Match backgroundGalatasaray and Lokomotiv Moskva are both returning to the UEFA Champions League after a period of absence – alengthy one, in the case of the Russian club – and, in an even-looking Group D, each will be seeking a positive starton matchday one.

• The Turkish team are in this stage for the first time since 2015/16 – their fourth successive group campaign – whileLokomotiv are in the group stage for the first time in 15 seasons.

Previous meetings• Away clubs held sway in the sides' only past fixtures, in the 2002/03 UEFA Champions League first group stage –when current coaches Fatih Terim and Yuri Semin were again in charge of Galatasaray and Lokomotiv respectively.Galatasaray scored twice in the final 20 minutes to win 2-0 in Moscow on matchday one, but Loko bounced back witha 2-1 success in Istanbul in the penultimate round of fixtures – all the goals again coming in the last 20 minutes. Thathelped the Russian club finish second in the section behind a Barcelona side who won every game; Galatasarayended fourth.

Form guideGalatasaray• Turkish champions in 2017/18, Galatasaray last reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2013/14.

• Galatasaray are in the group stage for the 15th time – Beşiktaş are the next most successful Turkish club, on seven.

• The Turkish club's 2017/18 European campaign lasted only one tie – they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Swedish clubÖstersund in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

• Cimbom have drawn their last three home European games 1-1. They have won only one of their last ninecontinental fixtures in Istanbul, drawing five.

• Gala have lost their last three home fixtures against Russian visitors, and have never won a home match in fourattempts. Indeed, that 2002 victory at Lokomotiv is their sole success in eight games overall, home and away (D2 L5).

• Galatasaray are the only team from Turkey to have reached a European Cup semi-final, in 1989.

Lokomotiv• Russian champions last season for the first time since 2004, Lokomotiv are launching their fourth group stagecampaign, having not featured since 2003/04 – their third successive appearance – when they reached the round of16.

• The Moscow club have qualified from their group on their last two appearances.

• In 2017/18, Lokomotiv kicked off in the UEFA Europa League group stage, beating Nice in the round of 32 beforesuffering an 8-1 aggregate loss against eventual champions Atlético Madrid in the last 16.

• The 3-0 first-leg loss at Atlético was Lokomotiv's first away defeat in Europe last season (W2 D2). They have lostonly two of their last ten European away matches (W4 D4), the other in Turkey at Fenerbahçe (0-2) in the 2015/16UEFA Europa League round of 32.

• Loko have drawn their last two away UEFA Champions League matches 1-1 – both in the 2005/06 qualifying phase– but are without an away victory in the competition since that 2002 win at Galatasaray. Their subsequent record, qualifying included, is D4 L6.

• The Moscow club have drawn three of their last four fixtures against Turkish clubs, losing the other. At home overall, they have won only one of their five fixtures with Turkish visitors (D2 L2).

Head coachFatih TerimDate of birth: 4 September 1953Nationality: TurkishPlaying career: Adana Demirspor, GalatasarayCoaching career: Ankaragücü, Göztepe, Turkey Under-21s, Turkey (three times), Galatasaray (four times),Fiorentina, Milan

• A central defender, Terim represented Galatasaray for over a decade, winning three Turkish caps, and played 51games for Turkey, 32 as captain. Began his coaching career with Ankaragücü and Göztepe, before being namedassistant to national team boss Sepp Piontek and put in charge of the U21s in 1990.

• Appointed Turkey coach in 1993, Terim led them to EURO '96. They lost all their matches in England, but justgetting to the final tournament, Turkey's first since the 1954 FIFA World Cup, was a major landmark.

• Returned to Galatasaray after the EURO, winning four league titles, two domestic cups and the 2000 UEFA Cup.Serie A came calling and Terim took the helm at Fiorentina and Milan before rejoining Galatasaray; however, a run ofdisappointing results brought about a temporary retirement in 2004.

• Reappointed Turkey coach in 2005, Terim – known as 'İmparator' (The Emperor) for his leadership skills – steeredthem to the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals but could not guide them to the World Cup in either 2006 or 2010, the latterprompting his departure.

• Back for a third spell as Galatasaray boss in July 2011, in his first season he inspired Cimbom to their first Süper Ligcrown in four years. Repeated the feat in 2013 when also helping Galatasaray to the UEFA Champions Leaguequarter-finals. Named head of the national team for a third time – on a part-time basis – in August 2013, he partedcompany with Galatasaray a month later to assume the role full time. Was unable to lead Turkey to the 2014 WorldCup, but did take them to UEFA EURO 2016. Took over at Galatasaray once again in December 2017, ending thatseason with another league title – his seventh with the club as head coach.

Yuri SeminDate of birth: 11 May 1947 Nationality: Russian Playing career: Spartak Orel, Spartak Moskva, Dinamo Moskva, Kairat Almaty, Chkalovets Novosibirsk, LokomotivMoskva, Kuban Krasnodar Coaching career: Pamir Dushanbe, Lokomotiv Moskva (four times), Russia, Dinamo Moskva, Dynamo Kyiv (twice),Gabala, Mordovia Saransk, Anzhi

• One of the most successful Russian coaches of recent times, Semin's playing career took off in 1965 when he wasinvited to join Spartak Moskva after starring for Russia's Under-21 team at a tournament between the Soviet republics.

• After leaving Spartak, Semin – a midfielder or striker – moved to rivals Dinamo where he won the 1970 USSR Cup.Retired due to injury in 1980 while captain of Kuban having played 280 Soviet League games, scoring 39 goals.

• After receiving his coaching licence he started work at Pamir in 1983 but made his name at Lokomotiv, where hespent 19 years until 2005, interrupted by a short break in 1990 when he was an adviser to New Zealand Under-21s.

• His Lokomotiv side won the 2002 and 2004 titles in addition to four Russian Cups, and reached the UEFA CupWinners' Cup semi-finals in 1998 and 1999. Having twice served as assistant coach, Semin took over as Russia bossin April 2005, but quit six months later.

• Following a spell as Dinamo coach and a stint as Lokomotiv technical director, Semin won a Ukrainian league title asDynamo Kyiv boss in 2008/09, but left that summer to rejoin Lokomotiv; he was dismissed late the following year, returning to Dynamo within a month. Moved to Azerbaijan at Gabala in 2013 and, after short spells at Mordovia andAnzhi, took charge at Lokomotiv again in August 2016; claimed his fifth Russian Cup with the club in 2016/17 and athird league title the following year.
