UD THEATER PROGRAM PRESENTS COLE PORTER'S "ANYTHING GOES"
News Release
March 25, 1994. Contact: Pam Huber
DAYTON, Ohio -- A little bit of story and a large helping of music and dance
combine to make "Anything Goes" a quintessential Broadway favorite. The musical was
lyricist and composer Cole Porter's first show, and it contains some of his most memorable
songs, including "Anything Goes," "Blow, Gabriel, Blow," "You're the Top," "It's DeLovely"
and "I Get a Kick Out of You."
"Anything Goes," with book by Guy Bolton, P.O. Wodehouse, Howard Lindsay and
Russel Crouse, will be performed by the University of Dayton theater program at 8 p.m. on
April 14, 15, 16 and 21, 22, and 23 in Boll Theatre in UD's Kennedy Union. General
admission is $7.
"This musical is from the worst years of the Depression," said Patrick Gilvary, director
of "Anything Goes" and UD's theater program. "It was a complete escape for people. The
show said, 'Come in, sit down and have a good time - don't worry about plot, just give us
pretty music.'"
And that's exactly what the show does, he said. "It has a little bit of plot, but the
scene~ust get you to the next number," Gilvary said. The story is set on board a ship that is
traveling from America to England. Reno Sweeney will be played by first-year student Katie
Rayhawk, Billy Crocker will be played by sophomore Rob Watson and Moonface Martin will
be played by sophomore Steven Sampietro. Junior Amy Askins will play Bonnie, junior
Gretchen Kraas will play Hope Harcourt and junior Brian Sullivan will play Sir Evelyn
Oakleigh.
