Accept your placeWe hope you will decide to accept the place that has been offered to you in UCD The sooner you do this the sooner you can register Check your CAO offer notice carefully and follow the instructions to accept your place online before the reply date

Register online with UCDThree working days after you accept go to wwwucdie On the homepage under the main picture enter your UCD Connect log-in (CAO number) and password (date of birth ddmmyy) We advise you to change your password immediately using the Password Change Tool in the IT Services tab in UCD Connect Next click on the SISWeb link in the First Year tab You can register online from here Start by filling in your personal details

Attend an It Induction CourseIT Induction Courses are run all day during Orientation Week These courses are the best way to learn quickly how to use the Universityrsquos IT systems which are likely to be very different from those you are familiar with More information on the IT induction courses and IT systems can be found on page 9

DeferralIf you have decided that you would like to take a year out before starting at university you may want to defer your place If this is the case DO NOT accept your offer of a place through the CAO

Instead email admissionsucdie or write a letter immediately to Admissions UCD Registry UCD Belfield Dublin 4 giving the following information

bull Your namebull CAO numberbull Course offeredbull Reason for wishing to defer

NOTE Email requests will only be accepted from the email address used in your CAO application

The emailletter should normally arrive in Admissions at least two days before the reply date on the offer notice If the deferral is granted you must apply again next year via the CAO You will receive a letter with full instructions

CancellingIf you accept your place and then change your mind please email admissionsucdie to let us know Make sure to quote your application number and the name of the course you are cancelling It is really important that you let us know so that we can offer the place to somebody else However you donrsquot need to do this if you are accepting another place via CAO

UCD Orientation Week takes place from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 September 2013 This is a compulsory week for new students only in which we prepare a timetable of academic and social events to introduce you to your new community You will be assisted and guided by the Orientation Guides and Peer Mentors It is a great week to get involved in Clubs and Societies too Below you will find information about Orientation Week and the events that are taking place to help you settle into college

The UCD Orientation Guides and Peer Mentors are current students who have volunteered to return to college a week early to help you settle in and welcome you into the UCD Community They can be seen wearing blue t-shirts with the Orientation Week logo and are there to help you

UCD Mobile Download the UCD AppBefore arriving on campus you can download a free app called lsquoUCD Mobilersquo for both Apple and Android devices It includes an interactive map of the campus (so you know where to go) Blackboard Mobile Learn so you can check Blackboard content and announcements as well as a library catalogue search function news updates an events calendar sports fixtures and much more

It Induction CoursesIT Induction Courses run for the duration of Orientation Week They are held in the Daedalus Building on the Belfield campus It is important to attend this course so you know how to use the Universityrsquos IT systems which are different from what you might be used to using This 20 minute course will introduce you to all the IT services available at UCD and where to get help if you need it On finishing the course each student gets a FREE 8GB disk key ndash thatrsquos enough space to hold all your essays and much more

UCD Connect ndash access to important servicesEach student in UCD is provided with a UCD Connect account where a wide range of services can be accessed from anywhere through the internet whether you are on campus at home or travelling abroad Through UCD Connect you get 30GB combined Gmail and Google Drive storage plus a personal calendar with your student timetable in it All of these can be synced to your smartphone

Your personalised UCD email address will be used for official UCD correspondence including regular updates and bulletins from the Vice-President for Students and academic and exams information Please make sure that you check it regularly

You also have 2GB web file storage space (Connect Files) and access to the Universityrsquos eLearning environment (Blackboard) where you can submit assignments check announcements and use wikis and blogs Useful software applications are also available in UCD Connect for downloading or streaming

Through UCD Connect you can see your own course schedule exam results past exam papers and college registration details Your initial log-in is your CAO number (or UCD student number if yoursquove been here before) and your password is your date of birth (DDMMYY) For your own security you should change your password on first log-in

HoW to ReGISteR oNlINe

Before your begin your registration visit wwwucdieincomingstudents for useful information including step-by-step tutorials

As an incoming undergraduate student you can begin online registration within three working days of accepting your CAO offer For example if you

Accept your CAO offer Monday 19 August 2013 500pm You will be able to go online Thursday 22 August 2013 afternoon

Step 1 Personal Information

The first thing you need to do is go to wwwucdie and use your log-in (CAO number or your UCD student number if you have studied in UCD before) and password date of birth (ddmmyy) to access UCD Connect You are advised to change your password immediately using the Password Change Tool in the IT Services tab in UCD Connect Click on the SIS Web link which can be found under the First Year tab in UCD Connect When you enter for the first time you will be required to agree to the Terms of Usage Pressing the Continue button is the same as signing a document so make sure that you read this very carefully Once you press Continue you will be taken to another page On this page please click enter registration ProCess This will confirm your registration to your programme for 201314

The next page you will see is the WelCome to uCD page (Note If registering to BA and BSocSc programmes please refer to the Programme Requirements tab) Here you will be asked to do the following

i Fill in your personal details eg your address or amend existing details (from your application information) If you have applied for a grant please include your Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) grant application number in the field provided

ii Answer a short survey

iii If registering for certain Life Sciences programmes you will be asked to complete the Programme Requirements tab

iv Pay your fees online (see fees information on page 17)

v Make sure you upload your photo online by the 30 August deadline so that you can pick up your Student Card (UCARD during Orientation Week

You must complete any required fields that are empty and marked with an asterisk symbol () Some of your personal information (eg name permanent address) will be filled automatically from your CAO application details Please check it carefully and amend as necessary If your term address is different to your home address please be sure to enter it Please enter your emergency contact details in the fields provided Certain information such as your name and date of birth cannot be changed onlineIf you do need to change these details please note that this can only be arranged at the Student Desk in the Tierney Building

IMPORTANT You must upload your photo before you can collect your Student Card (UCARD)



You can collect your Student Card (UCARD) during Orientation Week once you have completed Step 1 The collection point date and time can be found on your Orientation Week Timetable available to download at wwwucdieincomingstudents

If the name on your passportbirth certificate differs from the one used on your CAO application then you may not be able to collect your card until after your name has been updated on your student record

Step 2 Module Registration

Book your Registration Start Time On Wednesday 28 August 2013 log into SISWeb to book your Registration Start Time This Start Time will be the datetime from which you may begin your module registration Once you book an email will be sent to your UCD Connect account confirming your Start Time Go to wwwucdiestudentsregistration for more information

Check what modules are available to your programme Before you begin this step you should know what modules are part of your programme and the choices you will need to make Go to wwwucdieincomingstudents and click on the Course Search link for more information on your UCD Programme

Pick your modules Online module registration begins on Thursday 29 August 2013 - check your UCD email for your individual Start Time

In this step you need to record your module choices

Core modules modules you must study as part of your programme

Option modules modules you can choose from within your programme

Elective modules modules you may select from any subject across UCD

The modules which are core to your programme (if any) will already have been assigned to you You can also choose option and elective modules if you wish It is advised that you check your eligibility for your chosen module as you register You donrsquot want to waste time attending a module that you are not eligible for and if you do not check your eligibility at the start of the year then you may be left with very little time to change your module

Popular option and in-programme elective modules will fill up quickly so it is important to register as early as possible

Online module registration closes at 500pm on Friday 20 September 2013

Online help is available wherever you see the information icon


It is recommended that you complete your module registration in the following sequence

SubjectStream First Year Arts Social Science and Science students You must choose your subjects in this section as directed

Arts and Science students You should read the information leaflet included in your pack (Arts students only) or the Science Stage 1 Guide sent by email (Science students only) carefully before you start choosing your modules

Arts StudentsSocial Science StudentsIn the Selected SubjectsStreams section you will see subject(s) to which you are already registered You may also pick the other subject(s) that you wish to study

bull The subjects available to you are displayed under Available SubjectsStreams For Arts students they are arranged in groups (A-F) and you can only choose one subject from each group due to timetable constraints

bull To choose a subject area click on seleCt You will then be asked to confirm your subject choice Do this by clicking on Sure

bull Your choice will appear in a section called seleCteD subjeCtsstreams just above the grid Remember that the choices you make here will have an impact on the future stages of your degree

bull In your first year (called Stage 1) you will normally take 12 modules over two semesters totalling 60 credits and you can study a number of subjects

You can choose all 60 credits from the SubjectStream page or you can choose 55 credits from here

Arts students must register to a 5 credit module called Introduction to Arts and can choose 1 elective module Social Science students must register to a 5 credit module called lsquoIntroduction to Social Sciencersquo and can choose 1 elective module Once you are happy with your choices make sure that you choose the modules you need for your subject areas Do this on the CoreoPtions section

Science Students Please read the Science Stage 1 Guide which was emailed to you when you received your offer This guide is also available at wwwucdiescience


CoreoptionsThis page shows your Core Modules These modules are compulsory for you to study as part of your programme You may already be registered to these modules ndash you will see Pre -seleCteD beside these modules In some instances you are required to select your core modules in which case click seleCt moDule Choose time

You will also need to select your Option Modules

bull Click on seleCt moDule beside the module of your choicebull When you click on seleCt moDule an information box will appear for that module Click on

the different headings to read about that module Always read the information in lsquoAm I eligible to take this modulersquo before you make your decision

bull If there is a choice of time slots for a particular lecture a calendar will display the available time slots on offer to you (highlighted in blue) Scroll down to see all the time slots on offer

bull Select the time slot that suits best Click on register to confirm your choice and return to the CoreOptions page

bull Make sure that you register to all of the Option Modules requiredbull You may drop or swap modules by clicking on DroPsWaP beside a chosen module

Main labs and tutorialsRemember to register to any Laboratories Tutorials or Practicals that are part of your modules

Sometimes your School will look after your registration to any neccesary LabsTutorials In this instance you will see a message saying automatiCally registereD or ContaCt sChool

electivesOnce you are registered to your core and option moduleslabstutorials you can choose elective modules (generally two elective modules = 10 credits) Please read the information text at the top of the page before picking electives

You can choose from In-Programme electives (modules from within your programme) or All Electives (modules from any subject across UCD) Go to wwwucdiestudentselectiveshtml for more information

Searching for an electivebull If you want to search for an In-Programme elective simply click on

Search and the relevant modules will be displayed to youbull If you wish to search All Electives go to the shoW moDules For

section and select the All option Then select your criteria (eg Category Subject) and click on searCh to get a list of relevant modules

You can also search for electives in the following ways by Subject by School Keyword Search Time Slot Search

To start a new Elective search you must always click on Clear searCh and then enter your new information

Choosing an electiveChoose a module from the list that appears and click on the module title An information box will appear

Click on the different headings to read about that module Always read the information in lsquoAm I eligible to take this modulersquo before you make your decision

If you wish to choose the module simply click Register If there is a choice of time slots for a particular lecture you will be able to choose the one that suits your timetable best from the calendar displayed Your elective choices will be recorded in the Electives Modules section of the page

bull If you see ConFirmeD beside an elective choice that means that you have a place in it In most cases registration to an In-Programme elective will be confirmed immediately and will not be part of random allocation

bull If you see Provisional beside an elective choice it means that places for that module will be randomly allocated on the afternoon of Friday 6 September and Saturday 7 September Please note that prior to Friday 6 September confirmed places are available on In-Programme Electives only

If you donrsquot have access to a computer at home or nearby in a local library or Internet cafeacute donrsquot worry ndash you will be able to use the computers in the Assisted Registration Lab (see page 16) or there are lots of Stand Up and Surf (SUAS) PCs available for you to use around campus



Check your UCD Connect email on the morning of Saturday 7 September to see if you were successful in getting your chosen modules If you did not get a place on your original choice you can choose an alternative module at this stage

Be sure to click on hiDe Full moDules (in the Show Modules For Section) to exclude any modules that do not currently have places available

At this point the Your Summary page will show you a summary of the personal information that you have provided so far and the modules to which you are registered If you have any personal information left to complete or any modules still to choose you should return to the relevant page and complete the step You will be able to return to the relevant page from the your summary page

After you have attended your Academic Advisory meeting you may want to review your module choices When you are happy with your choice print off your timetable so that you know the time and location of your first lecture on Monday 9 September

You need to register online before you can get your Student Card (UCARD) but you will have until Friday 20 September to change your mind about your modules for the first semester For your choice of Semester 2 elective modules you will have an opportunity in early January 2013 to change your mind online if you wish

Note for the very small number of students who register late online (ie those registering from Monday 2 September onwards) your Student Card (UCARD) will be available for collection one day after you have completed Step 1 of online registration

FeeS INFoRMAtIoNPaying your fees

In order to be a fully registered student you must make the appropriate minimum payment by Sunday 8 September Students eligible for lsquoFree Tuitionrsquo will pay a minimum of one third (the Student Contribution Charge is euro2500 and the Student Centre Levy is euro208 a total of euro2708 One third of this is euro90233) Other students must pay a minimum of 50 to be fully registered Fees may be paid online using a debit or credit card and by logging onto UCD Connect account and clicking Pay Fees In the lsquoFees Paymentrsquo section you will see the amount you have been assessed as owing Enter the amount in the box provided Alternatively if you prefer to have a UCD Fee Payment Giro posted to your home address this may be requested through UCD Connect This form may be used to pay fees at any bank in the Republic of Ireland

Tax relief is available for specified tuition fees Details on tax relief can be found at wwwucdieregistryadminservicesfeestax_reliefhtm or at wwwrevenueie Enquiries about tax relief should be directed to the Revenue Commissioners

Please note If you already hold a university degree you will be liable for full fees for all years of an undergraduate degree programme If you have attended and not completed a third level degree diploma or certificate course in the past five years you will be liable for fees for the equivalent period of attendance You must provide confirmation of the period of registration from any institution previously attended


Criteria for eligibility for lsquofreersquo feesThe Irish Exchequer will pay tuition fees to the University on behalf of students registered for full-time undergraduate degree programmes (of minimum two yearsrsquo duration) who meet ALL the criteria as follows

bull EUEEASwiss nationals with no previous third level attendancebull Those who have been permanently resident in an EU Member State for three of the five years

prior to entry to university

If you do not meet the above conditions you may be liable for the full programme fee as listed on wwwucdiefees

Fee implications of withdrawing for a lsquofree feesrsquo studentYou must speak to your Programme Office and notify UCD of your intention to withdraw on or before 1 October 2013 In order to officially withdraw you must complete a withdrawal form at your Programme Office and return your Student Card (UCARD) The date of receipt of the written notification will be taken as the withdrawal date If this date is on or before 1 October 2013 you will receive a full refund of any payments made in respect of the Student Contribution Charge or Student Centre Levy You will be liable for fees if you withdraw after the 1 October deadline Please visit wwwucdieregistryadminservicesfees for further details


Higher education Grant SchemeIf you have applied for a Higher Education Grant through Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) you must provide us with your SUSI application number in the Personal Details section in the Online Registration System This is a 13-digit alpha numeric number beginning with lsquoWrsquo or lsquoSrsquo that you will have received from SUSI This will allow us to communicate with SUSI regarding the outcome of your grant application

All students in receipt of a Higher Education Grant must pay the Student Centre Levy of euro208 plus any fees not payable under the grant scheme Please note that your registration will not be complete until the appropriate fees have been paid If you have been approved for a grant or have an application pending you may pay one third of the Student Centre Levy plus any fees not covered by the grant as your minimum payment by the first payment date

If your grant is approved before October SUSI will inform UCD directly and they will be invoiced for the portion of your fees payable under the grant scheme Grant holders whose grant includes maintenance will have these maintenance payments paid into their bank account

If your grant has not been approved by 15 October you will be required to pay one third of your total fee liability If your grant is subsequently approved any refund due will be made to you when SUSI pays the fee to UCD on your behalf

If you have not yet applied for a grant and think you may be eligible you should do so immediately All relevant information including criteria for eligibility and the application process can be found at wwwstudentfinanceie

Financial Support in UCDUCD has a range of financial supports to help students who encounter financial difficulties while at UCD These funds are supported by money received from the European Social Fund (ESF) This funding can vary from year to year If you find yourself in financial difficulties please contact one of the following SU Welfare Officer Student Advisers or Chaplains who will provide you with information on the supports available for you

UCD Sport UCD Student Centre Sport amp FitnessLife at university is not just about lectures and study there is so much more to being at UCD You will find that sports societies and social life are vital ingredients of your university experience The Student Centre UCD Sport and the UCD Sport amp Fitness complex are the home of student life on campus The recently completed development provides our students with the most diverse student facility of any university in Ireland

Convenors These are effectively heads of schools for the class reps So there is a convenor for every college in UCD Arts Human Sciences Engineering and Architecture Science Business and Law Agriculture and Veterinary and Health Science They are the go-to guygirl for when there is a problem that a class rep canrsquot deal with on their own or even if they just need a little help your college convenor is always on call to lend a hand
