Abstract

Internships provide students with opportunities to test their skills in the work area. It is the bridge

the gap between academia and practice. This internship proposes is to enhance the network

background and learn the network infrastructure in UBL Bank. It is one of the leading banks in

Pakistan and well known in world due to its appearance in the international market. I had a

general idea about the banking, but once I practically started the internship in banking field I

observed much about banking, I realized the importance and significance of commercial banking

for the development of economy. To adjust myself in such a large commercial organization was

not an easy task, networks, security, data management and online services are not easy to handle,

there are lot of issues on daily basis. My concern area related to my background was the

networks, communication can be secure and it cannot fully protected with different malicious

activities but it can be handle with good management skills . The purpose of this report is to

evaluate the performance of UBL in networks give concrete recommendation for further

improvement. Although the bank is functioning satisfactory, but the path to ultimate success is

still full of threats and hurdles. It was a great experience to work there and contribute

handsomely in the process of appraising its pros and cons and feeling to be a significant part of

the bank.

Network Background A network is defined as physical connectivity between two or more than two devices which

share the information and data. Some common types of networks are listed below.

Local Area Network

Metropolitan area network

Wide Area Network

Local Area Network (LAN) Local Area Network (LAN) is a group of computers and devices in close proximity that share a

common communication by leased line or wireless link. It usually connects devices to share the

resources of a single processor or server within a small area like an office building and home

network. The server has applications and data storage which is shared by multiple computer

users.

A personal area network (PAN) is used for communication among computer and other

communicating and information giving devices. For example, personal computers, printers, fax

machines, telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), scanners, and even video game

consoles. Personal area network (PAN) may also include the wired and wireless connections

between the devices.

Metropolitan area network A Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) spans a metropolitan area or region larger than that

covered by local area network (LAN), but it is smaller than the area covered by a wide area

network (WAN). However, this term applies to the interconnection of networks in a city or

single large area. The metropolitan network is used for interconnection of several local area

connections by bridging them with backbone leased lines. For example, a chain of educational

institute's colleges could be linked by a metropolitan area network (MAN). A single branch

might use a Campus Area Network, but the entire academic institution would use a metropolitan

area network (MAN) to track the students' progress across different classrooms and majors.

Wide Area Network A wide area network covers a relatively broad geographic area and quite often uses transmission

services provided by common carriers, for example, telephone companies and other ISP

provider. Business and government entities utilize WANs to relay data among employees,

clients, buyers, and suppliers from various geographical locations. The speed of bandwidth on

wide area network depends on the connection that may increase or decrease with the distance.

Networks can be defined by connection with cables, radio frequency or wireless.

LAN Network Management through Device Manager In figure 1 a basic interface DM that have the IP list to connect the different location Switch by

virtually and operate it. It can also manage the user problem during packet transmission.

Figure 1

In Figure 1.1 shows the switch 420-24T interface. The green light shows the users in VLAN are

connected and orange light show the user are not connected. The left panel shows the status with

port connection and also with MAC address. This panel shows the user Network card

Identification (NIC) with user MAC addresses, which might be help to track the user activity or

connection issues.

In figure 1.3 shows the user IP address and assigned the VLAN ID’s. There are two types of

access one is simple access and other is trunk access.

In figure 1.4 shown the VLAN ID of every user and each ID has its own identity. In this picture

every user has multiple VLAN and segment ID that shows that, if one port has some connectivity

problem entity may be switch another port.

Figure 1.4

Figure 1.5 shows the port members that are add in VLAN IDs pressed numbers are showing port

Numbers and rest of them are not in VLAN.

Network Scanner A network scanner is applications that analyze the traffic and IP addresses which assure that

users are accessing the internet with specific IP addresses and user name.

Conclusion Communication among the devices with multiple service providers could be secure with better

management and good security policies. UBL network infrastructure works with different

company vendors and they provide the scalability and accountability of data which make sure the

connectivity among the users is secure and confidential between the main data base to user.

The overall conclusion of this internship to learn the communication between the branches,

connectivity of branches with Virtually Local area network (VLAN), diagnose the problem and

solve the issues without any user disturbance. The major issue was the user ends, unplug the

network issues that may be from the switch room or cable lose problem from the Network

interface controller (NIC).

This internship is a great achievement and will be helpful my future career level. I have learned

lot of things regarding management of networks in local area, different kind of troubleshooting

in a stress environment. Management of people is one of the core key of every successive

organization and I think I have learned these all things from UBL.

I am really great full of all networks team member who thought and understand basic networks

operation, security system and troubleshooting of networks and also teach me how to solve the

problems.
