ADVANTAGES OF A THERMAL PROTECTOR / MOTOR PROTECTOR
Reusable
Unlike fuses and one-shot solutions, Protectors are
reusable components that will reset when the equipment
cools. If the fault still exists, the Protector will continue to
automatically protect the equipment.
Extended Equipment Lifetime
By protecting equipment from the effects of overheating
by cutting off the power supply, Protectors extend
equipment life and prevent damage occurring internally
and to the surrounding environment.
End User Problem Reduction
Problems for designers and manufacturers such as
product returns, regular breakdowns and in extreme
cases, destruction of property due to fire or short circuits
can be prevented through using Protectors.
Cost Reduction
As a Protector will reset automatically, replacement and
servicing costs are reduced over the long term as the
transformer, electrical motor, etc. continue to be protected
from heat damage.
Self-Hold
For equipment where automatic reset is not desirable,
Self-Hold Protectors are available. With Self-Hold,
equipment will remain disconnected from the power
source until the electrical supply is switched off.

Uchiya Thermostat uses a Part Numbering System for identification of Protectors.
Special requirements (i.e. LeadWire colour, strip length, etc.) should be detailed on all quotation requests or
orders made to Uchiya Thermostat.

PROTECTOR SELECTION
Switch TemperatureUchiya Thermostat produces Protectors with set switch
temperatures in steps of 5°C (i.e. 90, 95, 100, 105, …..).
Each set switch temperature has a tolerance of ±5°C, ±7°C or
±10°C depending on requirements.
Reset TemperatureProtectors have a set reset temperatures with a differential of
15k ~ 30K in steps of 5°C (i.e. 50, 55, 60, 65, …..).
Each set reset temperature has a tolerance of ±7°C, ±10°C or
±15°C depending on requirements.
LeadWire Construction & SizeAll insulated LeadWire supplied is UL and CSA approved.
Uchiya Thermostat uses American Wire Gauge (AWG) for
quoting LeadWire core thickness.
For convenience, the equivalent metric sizes are:

PROTECTOR TECHNOLOGY
Snap-ActionUchiya Thermostat use a specially formed BiMetal in the
Protectors to produce a Snap-Action Protector which
maintains the set temperature over thousands of cycles.
BiMetal ActionThe Protector design ensures that Snap-Action occurs at the
switching point. No Creep Action occurs during the switching
cycle, reducing the potential of sparking across the contacts.
Proven TechnologyUchiya Thermostat has produced over 10 Billion Protectors
for use in assemblies and equipment, in various operating
conditions and environments.
No Self-HeatingElectrical current does not pass through the BiMetal in the
Protectors. The risk of the Protector switching outside
specification due to the self-heating is eliminated.
Dual Spring MechanismIn the latest enclosed Protectors from Uchiya Thermostat, a
Dual Spring Mechanism using the Bimetal is used, which
has a high contact force for stable resistance, giving more
resistant to impact shock and magnetic interference.

Upper Limit: Not greater than 50°C above the switch

Contact ResistanceNot greater than 50mΩ between the terminals using
voltage drop method applying 1.0A.
Insulation StrengthFor enclosed Protectors, greater than 100M Ω between the
enclosure and terminals at 1000V DC.
Dielectric StrengthFor enclosed Protectors, 1500V AC for 1 minute or 2000V
AC for 2 seconds between the enclosure and terminals.

ENVIRONMENTAL & STORAGE INFORMATION
Lead-Free (RoHS)
All Uchiya Thermostat Protectors are Lead-Free, and contain
no lead in any of the constituents.
Storage
To obtain the optimum performance for the Protector, it needs
to be stored in the correct environment. When storing the
Protector, the Storage conditions should be:
* from -10°C to 40°C
* no more than 75% Rh
* free from direct sunlight and corrosive gas
(such as sulphurous gas, chlorine gas etc.)
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
Installation Considerations
It is not recommended to use the Protector in a volatile gas or
liquid environment.
Rated Voltage & Current
The Protector should be used within the rated voltage and
rated current level, otherwise the number of endurance cycles
will be lower than the original designed value.
If the Protector is used at a voltage and/or current that
exceeds its rating, the electrical contacts may melt and cause
a malfunction in the Protector.
Circuit Protection
A circuit protection circuit between the contacts is not
recommended when designing the Protector circuit. In the
case of a circuit that generates excessive inrush current (such
as condenser load, lamp load, etc.); it may require the use of a
current limiter.
LeadWire
If the LeadWire is bent when the Protector is mounted, the
radius should be at least twice the diameter of the LeadWire,
in order not to apply excessive pressure at the root of the
LeadWire.

Verification should be carried out to ensure that the Protector
functions properly in the designed circuit using

The cross-bar contacts consist of an
alloy of Platinum, Gold and Silver (P.G.S.),
giving consistent low resistance over
time and preventing corrosion build-up.
The compact size and unique design of
the G Type (UP6 Series) allows it to fit
into tight spaces in applications and to
be mounted onto PCB Boards.
The PBT enclosure offers both thermal
conductivity and electrical insulation with
no need for additional insulation sleeves.

Equipped with a parallel PTC resistance
heater that works for 125V and 250V
applications, the EP4P Series is a
versatile Self-Hold Protector from Uchiya.
The contacts open on temperature rise.
The PTC heater turns on keeping the
contacts open above –20°C. The power
needs to be removed to allow the contacts
to close.
With its small and compact size, the
EP4P Series is ideal for use in protecting
devices where automatic reset could
cause eventual application failure.

The UB8P Series is the smallest open frame
Self-Hold Thermal Protector produced by
Uchiya Thermostat for AC applications up to
10A (250V) and 16A (125V).
With a bimetallic element allowing for a quick
thermal response to temperature rise and a
PTC resistance heater that allows for both
125V and 250V applications, the UB8P Series
is a most versatile Self-Hold Protector.
On temperature
rise, the contacts
open. A 25mA
current (approx.)
will flow through
the circuit
(depending on
temperature and
voltage)
maintaining the
UB8P Series
Protector open low temperatures.
The PTC Resistance heater keeps the
contacts in the UB8P Series open until the
power is removed, allowing the Protector to
cool and reset.
With its small size, lightweight design and
reliability, the UB8P Series is ideal for use in
protecting critical devices where automatic
reset could cause eventual application failure.

UCHIYA BPF SERIES
The BPF Series is the next generation
of Battery Pack Protector and Thermal
Protector with a very high ultimate trip
current and small resistance between
the terminals, produced by Uchiya
Thermostat for DC applications up to
15A (15V).
With its dual spring technology and
high contact pressure, the BPF Series is
capable of withstanding large shocks
and impacts without interruption of the
DC current by the Protector.
Internally in the BPF Series, low
resistance materials are used, so that
the uses of the BPF Series are wide
from Battery Pack Protection to
Automotive Motor Protection.
The opposite side terminal deign of the
BPF Series makes installation on
applications more convenient.
The compact size and unique design of
the BPF Series fitting into tight spaces
in rechargeable battery applications, to
be mounted onto PCB Boards and for
use in small Automotive motors.
