Match backgroundPFC CSKA Moskva and Manchester United FC will both hope to cement their matchday one victories when they meetin the second round of Group A fixtures.

• The teams were paired together in the group stages in 2009/10 and 2015/16, and on each occasion United collectedfour points from the two encounters.

• United have never lost in Russia, and won the 2008 UEFA Champions League final against Chelsea FC atMoscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Previous meetings• It was on 21 October 2009 that the clubs met for the first time in Moscow, where United's Antonio Valencia scoredthe only goal after 86 minutes.

• CSKA have come bottom of their group in their last four UEFA Champions League campaigns. In 2016/17, havingqualified automatically for the group phase, they finished behind AS Monaco FC, Bayer 04 Leverkusen andTottenham Hotspur FC in their section.

• CSKA have, however, won all five of their European fixtures this term, the first four without conceding a goal, andtriumphed 2-1 at SL Benfica on matchday one.

Manchester United• United completed a clean sweep of European trophies with victory in last season's UEFA Europa League. The winagainst AFC Ajax in Stockholm added to their European Cup triumphs in 1968, 1999 and 2008 and their 1991European Cup Winners' Cup success.

• This is United's third European assignment this term, including the 2-1 loss to Real Madrid CF in the UEFA SuperCup in Skopje on 8 August. • United overcame FC Basel 1893 3-0 at Old Trafford on matchday one and are now seeking to extend a five-matchunbeaten European away record (W3 D2) since that setback at Fenerbahçe.

• His career as a BATE defender ended at 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments, Goncharenko immediatelyswitched to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006before graduating to become assistant to head coach Igor Kriushenko.

• In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATEto five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November 2007,Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions; won the first of five successive league titles withBATE in 2008, and took them into the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2008/09, drawing twice withJuventus.

• Added a domestic double in 2010 and Goncharenko – who lifted the 1999 and 2002 titles as a player – was alsofeted as his nation's coach of the year for three years in a row between 2008 and 2010.

• Twice reached the UEFA Europa League group stage, going on to the round of 32 in 2010/11. Added another leaguetitle in 2011 and took BATE into the UEFA Champions League group stage for second time, achieving another notabledraw against AC Milan. BATE returned to the group stage for the third time in five seasons in 2012/13, beating LOSCLille and eventual winners FC Bayern München.

• Won the 2012 Belarusian title but elected to take charge of Russian side Kuban in October 2013, saying: "Six yearsof coaching in one place is a long time. Now's it time to part ways." Lasted a year at Kuban and then six games withUral in 2015. Won the Russian title as CSKA assistant coach under Leonid Slutski and returned to the Moscow sideas head coach in December 2016 after six months at Ufa.

• A former teacher, Mourinho had spells working at Sporting Clube de Portugal, Porto and FC Barcelona as acoaching assistant in the 1990s.

• As coach, had a nine-game stay at Benfica and a highly successful tenure at Leiria before really making hismark after arriving at Porto in January 2002. In his first full season, 2002/03, Porto won the UEFA Cup and a domesticdouble. The next year they retained their league title and claimed the UEFA Champions League with a 3-0 defeat ofAS Monaco FC in Gelsenkirchen.

• Joined Chelsea in 2004 and led the club to the League Cup and their first league championship for 50 years in hisfirst season. Followed up with the league title again in 2006, and both the League Cup and FA Cup in 2007 but left theclub that September.

• Joined Inter in June 2008 and in his first campaign retained the Scudetto, a feat the Nerazzurri repeated in 2009/10when they also added the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League title, their first European crown since 1965.

• Victory at the Santiago Bernabéu was Mourinho's last act as Inter coach before he joined Madrid. His first seasonfeatured the club's first Copa del Rey victory in 18 years and his second brought the Liga title; also led Madrid to threesuccessive UEFA Champions League semi-finals before returning to Chelsea at the start of June 2013.

• Won a third Premier League title with the London club in 2015, also adding the English League Cup. Left inDecember 2015 and appointed Manchester United manager the following summer, leading the club to the LeagueCup and the UEFA Europa League in his first season in charge.
