Match backgroundThe 2016/17 UEFA Champions League final pits the season's top scorers, holders Real Madrid CF, against aJuventus side who have conceded just three goals en route to Cardiff.

• Both clubs have plenty of recent final experience to draw from. Defending champions Madrid – bidding to becomethe first team to retain the trophy in the UEFA Champions League era – are in a third final in four years, having beatencity rivals Club Atlético de Madrid in both 2014 and 2016; Juventus, meanwhile, lost to FC Barcelona in the 2015showpiece.

• This match is a repeat of the 1998 final in Amsterdam, won 1-0 by Real Madrid against a Juventus side featuringcurrent Merengues coach Zinédine Zidane. That gave the Spaniards the seventh of their record 11 European Cups.

• Juve have won the trophy twice, in 1985 and 1996, but have lost in the final six times – more than any other club.

• Juventus have won nine and drawn three of their 12 games in this season's competition, and are seeking to becomethe first team to lift the trophy unbeaten since Manchester United FC in 2007/08. United were the sixth club to win theUEFA Champions League without losing a match.

• Madrid and Juve will both be competing in their sixth UEFA Champions League final, equalling AC Milan's record.

• Madrid have won all five of their UEFA Champions League finals, a record number of wins, while Juve have lost thefixture more times than any other club – four. Indeed, their only victory was on penalties – against AFC Ajax in 1996.

Final pedigreeJuventus• This is a ninth European Cup final appearance for Juventus, who have lost their last four. Overall their record is W2L6:1972/73: AFC Ajax 1-0 Juventus1982/83: Hamburger SV 1-0 Juventus1984/85: Juventus 1-0 Liverpool FC1995/96: Juventus 1-1 AFC Ajax (aet, Juventus win 4-2 on pens)1996/97: Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Juventus1997/98: Juventus 0-1 Real Madrid CF2002/03: Juventus 0-0 AC Milan (aet, Milan win 3-2 on pens)2014/15: Juventus 1-3 FC Barcelona

• The 2015 defeat by Barcelona in Berlin was Juve's sixth final reversal – setting an unwanted new record. They hadpreviously been level with FC Bayern München and SL Benfica on five final losses.

• Gianluigi Buffon is the sole survivor of Juventus's 2003 final appearance in their 2016/17 squad.

• Buffon, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Claudio Marchisio all started the 2015 final forJuve, with Stefano Sturaro an unused substitute. Giorgio Chiellini missed out through injury.

• Sami Khedira was part of the victorious Real Madrid team in 2014; he, Mario Mandžukić, a winner with Bayern theprevious year, and Dani Alves (Barcelona 2009, 2011, 2015) could join the list of 13 players to win the UEFAChampions League with two different clubs.

• Mandžukić and Juve's 2015 final goalscorer, Álvaro Morata, could both join the list of two players to score fordifferent clubs in the European Cup final: only Velibor Vasović (FK Partizan 1966, Ajax 1969) and Cristiano Ronaldo(Manchester United, Real Madrid 2014) have previously managed it.

• Juventus have also played in four UEFA Cup finals – winning three (1977, 1990, 1993) and losing one (1995) – aswell as the 1984 European Cup Winners' Cup final, which they won.

Real Madrid• Madrid have won a record 11 European Cups, and have triumphed in their last five finals. Overall their final record isW11 L3:1955/56: Real Madrid 4-3 Stade de Reims Champagne1956/57: Real Madrid 2-0 ACF Fiorentina1957/58: Real Madrid 3-2 AC Milan (aet)1958/59: Real Madrid 2-0 Stade de Reims Champagne1959/60: Real Madrid 7-3 Eintracht Frankfurt1961/62: SL Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid1963/64: FC Internazionale Milano 3-1 Real Madrid1965/66: Real Madrid 2-1 FK Partizan

Competition factsUEFA Champions League final: Did you know?• Spain are the most successful nation with nine triumphs, four more than Italy. Spain's wins – 1998, 2000, 2002,2006, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016 – came from 14 final dates while Italy were victorious in 1994, 1996, 2003,2007 and 2010 from their 12 appearances. England emerged victorious in 1999, 2005, 2008 and 2012 and werelosing finalists in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011 while Germany were winners in 1997, 2001 and 2013 andrunners-up in 1999, 2002, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

• No team has played in more finals than AC Milan, who made their sixth appearance in 2007. Real Madrid (1998,2000, 2002, 2014, 2016) have five final victories, one more than Barcelona (2006, 2009, 2011, 2015) with Milan onthree (1994, 2003, 2007).

• Italy and Spain jointly have the most appearances per nation in all-time European Cup finals with 27; Spain has 16wins from those 27 final appearances while Italy has recorded 12 victories and 15 defeats. England has 12 wins from19 final appearances, with Germany on 17 appearances (seven wins), Portugal nine (four wins) and the Netherlandseight (six wins).

• There have been six finals between teams from the same country. In 2000 Real Madrid beat Valencia CF 3-0 at theStade de France; three years later Milan defeated Juventus on penalties at Old Trafford; in 2008 Manchester Unitedovercame Chelsea in Moscow, also on spot kicks; in 2013 Bayern München beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Wembley. Then in 2014, Real Madrid overcame Club Atlético de Madrid 4-1 after extra time in Lisbon in the first European finalbetween teams from the same city, and again beat their neighbours, this time on penalties, in Milan two years later.

• In the previous 24 UEFA Champions League finals, there have been 17 outright wins and seven matches decided onshoot-outs. A total of 65 goals have been scored with the most common results being 2-1 and 1-1, which have eachhappened on five occasions; three finals have finished 1-0.

• Seventeen European Cup finals have gone to extra time, including the 2016 decider. The finals of 1958, 1968, 1970,1992 and 2014 were decided in the additional period, while the 1974 showpiece between Bayern and Atlético Madridended 1-1 after 120 minutes with Bayern winning a replay. The other ten finals were settled by a penalty shoot-outafter extra time: in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016, when Real Madriddefeated Atlético 5-3 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw.

• Milan's 4-0 win against FC Barcelona in the 1994 final remains the biggest winning margin and the Rossoneri werealso involved in the highest scoring showpiece when they shared six goals with Liverpool in 2005 before penalties. Interms of the European Cup, Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 remains the most impressive whileBayern (1974 v Atlético Madrid) and Milan (1989 v Steaua Bucureşti) also recorded 4-0 successes.

• No player has scored a hat-trick in a UEFA Champions League final. Daniele Massaro (Milan 1994), Karl-HeinzRiedle (Borussia Dortmund 1997), Hernán Crespo (Milan 2005), Filippo Inzaghi (Milan 2007) and Diego Milito(Internazionale Milano 2010) all struck twice. In European Cup terms, Ferenc Puskás scored four goals in Madrid's 7-3 defeat of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, when Alfredo di Stéfano found the net three times; Puskás scored another finalhat-trick in 1962 with Pierino Prati (Milan 1969) the only other player to have managed a final hat-trick.

• Only Raúl González (Madrid 2000 and 2002), Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona 2006 and 2009), Lionel Messi (Barcelona2009 and 2011), Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United 2008, Real Madrid 2014) and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid2014, 2016) have scored in two UEFA Champions League finals – part of an exclusive club of 18 players to havefound the net in more than one European Cup showpiece. Di Stéfano and Puskás lead the list having each scoredseven goals for Madrid.

• Paolo Maldini's goal 51 seconds into the 2005 showpiece is the fastest in a UEFA Champions League final.

• Jens Lehmann (2006) and Didier Drogba (2008) are the only players to be dismissed in a European Cup final.

• Clarence Seedorf is the only player to lift the European Cup with three clubs (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998, Milan2003, 2007). Bob Paisley (Liverpool 1977, 1978, 1981) was the first coach to win three times, a feat Carlo Ancelotti(Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014) replicated.

• In 2014 Ancelotti also became the fifth coach to win the trophy with two clubs; Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983), José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004,Internazionale 2010) and Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) had previously achieved the feat.

• Seven people have won the trophy as both a player and a coach: Miguel Muñoz (Real Madrid 1956, 1957 (player);Real Madrid 1960, 1966 (coach); Giovanni Trapattoni (AC Milan 1963, 1969; Juventus 1985); Johan Cruyff (Ajax1971, 1972, 1973; Barcelona 1992); Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan 1989, 1990; AC Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014);Frank Rijkaard (AC Milan 1989, 1990, Ajax 1995; Barcelona 2006); Josep Guardiola (Barcelona 1992; Barcelona

2009, 2011); Zinédine Zidane (Real Madrid 2002; Real Madrid 2016).

• No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy, with Milan (1989, 1990) the last club topick up consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997)and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose.

• Only two sides have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) andJuventus (1996, final in Rome). Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern werebeaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know?• Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in FC Barcelona's 7-1 triumph against Bayer 04Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat reproduced by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21October 2014.
