BRUINS TO WATCH IN BRIEF• UCLA has won 18 of its last 21 non-conference match-ups. The Bruins have won 16 of 17 regular season non-conference games under Coach

Mora, with the lone loss coming last season at Texas A&M.• UCLA is 18-11 in true road games under Coach Mora– ‘16: 1-5, ‘15: 4-2, ‘14: 5-0, ‘13: 4-2, ‘12: 4-2 and 13-9 in regular season P12 road

games (‘12: 3-1, ‘13: 3-2, ‘14: 4-0, ‘15: 3-2, ‘16: 0-4).• Krys Barnes posted a career-high 12 tackles in the win over Hawaii’i ... The true sophomore had a total of three career tackles coming into the game• Making their first career starts vs. Texas A&M were DL Boss Tagaloa, DB Octavius Spencer, OL Michael Alves, DL Jealan Phillips, DB Darnay

Holmes...DL Nick Terry made his first start vs. Hawai’i• Darnay Holmes’ 30-yard interception return vs. Hawai’i was the 13th defensive score for the Bruins since 2012.• With preliminary NFL rosters being revealed last weekend - seven members of last year’s UCLA defensive unit are with NFLteams in one capacity or another, including three defensive linemen - DL Takkarist McKinley, OL Conor McDermott, DB Marcus Rios, DL Eli Ankou,

DL Eddie Vanderdoes, DB Randall Goforth, LB Jayon Brown, DB Fabian Moreau.• Three dads of current Bruins are working as assistant coaches in the NFL - TE Austin Roberts (Alfredo- Chargers RB coach), TE Caleb Wilson

(Chris - Eagles DL coach), DB Quentin Lake (Carnell - Steelers DB coach).• Starts leaders among current players - OL Scott Quessenberry - 33, DB Jaleel Wadood - 33, LB Kenny Young - 32, QB Josh Rosen 21, OL Kenny

Lacy - 21; Young has the longest starting streak on the team - last 20 games.• UCLA is 30-8 under Coach Mora when scoring first in a game.• UCLA has posted a 13-11 overall record against ranked opponents under Coach Mora and has won seven of the last 12.• True Freshmen Played: 2017: 4, 2016: 11, 2015: 10, 2014: 9, 2013: 18, 2012:12 --- True freshmen who have seen action in 2017: DB Darnay

Holmes, DL Jaelan Phillips, DB Mo Osling III, DL Martin Andrus• Since the start of the 2012 season, UCLA has won 23 of 28 games (82%) when winning the turnover battle and owns a record of 20-20 (50%)

in games when losing or tying the turnover ratio.• UCLA’s total of 25 draftees in the last five NFL Drafts is the most of any Pac-12 school during that stretch and include a first-round selection

in four of the past five drafts.• In addition to the true freshmen, players seeing their first career action vs. Texas A&M include: WR Damian Alloway, OL Michael Alves, LB

Breland Brandt, OL Jake Burton, LB Mique Juarez, DL Marcus Moore, DL Osa Odighizuwa, DL Chigozie Nnoruka, DB Keyon Riley, LB Leni Toailoa, TE Jordan Wilson. WR Demetric Felton saw his first career action vs. Hawai’i.

• The Bruins are 37-3 under Coach Mora when ahead at the half. • Tight end Caleb Wilson’s 15 catches vs. Texas A&M established a new UCLA school record (WR J.J. Stokes had 14 catches vs. Wisconsin in

1994 Rose Bowl game and WR Jordan Payton had 14 vs. Washington State in 2015) ... Wilson was just the third Bruin receiver to go over the 200 receiving yards mark with his 208-yard effort vs. Texas A&M (WR J.J. Stokes holds school mark with 263 yards vs. USC, 1992; WR Craig Bragg had 230 vs. Oregon in 2002)...Wilson’s previous career highs were 4 catches vs. USC, last season and 83 receiving yards at Cal in 2016.

• The Bruin secondary allowed the fewest touchdown passes among Pac-12 teams last season (12) and did not give up one in the opener against Texas A&M. Hawai’i recorded the first passing TDs of 2017 last week. Four times in the last eight games the secondary has kept the opponent passer from tossing a touchdown.

• The Bruins started two true freshmen (DL Jaelan Phillips and DB Darnay Holmes) on defense for the first time ever in a season-opener.• Quarterback Josh Rosen’s 491-yard passing effort vs. Texas A&M was the third-most in school history behind only Cade McNown who had 513

vs. Miami in 1998 and Drew Olson who threw for 510 vs. Arizona State in 2005. Rosen threw for 292 yards in the fourth quarter alone. His 477 total yards of offense ranks as the fourth-best mark in school history.

• Rosen’s 59 passing attempts vs. Texas A&M were the second-most in school history (Mike Fafaul 70 vs. Utah, 2016) ... Rosen’s 35 completions also rank second behind Fafaul’s total of 40 in that same Utah game.

• UCLA had six sacks vs. Texas A&M, the most since producing the same number vs. Washington State in 2015.• Adarius Pickett recorded a career-best 11 tackles vs. Texas A&M. He also got a hand on the last field goal attempt by Texas A&M which would

have put the Aggies in front 47-31 with a little over eight minutes to play. Pickett also served as the Bruin punt returner.• Darren Andrews’ 12 catches vs. Texas A&M are the fourth-most catches in a game by a Bruin ... Only Wilson (15), Stokes (14) and Payton (14)

have made more in a contest. Last season, Andrews became the 35th Bruin to reach the 1,000-receiving yards mark (vs. Colorado) ... The two previous seasons, Andrews hauled in 98 passes for 1,152 yards and no returning Pac-12 player had caught more passes than Andrews over those two previous seasons (CU’s Shay Fields also had 98 entering play in 2017).

• Wilson’s (15) and Andrews’ (12) total of 27 catches vs. A&M made them the most productive receiving tandem in Bruin single-game history. • The Texas A&M game marked the second time in school history UCLA has had three 100-yard receivers in the same contest --- Caleb WIlson

(208), Darren Andrews (142), Jordan Lasley (100). The only other time was in a 2005 game vs. Arizona State (Chris Markey 120, Joe Cowan 109, Marcedes Lewis 108).

• Punter Stefan Flintoft boomed a 63-yarder in the first quarter against Texas A&M which was the longest of his career.• The Bruin comeback from 34 points down (10-44 with 4:08 remaining in the 3rd quarter ranks as the second-greatest number of points over-

come to win a game between FBS Teams --- Michigan State rallied from a 35-point deficit (3-38 at 9:54 of 3rd quarter) against Northwestern in a 41-38 win during a 2006 game.

• In five of the eight Bruin losses in 2016, UCLA had the ball with a final possession and an opportunity to tie or take the lead.• UCLA has won 28 straight overall games and 47 straight regular season games in which it has held the opponent to less than 20 points (last

No. 42 - THE LAST SEASON ON THE GRIDIRON In 2014, on the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s arrival at UCLA, Athletics Director Dan Guerrero announced that the school was retiring number 42 across all sports. While he wore several numbers at UCLA, Jackie Robinson made the number 42 as iconic as the man himself. Then freshman linebacker Kenny Young was able to continue wearing the number for the duration of his Bruin career and now enters his senior season in 2017. In conjunction with UCLA, the City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Operating Committee, the Rose Bowl subsequently unveiled Robinson’s iconic #42 near the east scoreboard and have made it a permanent fixture in the stadium. UCLA has permanently displayed Robinson’s number 42 inside each of its athletic competition venues. In addition, a series of 22 athletic and recreation facilities across campus were named the Jackie Robinson Athletics and Recreation Complex. Chief among the campus’ recognition of the complex is an in-ground number 42 at each entry point to UCLA’s training centers, competition sites, fields and stadiums as a reminder of Robinson’s tremendous courage in the face of adversity. From 1939 to 1941, Robinson starred in four sports at UCLA. In football, Robinson played both offense and defense, returned punts, caught and threw passes, kicked extra points and in the process, earned honorable mention All-American accolades. In basketball, he twice led the Pacific Coast Conference in scoring. In track, he won the NCAA championship in the broad jump. And in baseball, he began his legendary journey as a highly-regarded shortstop for the Bruins.

2017 UCLA FOOTBALL

UCLA HEAD COACH JIM MORA On December 10, 2011, former Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora was named UCLA’s 17th head coach in school history. In his five-plus seasons at the helm, Mora has led the Bruins to a pair of school-record tying 10-win seasons, four bowl games, a Pac-12 South Division Championship. His Bruin teams have produced four of the top five best total offense season outputs in school history, as well as, the school single-game mark. Twenty-five Bruins have heard their names called in the past five NFL Drafts, including a first-round selection in four of the past five drafts.

In 2016, the Bruins produced several top 25 national rankings in numerous offensive and defensive categories and had three standouts selected to the first-team All-Pac-12 squad. On defense, the team pass defense efficiency rating was seventh in the nation (105.8) and the total of 12 opponent touchdown passes was the fewest allowed by a conference school. Takkarist McKinley, a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, ranked among the top 11 in the nation, and second in the Pac-12, in both sacks (0.91/g) and tackles for loss (1.6/g). McKinley was joined on the All-Pac-12 first team by Jayon Brown, who topped the

Pac-12 and ranked ninth in the nation in total tackles (9.9/g). Kenny Young, sixth in the league in tackles (7.5), was named second-team All-Pac-12.

On offense, UCLA ranked 19th in the nation in passing offense with its 295.6 passing yards per game average. Center Scott Quessenberry was named a first-team All-Pac-12 performer. TE Nate Iese and OT Conor McDermott, a draft pick of the World Champion Patriots, earned second-team recognition. Five Bruins in all were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, making for a total of 21 players chosen in the past four drafts, the most over a four-year period since the 1989-92 drafts produced 23 picks. The total of 25 players selected in the last five drafts is the most of any Pac-12 school during that stretch.

The 2015 season saw Mora equal Terry Donahue’s school-best four-year win mark of 37 contests, extend the school’s win streak in games away from the Rose Bowl to a school record total of 12 and participate in a fourth straight bowl game. Eight Bruins, including first-round selection Kenny Clark and second-round pick Myles Jack, were chosen in the draft, the most by the program since 1988. The total of eight players selected in the draft was the most of any Pac-12 school and the most UCLA has ever had picked in the seven round draft format. Ka’imi Fairbairn was the program’s second Lou Groza Award winner and became the conference’s all-time leading scorer; Jordan Payton emerged as the school’s all-time leading receiver; Paul Perkins produced a second-straight 1,000-yard season; freshman QB Josh Rosen established multiple school milestones.

In 2014, Mora guided the Bruins to the ninth 10-win season in school history, matching the school record for wins in a season. It marked the third straight year in which Mora’s Bruins had produced at least nine wins, a first in program history, and included a third consecutive win over USC. His 29 total wins are the most-ever by a UCLA coach in his initial three seasons on the job. Following the victory in the 2015 Valero Alamo Bowl, UCLA had captured wins in 10 straight games away from the Rose Bowl to match that school record, including a school-best 7-0 slate in 2014. That bowl win was also the team’s third victory of the season over an AP Top-15 ranked opponent, which was the most by the program since it defeated four such teams in 1952. The Bruins capped off the year ranked No. 10 in the final AP poll, the highest for the program since 1998.

Eric Kendricks, who became the school’s all-time leading tackler during the season, went on to be UCLA’s first recipient of the Butkus Award and the program’s second-straight winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy. Brett Hundley set numerous school career records, including bests for most touchdown passes and total offense. Perkins led the Pac-12 in rushing, the first time for a Bruin since 2001, and produced the second-highest rushing yardage total in school history.

In 2013, Mora led the Bruins to the eighth 10-win season in school history, tying the school mark for most wins in a season. UCLA remained in the AP rankings throughout the full season for the first time since 1998. LB Anthony Barr was selected as a first-team All-America and as the school’s first winner of the Lott IMPACT Trophy. A school record 18 true freshmen saw action during the season and seven true freshmen position players started in a game to match that school record. Five Bruins, the most by the program since 2002, were selected in the 2014 NFL Draft, headed by Barr’s pick at No. 9 overall by the Vikings.

In his first year, Mora guided the Bruins to the 2012 South Division Championship of the Pac-12 Conference and equaled the school-record for wins by a first-year coach, with nine. The Bruins, who played in the Holiday Bowl, set numerous offensive records during the course of the season, including establishing a new school rushing leader, in Johnathan Franklin, and several passing marks achieved by Hundley. On defense, Barr, in his first season as a linebacker, led the nation in sacks for a good portion of the year. Four players were selected in the 2013 NFL Draft, including defensive lineman Datone Jones, in the first round.

Mora, a former NFC Coach of the Year, came to UCLA after spending part of 2010 and most of 2011 as an analyst and contributor for the NFL Network and the NFL on FOX. He brought 25 years of NFL coaching acumen with him to UCLA, including four years of NFL head coaching experience while at the helm of the Atlanta Falcons (2004-06) and the Seattle Seahawks (2009).

Mora took over for Mike Holmgren as head coach of the Seahawks in 2009. He had served as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for Seattle in the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. The Seahawks went 10-6 and finished first in the NFC West in 2007 and won the Wild Card game in the playoffs.

In his initial season as the head coach of Atlanta in 2004, Mora directed the team to an 11-5 record, becoming just the eighth rookie head coach in NFL history to win 11 games and the 11th to bring home a Division title. The Falcons captured the NFC South title and earned an appearance in the NFC Championship Game for only the second time in franchise history. Mora was selected as the NFC Coach of the Year. The Falcons’ defense improved from a league ranking of 32nd in 2003 to No. 14 overall the next season, fueled by a league-leading and franchise record 48 quarterback sacks. Atlanta topped the NFL in rushing in all three of Mora’s seasons as head coach. In 2006, Michael Vick became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season.

Mora had joined the Falcons following a seven-season stint with the San Francisco 49ers (1997-2003). He spent his last five seasons in San Francisco as defensive coordinator. In his first year, the 49ers finished No. 1 in the NFL in total defense. The 1998 squad tied for No. 1 in the NFC in interceptions, with 21. The 1997 team advanced to the NFC Championship Game and had three defensive players voted to the Pro Bowl, while the 1998 and 2002 squads captured Wild Card Game wins.

From 1992-1996, Mora worked on the staff of his dad, Jim E. Mora, as the secondary coach with the New Orleans Saints. His defensive expertise began to take shape and the Saints boasted the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL during his first two years. In 1985, Mora broke into the NFL coaching ranks with the Chargers, under head coach Don Coryell. He spent seven seasons with San Diego, advancing from the league’s first quality control coaching position to defensive backs coach, while working for head coaches Coryell, Al Saunders and Dan Henning.

NFL Pro Bowlers who have played under coach Mora over the years include -- Anthony Barr, LB-Minnesota; Julian Peterson, LB-Seattle and San Francisco; Marcus Trufant, DB-Seattle; Allen Rossum, DB-Atlanta; Patrick Kerney, DL-Atlanta; Roderick Coleman, DL-Atlanta; Keith Brooking, LB-Atlanta; DeAngelo Hall, DB-Atlanta; Michael Vick, QB-Atlanta; Alge Crumpler, TE-Atlanta; Warrick Dunn, RB-Atlanta; Bryant Young, DL-San Francisco; Lance Schulters, DB-San Francisco; Merton Hanks, DB-San Francisco; Eric Allen, DB-New Orleans; Tyrone Hughes, DB-New Orleans; Gill Byrd, DB-San Diego.

Mora began his coaching career in 1984 at the University of Washington, where he joined the staff of Don James in the role of defensive assistant following a four-year playing career as a defensive back for the Huskies. While at UW, Mora had the opportunity to be a part of two Rose Bowl teams (1981-loss to Michigan/ 1982-win over Iowa) as a player, in addition to helping the Huskies land a berth in the 1985 Orange Bowl (win over Oklahoma) as a graduate assistant. During his five seasons in the Husky program, Washington compiled a 48-12 record, ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams on three occasions, and did not finish lower than second in the Pac-10 standings.

2017 GAME RECAPS GAME ONE: UCLA 45, Texas A&M 44

Sept. 3 - Rose BowlPASADENA, California (AP) -- Josh Rosen faked to spike the ball to stop the clock and instead threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Lasley with 43 sec-onds remaining and UCLA overcame a 34-point deficit to stun Texas A&M 45-44 on the first Sunday college football game ever played at the Rose Bowl.

Rosen was 35 of 59 for 491 yards on the night and four fourth-quarter touch-

downs. He threw for 292 yards and the four scoring passes all in the final 15 minutes to overcome a 27-point margin. “My career at UCLA, we’ve had a lot of times where the chips didn’t fall in our favor, and I think it’s time that finally it did,” Rosen said.

UCLA scored touchdowns on five straight possessions after trailing 44-10 with 4:08 to play in the third quarter. Rosen threw scoring passes of 9 and 42 yards to Darren Andrews before finding Theo Howard for a 16-yard score on a broken play with 3:08 remaining.

UCLA got the ball back with 2:39 to go and drove 66 yards in 10 plays, including an 11-yard throw and catch to tight end Caleb Wilson. Rosen capped the remarkable comeback with a fade to the far corner of the end zone after faking the spike. JJ Molson kicked the winning extra point.

“We were an inch away from losing that game probably 10 times,” said Rosen, who threw for the third-most yards in a game in school history. “I mean, for God’s sakes, I mean, that field goal would have put us out, and we just had an incredible surge and effort just to put probably a centimeter of a finger on the ball. I mean, the things that had to go right to win this game were incredible.”

Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond was stopped short of the first-down marker on a scramble with 20 seconds left to close out the big-gest FBS comeback since 2006.

“It was a lot of fun, huh? Glad you stuck around?” UCLA coach Jim Mora said. “We knew that this was not going to be an easy game, but we didn’t know we were going to be down 28 points at halftime. I was just so impressed by the way that they managed their emotions at halftime and then coming back in the second half.”

Wilson had a school-record 15 receptions for 203 yards, and Andrews had 12 catches for 143 yards. Rosen’s 491 yard passing effort was the third-highest in school history and tied him with Cade McNown for the most 300-yard passing games in school history with 11.

GAME TWO: UCLA 56, Hawai’i 23

Sept. 9 - Rose BowlPASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Josh Rosen was 22-for-25 for 329 yards passing and found Darren Andrews for three of his career-high five touchdown passes as UCLA defeated Hawaii 56-23 on Saturday.

With the 329-yard performance, Rosen moved past Cade McNown and into sole possession of the UCLA record for most 300-yard passing games in a career with 12. The five scoring passes were the most by a Bruin quarterback since Ben Olson tossed five in a 2007 win over Stanford.Andrews became the first UCLA receiver to haul in three scoring passes in a game since Marcedes Lewis caught three in a 2004 game versus Arizona. Theo Howard, who finished with a career-best seven catches, had his first 100-yard game (110). Howard and Caleb Wilson each caught a touchdown pass. Demetric Felton and Bolu Olorunfunmi each had 1-yard touchdown runs for the Bruins, who have scored touchdowns on 12 of 14 possessions with Rosen at quarterback dating back to the third quarter of their 45-44 comeback win over Texas A&M on Sunday.UH’s Dru Brown threw for 227 yards, with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Diocemy Saint Juste and a 2-yard score to John Ursua, as Hawaii saw its winning streak end at five games. Brown also threw an interception that was returned 30 yards for a touchdown by UCLA freshman

cornerback Darnay Holmes.

LAST MEETING SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 • ROSE BOWL • PASADENA, CALIF.ATTENDANCE: 72,098 • TV: PAC-12 NETWORKSPASADENA, Calif. – Brett Hundley passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns, Paul Perkins rushed for two scores and No. 11 UCLA survived a fourth-quarter Tiger comeback for a 42-35 victory over Memphis on Saturday night. Thomas Duarte caught two TD passes and linebacker Myles Jack rushed for his first score of the season for the Bruins (2-0), who held off the Tigers. Memphis safety Fritz Etienne returned an inteception for 17 yards for the tying score with 13:44 to play, moments after Doroland Dorceus’ 40-yard TD run. But Duarte caught a 33-yard TD pass with 10:52 left, and the Bruins’ defense made three late stops to secure their fourth straight win in a home opener. Kenneth Walker III caught an early 62-yard TD pass as the Bruins’ took a 14-7 early lead. The Bruins had little trouble scoring at the Rose Bowl, but their defense was tested against the Memphis offense led by future NFL first-round selection Lynch, which racked up 469 yards. Jack, the Bruins’ two-way star, saw action at running back for the first time this season, and he scored on a bruising 4-yard rush in the third quarter. The sophomore linebacker was the Pac-12’s offensive and defensive newcomer of the year last season.
