShakhtar Donetsk (2010/11), while there have been four 4-0 victories.

• Chelsea FC-Liverpool FC in 2008/09 featured 12 goals over the two legs, a quarter-final record.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times.

• Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) andJosé Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs.

• This season Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage (including, aswith all records, the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage) since the UEFAChampions League began.
