of ourselves.

Page 12: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Latino Cultural Norms

• In Latin culture it is considered impolite to toss things to each other. If you need to give something to

someone, make sure you walk over and hand it to them.

• Latinos will usually greet friends and relatives more personally than do Americans. Even men give

hugs to other men! Men usually also greet woman with "kisses" meaning they touch cheeks while

making a kissing noise with their lips. Woman also greet other woman with "kisses." These little kisses

are purely friendly and have no romantic meaning.

• Simple hand gestures can have multiple meanings in the Latin culture. For example, the hand gesture

used in America for "come here," the hand palm up with the index finger extending in and out three or

four times, has a very different meaning in Latin culture. It means that you are very romantically

interested in the person and is considered a solicitation. To motion to someone in the Latin culture

"come here" extend your hand palm down and move all four fingers in and out together three or four

times.

Page 16: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Page 17: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

American Cultural Norms

• Individuality is encouraged in the U.S. At an early age it is encouraged for people to make

and reach their own goals.

• Privacy and personal space is important to the American culture

• "Time is money."

• Americans typically greet very informally compared to other cultures. “Hi and Bye” they

seldom hug or kiss good bye.

• Overall the American culture can be very relaxed compared to other cultures for

instance in the Latino culture when you walk into a room you would seek out and greet

the most senior members of the group. In America you would greet the first person you

see.

Page 18: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Normas Americanas

Page 28: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Workforce Integration• Don’t be intimidated!

• Pay attention to the environment around you and think of it as an opportunity to learn.

• Share with others about yourself, where you come from and why some concepts, behaviors or

gestures are foreign to you.

• If you find something offensive in the workforce ask for an explanation before becoming upset.

Ensure it is not a misunderstanding.

• When going into any new environment do your research about the company and what they expect

from you as an employee.

• Remember that adapting to a new environment takes time, patience and perseverance.

• Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions! You can never ask enough questions.

Page 29: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Integración Laboral

Page 30: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

• Haga preguntas, haga preguntas, haga preguntas.

Page 31: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

How to Build a Network?

Page 32: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

How to build a network?

• It is easy to stick to people who are like us, speak our language and have our beliefs, but that does not

necessarily help you become adaptable or successful in a new environment.

• Volunteer in your community events. Get involved!

• Seek out professional resources and organizations like ours, for example.

• Find someone who has overcome similar challenges as you are facing today. Make them a role model.

• Talk to people anywhere at any time about yourself, what you do, and your interests.

• Go to networking events at least a few times a year.

• Use platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn to get connected to new people who are successful and

have success as an objective.

Page 33: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Cómo construir una Red?

Page 34: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

modelo a seguir.

Page 36: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Building Confidence in the U.S. Workforce

• Understand that you are going into an existing environment and that it will require some give and

take.

• You will run into ignorance, hatred and challenges. Be aware of it and rise above it.

• Be proud of who you are, where you come from and what you know. It is valuable no matter where

you are.

• Take the time out to invest in yourself and your education. It is where you will obtain the highest

return on your time.

• Practice makes perfect. The more you practice your skills, the more confident you become.

• If you’re first reaction is defensive, slow down and get more information. Then make a decision.

Page 37: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)

Page 38: UCLA Workshop 9th Annual Immigrant Youth Empowerment Conference (IYEC) (1)
