universitydegree-creditorcontinuingeducationnon-creditcourses.Certificate-creditcoursesare

measuredinhoursofinstruction.

FundamentalsofBusinessAnalysis

Startingwithfoundationalknowledgeoftheroleandfunctionofthebusinessanalyst,identify,analyze

anddesignbusinessanalysisprocessestoimprovebusinessworkflowsinbothwaterfallandagile

methodologies.Throughexaminationofacasestudy,applyinterviewingandelicitationtechniques,exploreEnterpriseResourcePlanning(ERP)systemsandmakerecommendations.Constructabusiness

analysisplanthatincorporatesprocess-modellingdiagrams.ThecoursefollowsInternationalInstitute

ofBusinessAnalysis™(IIBA®)industrystandardsandincludesaPDFversionofAGuidetotheBusinessAnalysisBodyofKnowledge®(BABOK®Guide)aswellasacopyoftheAgileExtensiontotheBABOK®

Guide.

ThisisafundamentalscoursethatpreparesparticipantsforthenextsixcoursesoftheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysisbyintroducingkeyterminologyandconceptsaddressedinthelatermoredetailed

coursesofthisprogram.

Projectmanagementtechniquesandframeworksarevaluabletoolswhenappliedtobusinessanalysis.

Lookatprojectscope,includingplanning,management,changecontrol,andevaluationfromanapplied

businessanalysisperspective.Discoverhowtoorganizeandmanageresourcesinsuchwaythattheprojectiscompletedandobjectivesaremetwithindefinedscope,quality,timeandcostconstraints.

DevelopwritingskillsthatmeetcommunicationbestpracticesinthecontextofaBArole.Inaclear,

concise,andcompellingmannerlearntoproducedocumentsthatareaccessibleandunderstandabletonon-technicalaudiences.Effectivelycommunicatefindingsandprovidefeedbackthatsatisfiesboth


internalandexternalreportingstandards.Inadditiontobusinesswritingandediting,createother

RequirementsGathering,AnalysisandDocumentation

Developarequirements-gatheringapproachtoenterpriseandsystemsanalysis,startingwithaclearproblemstatementthatidentifiesthedirectionforpotentialsolutions.Examineavarietyofsystems

solutionsandlearntoapplybestpracticemethods,processes,andtoolsinvolvedingathering,

managing,analyzing,evaluating,validating,andverifyingrequirementstoensuresuccess.Interprettheserequirementsinthecontextofthebusiness,functionalandnon-functionalrequirements.Learn

towriteaudience-appropriaterequirementsdocumentationandmakerecommendationsforthebest

businesssolutions.


Management,LeadershipandTeamBuildingforBusinessAnalystsandProgramManagers

Examineorganizationalbehaviourandfocusoneffectiveleadershipandmanagementskills,includingcoachingandcross-functionalteambuildinginthecontextofbusinessanalysisandprogram

managementjobfunctions,andcasestudies.Developstrategiesfordealingwithuncertaintyarounda

program,managingcompetinginterests,andbuildingandmotivatinghighperformanceteams.Richwithexamplesanddiscussionpoints,thiscourseinspiresleadershipandputspracticalmanagement

onlinetutorsguideandgradethroughcontinuousemailcommunication,onlinediscussions,

assignmentsandprojectstoensurethatstudentsgetthemostoutoftheirlearningexperience.

LearningMethodsCoursematerialispresentedinaninformation-intensiveway,focusingonconceptsandtechniques.Participantsareexpectedtopracticeandapplywhattheylearninordertodevelopanin-depth

understandingofbusinessanalysis,whichcanonlybegainedwithexperienceandconceptapplication.

AssessmentMethodsProgramparticipantsareassessedaccordingtoUniversityassessmentguidelinestoensuresuccessfulacquisitionofskillsandconceptspresentedincoursematerials.Assessmentisbasedonparticipation,

tests,assignmentsandprojects.


GraduationCriteria

TobegrantedtheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysis,participantsmustsuccessfullycompleterequiredcourseworkanddemonstratecompetencyinbusinessanalysisbyearningaminimumpassing

gradeof60%ineachofthesevencourses.

Asinatypicaleducationalprogram,studentsareobligatedtomakeupforincompleteorfailedcoursesbyretakingthecourseontheirowntimeandattheirownexpense.

CourseCompletionPriortoProgramApplicationParticipantsmaytaketheFundamentalsofBusinessAnalysiscoursepriortoapplyingtotheUBC

CertificateinBusinessAnalysisbutmustbeacceptedintotheprogrambeforeregisteringforremainingbusinessanalysiscourses.

Inordertoreceivecertificatecreditforcoursestakenpriortoapplyingtotheprogram,participants

mustcompleteallassignments,quizzesandotherformsofassessmentinthecourse.

ProgramFeesA$200CADnon-refundableadministrationfeeispayableonceyouareadmittedtotheprogram.Thisfee

confirmsyourregistrationintheprogram.Thereisnofeetosubmitanapplicationform.

Coursefeesarepaidonacourse-by-coursebasis($740-$1,410CADpercourse).Totalcertificatecostincludingtheadministrationfeeis$8,155CAD.Feesaredueatthetimeofcourseregistrationandmaybe

encompassesasignificantamountofreading,includingcasestudies,lecturesandwhitepapersinconjunctionwithonlinelearningactivitiessuchasgroupdiscussions,independentstudy,videosand

research.Participantsareassessedontests,participation,individualandgroupprojects.

Participantschoosetheirowncourseloadforeachtermbutitisrecommendedthatstudentsdonotenrolinmorethanonecourseatatime.Notethattheprogramcompletiontimelinesaredependent

oncourseschedulingandtheavailabilityofcourses.

ContinuingStudieshasthreeterms:fall,winter,andspring/summer.ThefalltermextendsfromSeptembertoDecember,thewintertermfromJanuarytoApril,andthespring/summertermfromMay

toAugust.

ParticipantsmustcompleteallrequirementsforgraduationwithintwoyearsofadmissiontotheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysis.

OnlineParticipationGuidelinesUBCSauderContinuingBusinessStudies’onlinelearningcoursesandprogramsaredesigned,

developedanddeliveredinboth100%onlineandblended(combiningfacetofaceandonlinecomponents)formats.Ourcoursesarebasedonadultlearningprincipleswhichstatethatadult

learners:

Ourgoalistohelpfosterapositivelearningexperience.Tothisend,participantsareexpectedtohavea

“presence”online,andtobecomepartofthelearningcommunitybycontributingtotheonlinediscussionforumsandparticipatinginanyinteractiveaspectsoftheprogram.Insomecases,this

contributionissubjecttoformalassessment;thespecificgradeattributedtothispartofyourcourseis

outlinedinthecourseoverview.Inadditiontothisformal(graded)participation,youcanalsocontributeapresenceinyourcoursebypayingattentiontothefollowingpoints:

ProgramPolicies

ThepoliciesinthissectionapplytoparticipantsenrolledintheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysis

program.

ChangestotheCurriculumThecoursesthatcomprisetheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysiswillchangeovertimetoreflectthe

needsofparticipants,developmentsinthefieldofbusinessanalysisandprogrammanagement,and

theavailabilityandbestuseofUBCresources.Thereisthereforenoguaranteethattheabovelistedcourseswillbeavailableoverthelifeoftheprogram.Asthecurriculumchanges,thetotalcostofthe

programmayalsochangetoreflecttheactualcostsofprogramdelivery.

ToreceivetheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysis,participantsmustcompletetherequiredcurriculumandthenumberofinstructionalhoursineffectatthedateofadmissiontotheprogram.Themost


currentinformationonprogramrequirementswillbepostedtotheprogramwebsite

(continuingstudies.sauder.ubc.ca/study-topic/business-analysis).

Ascertificateprogramsevolve,thefollowingguidelinesapplytominorchanges:

• participantsareexpectedtocompletetheoverallrequirementsthatweremandatoryatthe

dateoftheiracceptanceintotheprogram,asthecurriculumchangesovertime

• participantswhohavecompletedcoursesthataresubsequentlyremovedfromtheprogram

curriculumwillreceivecreditforthosecourses

• participantswillbenotifiedofoptionsforcompletingunderoldornewprogramrequirementsintheeventofamajorprogramchange.

ExtensionsUnderexceptionalcircumstances,extensionsmaybegranted.Toapplyforanextension,completethe

LimitedEnrolmentAlimitednumberofapplicantsareadmittedtotheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysisprogram.Admissionmaybelimitedbytheavailabilityofcoursesandonlinetutors.Meetingminimum

requirementsdoesnotensureadmissiontotheprogram.

AvailabilityofCoursesPleasebeawarethatearlyregistrationisadvisedforallcourses,astheyarealsoavailabletonon-certificate(generalpublic)participants.

PriorLearningAssessmentTheUBCCertificateinBusinessAnalysisisintendedtobeaprofessionaldevelopmentprogramthatbuildsupontheexistingknowledgeandexperienceoflearners.Forexemptionfromrequiredcourses,

requestsforpriorlearningassessment(PLA)willbeevaluatedonanindividualbasis.ToapplyforPLA,

completeandsubmitaPriorLearningAssessmentformonlineatcontinuingstudies.sauder.ubc.ca/student-information/request-forms/prior-learning-assessment.In

caseswherePLAisgranted,participantsareexpectedtocompletetheequivalenthoursthrough

substitutecourses.


AcademicIntegrityUBCSauderContinuingBusinessStudiesiscommittedtoacademicintegrityandtakesacademic

WithdrawingfromaCourse

UBCSauderContinuingBusinessStudiesrequiresnoticeofwithdrawalfromacourseatleastthreebusinessdaysbeforethecoursebegins.Notificationmaybemadeinwritingorbyphoningthe

registrationofficeat604-822-1420.Besuretoincludeyournameandstudentnumber,thecourse


numberandstartdate.Afterreceivingsuchnotification,UBCSauderContinuingBusinessStudieswill

issuearefund.Anadministrationchargeof$50andanynon-refundablechargeswillbedeductedforeachcourse.

WithdrawingfromtheProgram

ParticipantsmaywithdrawfromtheprogramatanytimebutshouldnotifyClientServicesinwritingof

thereasonsforwithdrawal.
